wilderness innovation real survival kits survival shelter simplifying survival and wilderness innovation calm hey guys been here for wilderness innovation I've got a tip for you today in recent videos Perry has discussed our fire starter kit if you have not seen it it looks something like this and one of the items that comes in the fire starter kit of course is our dome manufacturing magnesium bar attached by a stretch cord to the striker so you'll never lose your strikers you always have these two together ready to go ready to build a fire in any situation any weather you know at any time some of the videos that perry has done recently involved creating a fire with your known magnesium bar scraping the shavings striking sparks into those shavings and getting a burning he shows you how hot the flame gets from the dome magnesium you've shown you other companies magnesium borrowers some don't burn very hot some don't burn at all some fraudulent magnesium bars from China they're absolutely worthless that will not save your neck in any type of situation it's just a waste of money in a paperweight he's also discussed some some things that you can burn me with the Don magnesium one of his more recent videos he's shown you where he cuts a chunk of rubber off of a spare tire t found on the ground as well as a tube from a bicycle tire and shows you how easy those shavings get that rubber going what I want to talk to you about today is an alternative method for tinder for your very fine tender to get a fire going as opposed to using the shavings from your magnesium bar for instance if you have your TP set up for your fire ready to go and with your little bit bigger tinder and you don't want to scrape off the magnesium savings and put in the concentrator paper and try to get underneath your teepee this is just an alternative method to getting your fire going it's best that you have decent conditions with this method obviously the dell magnesium will wipe every time without fail in any weather condition in any wins the stuff is just amazing but if you've got pretty decent weather conditions and you want an alternative method to starting your fire I've got a couple household items here I'll show you how to use them in conjunction with each other to get your fire going so the first item that we have are just regular cotton balls you can get these at walmart for 99 cents you probably already have in your home but if not they're really cheap to get your hands on also I've got in a tube here so when I percent pure petroleum jelly now this is an off-brand a western family brand but don't get hung up on brands they all work just the same if you have in the tub that works too this is just a little cleaner to have it the tube like this and it's a little more compact as opposed to the big tub so let's go ahead and see how to start a fire with these two items alright guys so what I'm going to do now is go ahead and take a cotton ball from a little bag here and i'm going to get my tube of petroleum jelly and squirt a little bit of this stuff over top of the cotton ball you don't need too much just enough to coat the outside of the cotton ball then just take your fingers and rub around just make sure you get kind of a uniform coat around the cotton ball there's no rhyme or reason to this no art just coat the cotton ball go ahead and see if you can get that off your finger now wipe off your finger so you don't have any excess on your fingers when you're trying to stripe this thing now going out your magnesium bar my preferred method to striking sparks with this thing it is not so much to strike down onto the striker rod with striker but instead hold the striker firmly on the striker rod and drive a striker broad back towards yourself like so produces quite a few sparks so let's go ahead and light this thing and see what kind of results we get so as you can see lit up really easily and you're getting quite a decent flame that should be enough of a flame to light any other tinder that you have with relative ease as you can tell it doesn't burn near as hot as the magnesium shavings from the dome bar but you get a decent flame and you're going to decent amount of heat I bet this would start just about any tender that you have and you get it quiet put a long burn time with this average time you probably get around 45 seconds to a minute with a decent flame like that and all this with a simple household items cotton balls and petroleum jelly really easy to have really easy to get if you don't have it and it's really compact you can put the cotton balls in a bag like this kind of squish the air out the cotton balls will flatten out a little bit and then you can tuck it in your fire starter kit like so without adding any bulk to it and have those cotton balls in that bag pre-moistened with the petroleum jelly and you'll have them good to go whenever you need them also most first aid kits will have those cotton balls in them I know our first aid kit that we're working on right now will have both the petroleum jelly and the cotton balls in it anyways that's your quick tip thanks for watching guys we appreciate you rate comment on our videos if you will check out our website wilderness innovation comm check out the fire

your kids a great tool to have on your person for an everyday carry type of situation so that any time that you need to you can have a fire good to go all right guys have yourself a good day
