Small Town Life: Learn to Fish, Hunt and Bushcraft, Shawn James Childhood

Description

#shawnjames #childhood #family

See where I grew up - I was born and raised in a small town where I learned to fish, hunt, bushcraft, build shelters, trap, live off the land. This was my inspiration to live the log cabin life I'm living now - it all started by growing up within walking distance of a marsh, a river and a forest where I could learn about nature and interact with wildlife - animals, fish, birds, amphibians - I loved every minute of it!

I loved growing up and living in a small town and it was this small town life that inspired me to move north to a tiny village when I was time for me to raise a family of my own.

- Hi everybody, Shawn James here from My Self Reliance. Thanks for watching.

I've been wanting to show you this place for a while. This is what we called the Locks growing up. These concrete walls that you see here are actually foundations of a canal, or the walls of a canal that ran through here. But this is where I grew up. I literally learned how to hunt, fish, and identify wildlife, build shelters, start fires. Everything I learned about the outdoors I pretty much learned it here and in the surrounding forests around here. My parents' house is about a mile from here. They still live there. So this was my hangout; this was my playground. As soon as I got home from school, me and some buddies or my sisters would come down here. We'd fish for carp and chub in these waters. You can see some chub, a whole school of them right here in the shallow water. That was much deeper back then. We always envisioned it being very deep, but I can see now that it never was very deep. It was just muddy water that was maybe four or five, six feet deep, but full of carp and creek chub and stuff like that suckers. So this was the best fishing spot, of course, right here, below the dam where the spill way is, and it's a nice round edge to that concrete. It still looks the same as it did back then, and the older kids would actually get in here on the top part where there's quite a current, and slide over that into the deep water, and with that undercurrent, that undertow, really really dangerous, so I would never recommend anybody do that now. I don't remember me doing it back then even, but things kids do. This is basically a city now. It's completely developed all around here, but there's still lots of wildlife. There's lots of flora and fauna to investigate and learns about nature: frogs, turtles, snakes, everything. You saw that snake video. Cali learning about snakes up at the cabin the other day. Well, this is where I grew up handling snakes all the time. The only species that I ever saw as a kid around here were garter snakes like the one in that video as well as little red-bellied snakes, but I would catch those, take them home, put them in a terrarium, an aquarium in my parents' basement, and feed them there. We had sling shots and bows & arrows. We would shoot the ducks on the water here, and then we'd just cook them over a fire right on the shore line. I learned how to canoe through here. I made makeshift rafts out of anything I could find that would float, and we would float down through the river. The forest over here had deer in it, grouse, rabbits, squirrels, you name it. You know, it goes to show you no matter where you grow up if you have access to little river bottoms and ravines and stuff like that, they exist almost everywhere, and it's enough to learn an awful lot about wildlife and, in my case, hunting and fishing, but also bushcraft and just connecting with nature and, you know, the little plants that are in this area, especially in a river area like this, and a river shed, or in a ravine. There's a lot of diversity typically, and you can hear all the birds that breed in here. So remember that video back in the winter where I was skating, and we had the drone footage of me skating on that flooded area? I said it's very similar to where I grew up. Well this little creek right behind me used to open up into a swamp, and that's where we used to skate through all the swampy grasses and everything, but they straightened it out, and then created these park soccer pitches and baseball fields and stuff. So it's not quite what it was back then, but at least the river, the creek, and they preserved a couple of ponds that we used to catch turtles in over there too, so I'm glad to see all that stuff still here at least. I really appreciate you following along to see how I grew up and what led me to where I am today, so thanks for watching this video. I look forward to seeing you up in the cabin next time. Take care.
