Table Made of Mud | The Forest Kitchen | Off Grid Log Cabin Build, Ep.9 S1

Description

#table #forest #kitchen

In this episode of the forest kitchen at the off grid log cabin, I build a table made of mud to support the primitive earthen pizza and bread oven. Using cob, a primitive technology mixture of clay, sand and dried grass, I build a table 6 inches thick on top of a pine plank table support that I cut into half round logs with my chainsaw.

so I'm working on the outdoor kitchen right now and what I'm doing is a cop base on this well this is the base that I made but right here I'm making a platform a base that's five or six inches thick of cob which is two-thirds and one-third clay and then to that I'm adding some bark and grass to bind that all together

that's called cob and traditional way of making earthen ovens for thousands of years but also all kinds of structures like you can make huts and stuff like that I'll probably use more of it actually on the next building that I'm gonna build now this is going to be used not as a hobby but as a full-time cooking oven so I need to make sure that I do a fairly good job but also keeping in mind that this is water soluble after I put the roof on that's gonna be the only thing that stops it from eroding from disintegrating but if it failed at some point I could literally break it up and reuse those materials so I'm not too worried about doing it perfectly but I want to do as good a job as possible so I have to redo it of course so that's my non expert explanation of how to do cob and if you're interested in watching me build the rest this outdoor kitchen or go back and watch me build the cabin over the last year and a half or watch me build the upcoming next structures buildings that I need here on the Wilderness homestead then you might want to check out my self-reliance and subscribe to that channel or I show all of that more detail on this channel what I do is talk a lot more about not only what's happening in the world currently but what I'm doing here what I'm doing with my life and what Cali and what Cali is doing - they contribute anyway thanks for watching I'll see you in the next video take care so a better way to mix this would be to get my feet in there in more traditional way take my shoes and socks off get in this even on a turf like the canvas turf that I've been carrying the material in and just stomp on it you keep flipping it over with the tarp by pulling up the edges and keep working it with my feet until it's all mixed in well problem is I have a long way to come with the material so what I'm doing is taking it in and in sections like this or smaller loads and then putting it together and putting it in place because I only have two small canvas tarps so what I have to do is go down to the road to where I had the original parking lot built down there I ended up with a lot of clay sand gravel and rocks and stuff like that so I have to load that into my truck bring that part way down the trail and then from there I'll float it onto the little trailer the little blue trailer then hold that back here so I can only take about this quantity at one time especially in the blue trailer so have one small tarp and the truck have one small tarp in the blue Kurt and then I don't have an extra tarp to put it on the ground - to work it so it'll have to do probably after I get this base built we'll just spend the rest of the day bringing material back here stockpiling it here on the ground and then I have that all at my convenience when I build the earthen oven because I'm going to need to work quicker with that I have to get their whole oven done in two days one day of with the first layer second day of them second layer so I need to make sure the materials are nearby good thing is we got a lot of rain over the last few days and I'm still using water that I collected in buckets and in this trough from underneath the eve of the cabin but also there's a little bit more water in the stream now that I can get access to again so that's gonna be a little bit easier rather than bringing the water up from again from the parking lot where I have a dog well the other thing is I haven't sifted this these little stove in it that could not be good probably on the earthen oven yeah especially on the first layer actually off the sift those though so they don't explode from the heat I want to smooth with clay surface on the inside of that oven on the outside layer probably won't matter as much I can leave a few small rocks in there might add a little bit of decorative effect that's all just my material so it's everything I do here takes takes longer not only because of filming and editing it but also because the materials are not easy to get basically that looks like it just mucked out a horse stall which also would be pretty good building material [Applause]

don't do something it's funny that my wife and I used to bring our kids out into the places like this all the time we'd often do day trips just get in the truck and go for a long drive and this explore much of a natural Ontario Canada as possible but now that we have Cali not as a replacement of the kids but uh just another companion that gets us out doing things that maybe we might not do so instead of staying around the cabin and and working then a look at Callie and she gets a little bit bored or warm around there so we decided to go for a walk or go for a swim like this or a road trip and get out and do some exploring and of course it's great for us and it gets me to step aside or stop working all the time and doing something enjoyable and the other part of that is that YouTube does the same for me it forces me to to keep working or keep doing something interesting with my life because I want to share that with you guys

so rather than considering at a job I consider it a motivational tool to help me to motivate me to just continue to do something interesting and continue to explore life and get the most out of it so when a day goes by that I haven't done something interesting or been productive or captured something interesting for you I actually feel like I need to get up off the off the porch and and get out and do something and film it it put something together for you guys to watch it's not because I absolutely feel obligated to it's because I've really really enjoy sharing this kind of stuff with you and sharing these times with my wife and my kids and my

my parents and my dog and in just getting the most out of life so I'm glad to be able to share this with you that I don't take it for granted one bit I know I I'm very fortunate it would be in a position and live in a place where I have these opportunities to do this so I don't want to squander that and I really really appreciate that you guys pull it along that you want to watch me doing these kinds of things so I thank you for that
