you

hi everyone and got another book review for you today and today we're going to be reviewing a book that is incredibly useful in bushcraft particularly if you are quite new to it but still even if you're well into your bushcraft has still want to improve your knowledge of your surrounding area and the resources and whatever that are available to you so today and we be looking at the Collins guide to the trees and almost called trees of Britain and Europe okay so it's just some problem that so that's the front cover now this is a wasn't the first tree book I bought and I saw this randomly in a camping shop a camp Salazar how to flip through it really really decent book and nice size I prefer it to be slightly smaller but you know what not a massive issue goes in the side pocket of bag or whatever and or a little pouch that you carry him but it's an absolutely fantastic book okay so so call it Collins guide to trees of Britain in Europe and found within this book according to the blurb on the back and there are over 300 species of trees found in Britain and Europe so it's not specifically just British trees its European trees as well but I think the fundamental kind of main bulk of the chief analyst are British now the thing I really like about this book is the way that it is arranged now the trees in this are arranged by the shape of the leaves the leaf arrangement and the actual sort of design of the leaves which means that if you're trying to identify a true that you've not recognized before when using this book really easy to find that particular tree so it's full color throughout and with lots of information so we've got literally on the first like you know there's the cover there's a first page we've got the silhouette to the different trees which is really useful because if you get to learn your silhouettes you tweeze you can identify them and mark them out from a distance which is a really useful and before we get into actually i'll have a look at the actual tree descriptions and through identification and stuff in a moment so i'm getting bitten here it is all color-coded so we've got conifers with conifers different ones we've got conifers worse Kelly's than the broad leaves and each sex in the book is color-coded that's right on the second page a guide to the color coding in the book but we also have some information on how to use this but right at the beginning so you know how its arranged different species of trees and how to actually the explanation of the notes in the book it contains the Latin names and the common names of the trees and there is also at the end of the book some will let me to find it there is a little section on the biology of trees and you know what this is actually really useful so it explains how to sort of work out the different parts to leaf and the terminology which is used to describe leaf arrangements and things which is really useful that you know actually using this book and different sort of jargon terminology on and descriptions of leaves on the shapes that's the edges there i think edge of the leaves and then just a bunch of other sort of general sort of tree identification biology terminology stuff that really useful you really useful stuff right the back it's got a little section on the different parts of trees i think it's predominantly connor physical some of them some of the box are quite difficult to identify on them well let's have a look at the actual main bulk of the book which is the individual species of trees and how to how to identify them so I'll just flicked it literally open a random page here it shows the common beach really useful tree when we see everywhere and and what I really like about this is it's got a really really detailed this described description of it so it tells you to shape the tree the shape the leaves the types of flowers a description of the bark as well as pictures and further further on the borders on the back of the book it tells you the habitat of it which is really useful because obviously you might find something that looks like a beech tree but if it's until the wrong habits are you can kind of go oh well maybe it's not maybe it something different and carry on with your search and it also gives the names of different types of the same species so we've got other it's a similar species oriental birch and then tells us the page in which we can find that so what I really like about this though is the description is all well and good but obviously the main thing with identifying and all trees and plants is the way that it looks and this beech tree dog does this for a few of them but the beech tree in particular is a really good one it's got three images of the exact same tree in in full leaf in autumn and in winter so i'll just show you that now this is really useful not a lot of books and do this kind of thing so you could be out to an identifying new tree in the winter but will find that mostly books just have a description and the image of that tree in the summer which is you know all well and good believe you're not in the summer there's no leaves on it you're going to struggle and the retail price of this book is set 899 in the UK on the back it looks i got it for three quid and in an english heritage shop not a national trust shop the receipt sticker thing is still on sorry well that got a bit wrong and there's a website you can get these fun which is ww collins car at UK i'll put that link in the description down here and i'll also put the ISBN number in the bottom here it's really available online have a bit shop around might be able to get yourself a decent decent deal on it so it's a really good really really fantastic but this comes pretty much everywhere miss stays in the car and honestly since i've been using this book my knowledge of the trees of britain has just shot through the roof it makes it so much easier and so yeah that's the collins guide to trees of Britain Europe here is what it looks like highly recommend it nice easy use book well-written full color throughout good pictures good descriptions really really useful and one thing that doesn't contain though is I'll see how can find an example really quickly for you and a lot of trees obviously have the dirt so a lot of trees have interesting ways we can use them so for example I picked out the Silver Birch here really interesting way to use a silver birch is in early spring you can eat the leaves and always bring you can tap it for the SAP no information of that kind in this book at all which is understandable it's not that kind of book it's a book on identifying trees it's not a book on wild foods or how to use your particular trees it just shows you how to identify them so you know identify a tree then do a bit of research into how you can use it that way you learn a bit more but yeah highly recommend it the Collins guide to trees of Britain and Europe thank you for watching everyone
