Stingray Tarp Set Up for Hammock - Unusual set up - Poncho is Hammock

There are many ways to cover a hammock for protection, the Stingray tarp pitch is an unusual one, but it is very effective, while still offering a wide view around you. The Stingray is easy to pitch with a square tarp. I show it here pitched using our PSTL, a 10' x 10' tarp. This particular one is in Woodland Camo

The hammock I used is an ultralite 1.1 oz silnylon printed in Realtree Xtra camo, it is light, compact and very sturdy. The suspension is Dyneema, that is Dyneema runners, and a Dyneema Shuttle Sling.

I'll show you kind of an unusual setup it's Kyle I call it the Stingray it's kind of because of it kind of reminds me of that kind of look but it's one of my favorites I show you how I do it and just take a look at it see what you think well let's get down here I found on a nice area doing this kind of setup I really want a little bit more space because I'm going to be using my pstl our large tire for my for my set up so I'm going to use that as my that's my poncho Realtree extra poncho so that's going to be my hammock and then I've brought my hammock panic kit for Poncho's here which has my Dyneema accessories to hang this up with it looks like we're gonna have a little wind today so now I've pulled out both ends right here and I just I just connect them like this this like that alright get these shuttle slings put up here

and the distance I am apart I about want to be kind of about my head height or so something like that all right so now very simple to hook this stuff up all I do is put my two runners together two ends I put the eye of the put the eye of the shuttle sling through there and then I put my Marlinspike which in this case the Marlin spike is experimental and you see on the end of my shuttle sling I have epoxied are bonded the short piece of aluminum tent tubing just about two and a half inches long or so and that becomes my love Marlinspike glide the shuttle up and down on the line to wherever I need it I need to let it down I just push it down I need to pull it up I just pull it up and that's it that's how hard it is right there is when you are pushing up on the line to tension it when you get to the point you want it run your fingers right up that shuttle is what that does is that engages the Chinese handcuff type thing makes a bite down on the static line and hold in place for what I'm doing here I've got a this is a woodland pstl are large tarp it's ten feet by ten feet as twenty-seven tie out tab built in coming from us to you so give you plenty of plenty of ways to tie it out if you need to our tarps come with our tarps come with regular sets of cordage shot cord loops tent stakes that are shockcord in the whole nine yards I'm going to then I hang my ridgeline of my tarp I'm about the same height as my poncho here someone have some Headroom I just tie my Swedish hitch whatever I need to add if I need to add a few more feet of line about six more feet or so so I'm going to do a sheet Bend so here's one end I've got a loop in it got a loop in it right here and I'm going to shove the other piece of rope through here and we got to go around it in the direction of that of that end right there come all the way around then I come underneath that piece there so it makes something that looks like that now you can go around twice right here and then come through for just some extra strength or whatever but you don't often need that

alright so to do this I have a this is a Dyneema twine or lash it cord a little tiny thing 500 pound strength I'm gonna use this Dyneema latchet cord as my as a prusik loop everybody says oh the Dyneema is too slippery let me tell you what it's not slippery at all won't go anywhere so I've got my loop I slide it slide it back a little wherever I need it to be I put the end of the loop through the loop on my tarp right here and then I can use anything for a toggle here's just a stick I brought on the ground okay so I just pull that that right there will hold everything in place and on this end keep it from sliding alright there's uh there's a number of ways I could anchor this down I do want to use the shot cord in the tent stake too because that's usually best if it's windy it gives you a little bit of there's a little bit of tensioning and stuff so I see I could come right here if I want to and stake right down there and that right there will be just fine every tarp comes with a set of three shock cord loops three different sizes and they come in handy in a lot of different ways I'm going to use one of these shock cords to do a little something here today for my canopy the tent stake bag that comes with your point with your tarp has a Velcro on the bottom that velcro is used is used for securing a canopy from the underside of your tarp normally wind it normally when you have a tent stake bag you can only use it for the tent stakes we give a use for it when you get to camp check this out so here's what we do this isn't the stake bag that actually goes with this tarp but doesn't really matter I just need one so all I do is I put the stake bag over the end of a pole I cinch up my one of my shock cords that velcro right there will stick to a place in the in the tarp and that'll keep this thing from moving around and I take that velcro there and in the in the tarp and this large tarp is three places diagonal from the center to have velcro patches on them

I stick that to that velcro patch the kid it's not gonna go anywhere even a tent stake bag is multi-purpose tell you what we take it to the limit so I'm going to stick this to the velcro on the inside of the tarp I could even go higher if things were a little more extreme I might pitch it just a little bit lower but really for most time less you really really got some blowing stuff this would be pretty good now I could take I could take this part of it and I could bring it down a little lower which actually brings the sides down and all that so that right there that gives me a bunch more protection now because the because the ends of the tarp come to kind of a point it has the appearance of maybe not being very well protected here but actually I'm almost two feet to the tarp in any direction to the edge so I really have a quite a bit of space and I am

gosh I'm I'm probably 40 inches from the end of my hammock to the tip of the tarp on the point over there and one of my favorite things about it is I can be in here in my hammock and I can see out all over the place and still be protected from the elements but I like to be in the storm but be able to see out and see the storm

oh that's the stingray set up the backfire part down there on the right is the tail the sides are the wings the front is the head that's kind of a stingray setup and that's at least that's what I named it and it sheds the wind very nicely and the weather and all that sort of thing you get really good runoff from rain without puddling and stuff like that it's a very nice setup for the weather so this worked great nice nice little situation here you know I'm I'm well protected for we're pretty for most most all conditions that's that's my thing I hate being out and being like closed up inside it's some little cube or something I like to be able to be out I'm a I like to be I'll see where I'm at so you know Here I am looking south not through there some clouds kind of a storm coming but look at my view from the hammock I've got a lot of Sun over that way so it's a little bright but look at that view right there so it's a nice nice setup works fantastic really really a nice way to do things right here and so you see looking at that angle right there there's no part of the hammock sticking out even even from the lower triangle part of the tarp and you see how far out the the the top edges go out to the tips of those I mean I've got a lot of protection on my tarp on my hammock so here I am easily easily standing inside of here plenty of room to move around you're not having a hunched over or anything like that and it's it's a nice shelter it's a nice very nice little setup easy easy to set up so this is Perry peak aqua wilderness innovation just showing you another way to use one of our tarps in this case the pstl our largest tarp 10 foot by 10 foot set up over my poncho which I'm using as a hammock everything here is multi-purpose even a tent stake bag you saw that even the tent stake bag is is used even up to you take the tent stakes out of it you still unit to hold the pole up to a ceiling of a tarp you
