Make a Punk Wood Fire Starting Kit

Description

We make all kinds of shelter items like ponchos, tarps, blankets, etc and fire making goes right along with shelter as it helps a person to maintain his life. This video takes advantage of the great qualities of punk (partly rotted) wood, and shows how to create a simple little kit. This kit makes a chunk of punk wood reusable. Punk wood can be blown into a huge ember with tremendous heat, which can aid in starting fire in tough conditions. Check out all our gear at http://wildernessinnovation.com

hey Perry peacock with wilderness innovation I'm excited to show you a little something today in the world of fire-starting and the world the fire-starting is enormous because there's gazillions of ways to start a fire all kinds of things that people have come up with over the years and sometimes the fun just to tinker around with stuff so I'm going to show you today I'm using a punk wood fire starter some years ago we did a couple of videos showing using punk wood for fire starting and using sparks too to start the punk wood glowing and then and then and then create a fire from there [Music]

take this camping with me today when I go camping and and then I'll show you how this thing works it's really kind of fun well it's morning late morning Eck well say 2 o'clock I'm going to do the fire starting with the punc would my little Altoids tin punk wood fire starting set up and I've got some bark that I found that's been pretty rainy up here so this bark I couldn't find any bark early that was not a little bit damp so that's kind of where this Altoids tin thing comes in with this Punk wood and with that in intense heat I can get this stuff started where it'd be pretty difficult to do just throwing sparks from a from a Ferro rod or something like that into there so here's a here's a piece of punk wood right here and you kind of hear I mean it's just it's almost exactly like balsa wood it's and it's just basically it's just pure cellulose that's just kind of left from the rotting process but if you want to put it in a tin like this just to make a little kit sort of thing why why then we want to cut this down to size all right so I've set the I've set the fence on the bandsaw to be the width of my Altoid tin here so this right here you see that's about that's the width of that and that drops we can make these things fit pretty tight in here if you want but I find it's not worth the hassle to do that

okay so now I'm just going to adjust this for the thickness [Music]

alright so now I'm going to set the saw with to get this thing for the length now we'll slice these things up [Music]

this will catch a spark just like it is but by charring it first just like char cloth it makes it catch the sparks much much better what I'm gonna do is take a lighter last time on I made a whole bunch of them I used it just a little propane torch to do the same thing but I can I can do this with a lighter just as well

just takes a little longer and since I'm just doing one right here and you see it's already we're already getting some glowing stuff happening here in fact it's starting to burn a little bit in fact that could probably hold this thing for this thing would probably hold a a spark or an ember for an hour so inside that tin box if I didn't close the lid quite all the way but anyway basically basically that's what we want to do this thing is now prepared to be a fire starter I just closed the lid let that sit for about five minutes or so and it'll all be out and it'll be ready for me to throw a spark so now that I've now that I've got my little tin done with some punk wood in here cut and scorched charred I guess you could say I'm now ready to go out camping all right so I'll just open the lid and I actually did a fire last night saying CI I didn't need to spark nearly as much as I did I mean although when it's a little darker you can see [Music]

the nice thing nice thing about that is you know what the flame you gotta act right now you got to do it right now be on it but with this I'm gonna actually go I did this in the shade so you could they could see a little better what's going on now I'm going to go over to my little fire setup over here and we'll go ahead and get this thing going nice thing about this is the wind is an advantage it helps keep things going and this tin will keep everything contained and now so I got to do is lay this stuff onto there

keep in mind see I'm I'm kind of drying out the dampness here so takes a little longer than normal but there we go no I closed the lid on my out Lloyds 10 now you can see they closed the lid on the outside skin so now that's going to be ready for the next time I need a fire and and this stuff here we'll get going get this fire going and even though it's kind of a sloppy fire I just threw some stuff down literally but it'll it'll get it all going here and we'll have us a little fire that tends a little hot right now but a few minutes that will cool off nicely and I've gotten you know I can start several several more fires at least with that thing can see that whole pile in there smoking which is which is obviously an indication that the heat from what I've put in here is starting to burn off the moisture that's in that wood and and pretty soon well it's starting to catch her now so the cam around this little so that is God is gonna catch into the fire right shortly and a live so my out towards 10 is now cool enough to handle well a little bit of hash browns and bacon this is just this is just from an MRE Nothing gourmet here that does have peppers and stuff like that in there you had some water going for Samoa this morning that's just right no see how this MRE tastes last night at MRE it was uh some kind of chicken something new his axe it was pretty good this isn't bad here either I think I'll see if I can catch a little in my hat here should be I'll at least get a cup or so oh yeah [Music]

[Applause]
