Grundy Lake Bear Cubs - Daytime visit

Description

Grundy Lake Campground Bears

When two bear cubs and their mother walked through the edge of our campsite in the middle of the day, my teenage daughters, my sister and her two kids didn't know whether to grab the camera or run for the truck. When we arrived at Grundy Provincial Park the day before and picked up our permit for White Pine Campground, we were warned that bears had been on our campsite the night before, destroying a cooler and other items in their successful search for unattended food.

My two girls have seen bears from the car while driving, but never up close, so they had a slightly unhealthy fear of them that I was hoping to cure this summer. Bears have been particularly active in Ontario Parks this year due to a poor blueberry crop as a result of a late spring frost, so I was confident that we would see bears, at least at night.

Fortunately for my family, this encounter was very safe, controlled and pleasant, and the two bear cubs were particularly cooperative, walking slowly through the campground where we could view them without risk. We were able to take a short video and get a few photographs before the mother lead her two cubs along the shoreline to the north, hopefully back into the forest where she could teach them natural foraging techniques.
