Making Chokecherry Bannock and Doughboys

Description

A last minute camping trip, some berries found on the way sparked an idea. Instead of plain old Ash Cakes as my grandfather would call them which are biscuits cooked in ashes and coals, I decided to add this fresh fruit to the dough, resulting in a wonderful treat. call Terry peacock here with bullet of salvation I'm doing a little cat for tonight and on the way up here into the to the top of this area the mountains I found some trees just loaded up with chokecherries I'm sure you can't probably see those very well but but there they are kind of like kind of like a wild cherry they have a little bit of a stringent taste to them but they're very good nice and these are very nice and sweet just fall enough practically ready they're starting to fall off the tree or so right i picked several bags use them using the scavenger bag I just dropped gallon bags and then fill them up and just kept going picked as many as I wanted what I'm going to do here tonight is hopefully we got enough light to do that as I've got some of my my bug-out bag and my one of my food bags here I got some self rising flour I'm going to mix up some like a an ash cake or something like that and but I'm going to mix in some some choke cherries in it so it kind of make a choked eerie biscuit so we'll we'll see how that all goes here so bear with me here we go and how probably i'll make up about a cup of it I guess look well spilled a little bit you know affect my mom always said I was messy he so there's about it there's about a cup of it try to pit these berries or or small these particular ones so I'm going to do is just squirt the seat up and drop the squirt the pit out and drop the flesh the fruit I guess I can just drop the right there into the flour alright so I got a pretty good covering the berries in there so now what we do is just going to add a little and add water just kind of a little bit at a time and just start kind of stirring it around let me just kind of start mostly stirring towards the middle we just want to keep going until until it pulls everything off the side if you want a pretty thick you want a pretty thick dough that's pretty close i need just a just a tad more another's when you're adding it towards the end here it doesn't take it doesn't take much so you want this thing to be a one this thing to be a cake here have a pretty good consistency and you can see to see all those berries down there the basically a basically kind of like a wild cherry that's what they used to put in cough syrups and stuff i think when i was a kid to try to make them palatable of course back then I had codeine and I'm so they're really good so we'll just keep working on this till we get it right then we'll bring you to the next step here all right there we are now you see that still kind of sticky but it pulls away I can work with it it's right there it's about right I think I've got enough here I'm going to make a cake and then I think I'll roll some out in a roll and do put a wrap on a stick and do a whatever you call it twisty stick dough roll I can even make up my own words too so so see that's not bad right there we can work with that it'll be that'll be really nice right they're not perfect okay we'll let that sit for a minute while our fire and our kohls get ready and then we'll be good to go here all right now got me a little stick I'm gonna wrap the dough on I just use my little Berber pack acts to just kind of shave it a little bit get that bark off and a little bit of the surface wood and i'll be i'll wrap that dough around there hope I can film the last of this with it being dark I'll just go ahead and warn your head that it might be a little rough let me get down to it alright I temporarily pulled my main would back into a parallel log fire for a minute while I pull some coals out of here with my stick and it pulled me in ice why you're out here always added some hot Bank holes hmm not made very many of them really brush the rest back up into their a little bed right there it's where I do is go on all right so here's our water dough here I'm going to break it and about in half save half for my half of my stick now what I'm going to do here just kind of run it out here so it's padded out so it's about Oh half an inch to three quarters of an inch thick

all right now I'm gonna just as gently as i can i'm gonna get so darn hot I'm just gonna plop it on those coal right there all right I'm afraid that's probably gonna be a little grainy cuz getting dark but what I'm gonna do here it's like when you're a kid in school just gonna work on rolling this thing out get us a little link like that and I know my batteries on my camera wanna die to let me just oh dang it trying to try to hurry a little too much because it's getting dark here will let this thing we're just spiraling that as you can see and then we get down to the you get down at the very end you just to kind of wet your finger in the flour just kind of blend that all together blend the front together and now I dude there's going to be ready to roast on the fire right there just just like that what I did is temporarily I just put my stick propped it through the fork in the suspension upright and I found they found a packet of apple cider mix cinnamon cinnamon sugar apple flavoring and I'm going to use that to cover this stuff for a little sweetness since Ted of cinnamon sugar eggs I don't have any so all right you nice a nice that is nice and golden brown I've got a little cup down here with some water you know I don't have butter with me so this was kind of a last-minute decision to come camping sir so I want to do is just kind of wet it like that

get all the surface wet here and I don't really want to soak it I just kind of want to get it damp and then I'm going to sprinkle the cinnamon sugar or the Apple drink mix on there okay so there's that Apple drink mix just sprinkle a little bit on here as they kind of rotate it so that will give me some cinnamon sugar and a little bit apple flavor to what the heck who cares so we combine all that together right now some really good here all right so now I'm going to put that back on my stick and let that sugar kind of caramelize for just a minute well I check my well I check my Banach in the fire there okay reaching down the fire here there's my ash cake or or Bannock as they call it and got burned a little bit around the edge here where it was closest to the fire and it was just a ton of extra heat see the basically the ash in the fire kind of just brushes off of here you notice even though eyes right on those very hot coals and ever this stuff never even burned now I can open it up inside okay so you see right in here there's some several pieces of the of the chokecherry in there break me out the piece of that it's pretty good that adds a little hides a little extra flavor to it think of eyes doing it again I'd even add some more and I that I would I would have added more but we're kind of running out of daylight and I was worried about getting all this stuff dead in time so but pretty good if as a because I chokecherry all throughout that dough going to peel off a little bit of it so this and we have the apple cider mix oh man that is good how does really get there thought that apple cider mix on the outside so it sweetens it up and then we got the choke Terry's inside now let me tell you what that is all right there at some good evening Oh ma'am there's like having cake got a very very good that apple cider mcswiggans this up just enough that with the choke cherries and all that is just it's like a dessert it's like a cupcake very very good that is excellent so there you have it perry peacock with wilderness innovation doing some bands Bannock and some and then decide whatever you call it don't wanna stick with flavored with chokecherries and then sugared up with the apple cider mix so i try some fun stuff while you're out out have a good time have a good time with the simple things you
