Overlanding Peacock Style - Exploring the Utah Desert

Description

Driving out into remote regions that have no facilities or means of support is part of Overlanding and in this case hiking the rim of the Upper Black Box Canyon of the San Rafael River is part of the adventure. I slept on the ground with our new product, "The Beast" to sleep on, our Osni Cloak laid out for a blanket, and our poncho equipped with tent poles as a canopy. For simplicity the tailgate of the truck provided a surface for cooking and food prep. Beautiful scenery among the Red Rocks and barren desert of the San Rafael Swell of Central Utah. well hello world yeah we are that said coming up yeah light temperature about 20 degrees out here courting like thermometer I got in here 10:00 10:30 last night just driving down the road pulled off and found a spot in the middle of the cactus here and throw it down I didn't even know that mountain was back there it's a surprise in the morning he liked it you have no idea what you're waking up to well this is over land and peacocks now right here man throw down on the side of the road not a tree in sight over here no vehicle here half a million miles on it beat the crap and I'm still driving now there were there ain't nobody ain't no civil service there ain't nothing I got my junk right here in my truck throw down on the ground over there to sleep that's over landing man is what specialist here and I'm driving out through here all over creation in a day's time I might see another person or two out here that's what I love about it man I got no cell service I got no body out here there's some cattle grazing down the road here about a half mile that I can see there they can hear baler in and stuff like that I got nothing out here man something happens to me out here it's me and out here ain't nobody coming to rescue me

there's water up here I got to have me something hot to drink man that's that simplicity right there man the Sun just peak it up right there right there we'd be loving it right here man

so I thought here's about being out here it ain't about what you got man no amount of money in the world brings you this it's just about flat-out getting out and doing it I got to make me some mocha have me something hot to drink and I got a thing of hot chocolate right down in here I carry my I carry my spoon and fork set right here in my pocket on my pants I got a cup I used last night I camp out here with my grandpa there's a kid we didn't worry about nothing man nothing all right I need some this is pero made out of toasted barley and ground up like powder and it ain't no coffee replacement it just makes the chocolate taste less sweet that's all the instructions on the perros a hot water not boiling but I ain't too much a one to follow instructions I found if I pour this stream of water high enough get mixes all that stuff up without even having to use a spoon there we go yeah it's hot well the bath burns my tongue off for crying out loud what am i doing you just got a sip it a little it'll burn every taste button you're on your tongue off man I love it out here I can't I cannot get enough of it man I could be up in the mountains near my house and the pine trees and all that jug and I'm out here they ain't even a tree out here man look you see anyway there's a couple a couple juniper that way out there this is living oh that feels good chilly went for a chilly little walk this morning out toward the San Rafael pretty dang nice that's how I roll right here man you don't like how I roll but plenty other people to walk watch on the dang YouTube but that's how I do it I don't care if anybody else even likes it I just do what I like man that's good I'm hot going down feel so dead I'm good it's awesome man awesome

now this is my life right here plain and simple nothing fancy you know that right there that's my big-screen TV right there I tell you what at home I got a 24 inch flat-screen TV I ain't lying about it that's it my computer screens bigger or not I don't need it man I don't need it because I come out here and I got my big-screen right there right there and live in color I'm into this mood man Overland and peacock style so me and my grandpa used to do it when I was a kid man out here in this very country and it ain't changed it ain't changed since I was a kid it ain't change for 50 years it still looks the same I tell you what you're getting a load of me today cuz I don't know for some reason this morning I am on a I'm on a roll

this is one thing I can depend on coming out here it's gonna be the same I like it so anyway yeah I'm really on a roll today I'm telling it how it is ain't sugarcoat nothing I'm not in a bad mood right to the contrary I'm in a great mood I just love that I came out here in the dark last night 10:30 I rolled it I just I was looking for a place I could even pull off the road as to rocky everywhere but right here and I pulled off I had no idea what the scenery was gonna be when I woke up when I got up and saw this that was happy as I could be man never showed this before this something I've been working on for a little bit and I'm really happy with it

I'm gonna tell you what I had one of the best night's sleep that I have ever had last night right out here and I'm you know I'm just throw down right out here there's rocks in the ground and junk like that

luckily I missed all the cactus patches but right here this is how I slept this right here is a poncho one of the Poncho's we make I put some tent tubes inside of there and an X popped it up like a little canopy right there man and right here is my sleep and setup now I don't normally ever use a ground cloth that's another poncho I don't normally use that even but I wanted to keep my new piece here a little bit clean looking for just a moment I'll show you some more of this God so dadgum Rocky it's tearing up my knees kneeling on it there's sharp rocks down in there alright so this right here that's my Oh sneak cloak right there you might be getting some Sun in the lens here am I have to move that just a little bit all right there we go this is my ocean II cloak I'm wearing a wintertime up in the snow or whatever in the fall that was my blanket right there I see it right there this right here is my pad that I'm laying on this dang thing right here now this ain't no they say no half ounce super duper ultralight sleeping pad right here this this deal right here in fact I haven't give it a name but I got a name just come to my mind I'm thinking about colored but calling it the Beast staying right here weighs just a shade over three pounds and ain't no half ounce like I say man Oh super duper ultra light right here if you get a pic they're gonna roll this thing up and pick it up and carry you better go to the gym and work out a little bit when you carry this thing you know you got something in your hands man but I'm gonna tell you what I slept like a baby I slept so good incredible this thing right here has on it all the way around double-sided snaps but I snapped my poncho on the backside to these snaps it's all up and down the side of here they match the snaps in your poncho so the Beast right here see right here the Beast is snapped right to my poncho then up inside here there's my there's my sleeping right there there's a lot of things that'll do right there I'll be showing you but some other videos the bug net that goes with it all kind of other things you can do with this dude right here so you know you can fly in the sky like we've been doing for a long time in the hammocks which are great I absolutely love that the down here they know trees man there ain't no trees the only thing you can do is throw it down on the ground man and that's what this deal right here is made to do throw it down on the ground and enjoy it

have yourself asleep you lay down when I went to sleep I never woke up till morning man I I slept like a log well my other camp box had this stove in it so I believe I'm going to use it cook me some bacon and eggs I think for breakfast let me get my fry pan out this is our this is our fry pan stove bags right here Cordura nylon top-of-the-line stuff right here no muss no fuss closure right there that over here I'll dump my drink back into later it's like a lot of the stuff settled in the bottom here there we go all right fire that up my crude over landing setup right here I don't mess around too much there we go all right turn the gas on there we go we got gas get some eggs right here I got some bacon out here it's already in good shape it's added my refrigerator out here in the back of my truck the refrigerator is called wintertime in the desert I don't need no ice and aw nothing like that for the other burner here we've got two burner power right here going on that's more bacon than I need but but on my cousin Dwight said ain't no way you can have too much bacon I told you'd get sizzling after a little while here it's hard to go to wrong with bacon rectify you had for breakfast was baking it Papa Jesus fine put a little of that over there stir my drink with my fork that's been in the bacon that should do nothing but make that taste better ah morning on the desert they don't get too much better than this burn your throat all the way down to your stomach

that's way it ought to be when I was a kid my mama would have tried to slap my hand for snatching the bacon for everybody else's eatin breakfast well your van is being a dolt be not on the desert like this there ain't nobody out here to tell you no well I'm just gazing off at the just gaze enough at the wallpaper in my kitchen here show me a little salt on there for you forget I've had this thing since probably 1970 film canister salt shaker that's old-school ain't no doubt about that crack me a little pepper on here well it ain't much of a breakfast but it'll do me I guess I can be proper and use the spatula here that's good enough for this morning nicely peppered eggs and a little nice bacon well listening to a little Big & Rich out here well I have myself a little indulgence a little tapioca pudding before I head out on a little hike here I'm gonna try to see if I can see me a little bit of some adventurous safe

so

who says you can't have dessert after breakfast

this stuff right here that right there is like instant fire put my lighter into that stuff right there you know need to bring nothing special with you out here that'll do it well I got to come hike clear out around the end of this little split right here in the ground you go out there a few hundred feet and you can't cross it that's one of the things you run into out here on this desert there's a lot of times you have to do a lot of walking around because you come on these cracks out here in the ground that go into deep canyons and junk like that you can't get across them so you got to come out around them and sometimes you got to walk forever just to get a little ways but when you start hiking through here this place is absolutely full of cracks and canyons deep down into the ground look at this look at this there we go here we go here we go now look at that I mean not only did it just drop down into here right there in the middle it goes way way down to the bottom there and there's a little wash weight on the bottom of that crack that whines through there look how all these rocks have eroded around here jagged and that one right there on here see what we got

oh my gosh look at that now I tell you what you can you can just hike along all day long just winding along through here and you just you just don't know what kind of site you're gonna see out here it's astounding and so much of it you can't even get to it's just it's just too too difficult I'm gonna see if I can get down there and get out to that edge right there where I can see right down and then to the river you really have to be careful along through here because so much of this rock as he rode in such a weird fashion a lot of this rock is unstable that you have to kind of walk out through I'm not watching the camera cuz I gotta watch my feet some spectacular scenery out there here it's just so fun to wander along the edge of this thing and around every turn and everything it's like it's a different level view some different spectacular thing that you see you know in all this exploration I do have to keep one thing in mind and back there on that point that kind of oddly eroded rock I've got to keep in my mind where that's at because thus far walking up through here I don't see any other way for me to get back up on top than right there and you know Here I am I'm out here I'm out here solo like I usually always am and I've got to be careful because there's nobody here if I get hurt that can go for help I don't have any cell service I got nothing well I'm having to skirt up around some things here it's so it's hard to take pictures and video here because you got to have your eyes peeled all the time you come across stuff and you think you're just going along and all of a sudden there's no bottom and it comes up just like this it's really hazardous if you're not careful I mean I've talked to some of the old folks and the ranches around here and they say there's more people have to get rescued out of here than you can imagine and maybe an out here solo like I'm pretty much always camping solo but I have got to be extra careful in a situation like this because no one would have any idea where to even look for me I mean I don't know how anybody even find me I find my bones someday I have to be so careful walking around here on this rock this rock is pitted and eroded and has very sharp pinnacles I mean you could some of these you could poke yourself and draw blood for when you're walking on this stuff sometimes it kind of sticks in your shoe just a little bit and it almost makes you stumble and trip I'm maneuvering my way along here I'm not sure how much farther I can go I keep running into areas where there's crevices I just dive back in towards the cliff wall here someplace I got to negotiate some pretty narrow stuff to get through there San Rafael River black black box canyon just some spectacular scenery

look how this rock is here Oded I mean it's it's all eroded back in there even back away from the cliffs going down into the gorge there's still some nice stuff going on back a little ways away from there this I'm telling you I love it just walking through here every every place you go you just have something new to see

it's some beautiful scenery through here and

[Music]

and oh my what have you you

now this is a really fun exploration here my voice is echoing all death through this Canyon as I talk it's kind of bouncing back to me and it's kind of uh confuses me but anyway this is so beautiful so spectacular it's just an amazing amazing place well you see the king is still deep not as deep but it's getting narrower

look how deepens narrow that Canyon is right there yeah looks like somebody could almost jump across not me listen to some oldies while I'm out I can around look how narrow that slide is in that Canyon

hey wouldn't this be a fun little sleight when a thunderstorm comes by and got a flash flood and we just fly right along through here like this and then off we go listen to little Neil Diamond now some oldies but down that Canyon it's not as deep as before I was still narrow and steep that's still less than into oldies out here oh you got view man last time I was out here the river was frozen with ice now West here this is called Brigham T Mormon tea that's echinacea really and there's not much of the chemical in there and this out west stuff it's kind of bitter to chew on but when you're out and your mouth dry it'll do well there's a few nice shelter opportunities here yeah if a person needed I don't came to about I guess maybe three months ago when I first came out here to the upper black box and I came to here and then just a little bit farther down stream than that but now I've done the whole piece between where I'm camped in here so now I gotta get back up to the road now and head back what take me a snooze

after all that hiking around there hadn't been nothing by here that I can tell all day today but one one SUV a couple cows and some wild burros and that is it I am going to take me a nap in the shade that breeze bond feels pretty done good and laying on the Beast right here I'll tell you what it's about as comfortable as anything I don't feel nothing from the grand affecting me or what I am good to go yes this right here this here this here is Overland and peacock style an old beater pickup truck half a million miles on it almost and I just kick it around on a desert when I was growing up you just called it drive it on a desert camping I guess over land and sounds a little sexier there we go freestone peaches right here just like it turn my turn down our um a little so here we go [Music]

so this is my serving of fruit today oh I need my fork to these priests I never had the freestone brand okay good now this this canopy cover is made out of a poncho like I said well it won't go anywhere because it snapped onto the Beast so left to unsnap it in order to show you the Beast that's one of the cool things about it it's an integrated system part of the poncho shelter system alright so see right here the snaps on this is a poncho so I just unsnap the snaps here on the poncho they're just a few of them by six I think three front three back once I do that now that whole thing can come off of there the tabs on the beast are double-sided the snaps so I snap my host knee in on one side snap my poncho in on the other side and you got the Beast right here premium premium foam just right to hold you up off the ground to give you a nice sleep without being too firm and premium-grade this nice heavy-duty mesh cover on it that protects it but yet is very breathable so you're never gonna you never going to feel clammy or anything like that with it this all has also as the other added function of when you roll this thing up it's got grip to it or if you're laying on here with something slick like nylon it's not gonna slide around on you it's got grip to it when you roll it up it's got grip oh so that helps you roll it nice and tight really easily you're not going to fight this thing rolling it up d-rings all the way around because we've got attachments got attachments for this thing bug net other canopy options ground cloth options a bunch of different things so you can rig this thing up however you want to you got to love it man he'll give you the best night's sleep you ever had I mean you know I've pretty been I pretty well been a hammock guy but I still AM when you get out somewhere like this they're not a whole lot of options it's nice to be able to go to the ground and be comfortable well I ran out of memory I ran out of memory on my regular camera I use 32 gigs of memory today man anyway so I'm finishing up with my iPhone here yeah anyway so because of the mesh that's on this foam pad it makes it possible to easily roll this thing up this small even though it's massive it's a beast and that makes it nice now we're also going to offer a Cordura Cordura nylon pack cloth bag for this to slide into for storage and transportation and you'll have your choices of whatever we are up to 23 different colors of Cordura and patterns and stuff anyway I swear man this is one of the it's hurting my knees to kneel right here because it's so rocky but I slept on this pad last night I didn't feel a thing I laid down when I was ready to go to bed I laid down and I I fell asleep to a 6 o'clock this morning when I woke up I mean man it was a nice nice night sleep I loved it so look for the beast it'll be coming we've got a couple little couple little things we're just winding up on it but but we're daughter darn close to making this thing happen for you now take a look right here this is the area that I was sleeping and I just pulled the beat I just pulled the Beast up off there right there those holes in the ground those rocks brushes stickers all that junk that's what I slept on and never even knew it there was a beautiful beautiful night sleep
