Description

I was not sure exactly how the hardwood floor in the kitchen was going to turn out and how long it was going to take to get it level using sand or clay. I found out.

on this way [Applause]

this

remember last year when I was working September October

yeah probably September in October every time I would hammer in a spike or something in the cabin when I was building the cabin I think it was that what maybe the top of the walls at this point no roof but every time I would hit something with a hammer the frogs would start up so same thing [Music]

let's go for a swim okay we'll go for a swim as soon as I'm done this will go up for a swim in the lake all right [Applause]

so this mallet that I made back in the winter has completely fallen apart it's split and it's only held together by a couple of fibers split into three pieces was going to stop make a new one when it started splitting but I realize it's actually really helpful because it's separated like that what happens is when I hit the pieces come back together and it deadens the blow so let's look at deadblow hammer a hammer that has a weight in it so that when you hit something the weight transfers inside and the hammer stops dead this is why it's called a dead blow hammer and absorbs the well that counterweight ends up absorbing the vibrations as well so that's helpful but the main purpose is to transfer all that blow to the item that you're hitting so in this case it works perfectly to set these cordwood ends so that wood blocks into the sand well that's it floor is pretty well done might do a couple extra pieces going out to the sides of the oven there but I'll wait to see how the rest of it settles and how it what adjustments I have to make and how the dry sand is whether that stays in there once it dries out but I'm pretty happy with it I think it's going to look pretty good and it's actually really comfortable to walk on it's it's level and a little bit of cushion to it so it's comfortable so yeah I'm happy with it so we'll check back in a couple of days when it's all dry it and see what it what it looks like that so we'll see how much the sand actually stays in there once it dries - and whether or not I need to pull some of it out and put clay or something or just mixed some clay with the sand so it holds it in better that's what I originally planned on doing but I thought I'd like to just put it into the bed of sand and then fill it in with the sand that already had there and see how that works first because it'll drain better so I know this is going to rot eventually you're fairly quickly probably in a couple years let's start to deteriorate know how to replace piece at a time or do something different at that time but I just really wanted to try something different something unique I've always liked the look of that whether it's in a garden or on a floor inside a building so I thought this is a good place to give it a try before I do put it in a building so I do think I might do that like inside the sauna change room or something like that or in the guest room guest house this was pretty much most of the day we're just working on this and it's so hot and humid that I think we're just gonna go for a swim this evening and wait for cooler weather before I get back to work out here so thanks for watching this video don't forget to tune in on Friday for the regular log cabin series or randomly throughout the week for food videos and other stuff but I'm gonna keep uploading 2 or 3 videos a week so you have to just keep checking in take care have a great week and I'll see you up with the cabin next time
