My Solo Winter Camping Gear

Description

My Solo Winter Camping Gear.

http://myselfreliance.com/my-solo-winter-camping-gear/

I purchased a few new pieces of gear for winter camping recently and this past weekend was my first time trying it out. I spent one night solo camping and two days snowshoeing in Muskoka, Ontario.

My next trip is this Thursday when I'll spend one or two nights in Algonquin Provincial Park testing my sleeping bag out in harsher conditions.

Check out the blog for the complete gear list.

so here we have my entire basic winter camping kit it's actually quite compact when it's all put together believe it or not and I'll do that too and show it but I've got actually just bought this new like that instead of pulling up pull or a sled behind it's a Osprey bolt 75 leaders pack the frame and place for my water bladder so I do have a water bladder with an insulated hose because it's at your back it does Steve usually thawed I've had it freeze on me when it's like -20 usually not the bag just the hose itself so anyway start with a warmer if you flip the silver side up so reflection bottoms advance coke or research advance advance baby bag bivouac and it's I use that all year round summer included it does have holes that you can put in it that keeps that up out of your face if you're claustrophobic and it also has bug screen which I put on there's a fine mesh to keep black flies o2 so you do use that in inside I've got a Mac -30 can't remember the name of it I think it's Thor any weights of minus-30 sleeping bag very high loft you can see how lofted it is even in the bivi bag I'm really impressed with it it's my first night in it and it wasn't a good test it was only minus one but I was so hot I slept with my upper body fully outside of the sleeping bag in the bivvy and inside that that's part of the reason - this is a sea2summit sleeping bag liner that's not silk and it's just like cotton but it is comfortable it keeps the bag clean and it's another probably 5 degrees Celsius of warmth hi in my I always carried what I call a ditch bag which is my spare clothing but when I put my spare clothing back together I consider it you know a ditch bag emergency bag so if I've got my the rest of my clothes wet if I fell in the lake or something I'm thinking okay what's a full outfit that I could put on and kit in my sleeping bag or something to get warm so this is a powernow an eight hundred full down coat from Eddie Bauer very warm very compact actually you can squeeze out even more which I do once it gets into the bag and that you also use as a pillow also in the ditch bag I've got a buff this is a wool one it's a Dickey another name that can be used as a hat neck warm rubella Club of anything keep my head warm got icebreaker merino wool 200 weight shirt got icebreaker merino wool 200 weight Bogdan and I love these he's darn tough wool hiking socks so they're they're warm actually not pile off but they're warm enough so that all goes into this small blue bag and when I compress that it's quite small actually that goes into the bottom of my of my knapsack and also in the bottom bottom the Knox knapsack and have this tarp if I had been staying over another night that he's going for rain today I would have set that up and made a shelter not about just using some poles or whatever or just you know that's 50 feet of parachute cord typically can set the tarp up just with that but for winter more robust shelter I could also make a lean-to and cover the tarp put the tarp over this heavy bag and that fits nicely into the bottom of the knapsack as well so very compact the easy light goes I just fold that up and I attach it to the back of the pack on the outside of the water bladder goes inside the slots in the back in the backpack up against my back to keep all these miscellaneous items pull into this ultralight Osprey packs I sure hope anyway it's small I use it for simples typically but it's perfect for keeping all that miscellaneous gear together now this is my emergency fire starter kit something else has been there as well but that's that goes in my pocket so it's all me at all times if I lost my gear for something and also my belt I have a striker

holy in the Osprey path got first aid kit often curious so I think bigger one but this is not a big trip that's um tonight's just tape repair tape which is it says it actually is better than better than duct tape I'll carry this this is I've always carried this it's actually good for emergency snare wire and I actually have snared rabbits with it and and eaten them of course but this is also handy to repair something like preparing a canoe or put part of your pack or something it's better than compass of course it's around my neck at all times this goes in one of the side pouches so it's handy at all times glasses again invaluable will never go into the woods err on the lake without glasses how silky pocket boy really impressed with this that's my ass off for sawing a firewood and that's ice is a breeze with it and you can go up to probably 6 inch log and effectively saw through

but kid solid blade I like it and then I just use my knife to split the wood even further to make fire feather stick and then they have got just a simple cheap diamond at knife sharpener for my for my belt knife like Kelly Kettle what the Hobo stove now so I can also cook with the pots more effectively on the stove itself

prefer the stainless mode because I can cook in it as well but it does get cold and it and beverages and food cool quickly because it transfers heat to easily to conductive for the plaster now G beside my own for research or outdoor research Nalgene sleeve insulated sleeve good today I have this snow shovel which packs up that's it all my gear I weighed it before I love thirty-six and a half pounds including nine pounds of water so just over 25 pounds of gear I could have gotten away with doing carrying about a liter of water at a time and just continue to fulfill it off but it you know it's not that much weight so I figured I might as well carry at this time

okay so there's an entire kit and everything that is the entire sleeping kit so sleeping bag yes sleeping pad and that there -30 sleeping bag and liner all in there it's my ditch kit so that was all the warm clothing

camp booties which aren't really necessary got a small 8 by 12 turf sill turf so far my insulated water bottle that's it shovel I'll show you how it folds up

the top of pack is another pair of warmer go up some my spot which for my wife's comfort carry
