Dakine HeliPro DLX 20L Backpack | Field Review

Description

Krik of Black Owl Outdoors reviews his current, as of April 2013, daypack of choice, the Dakine HeliPro DLX 20L. Designed to be a backcountry go to bag for skiing and snowboarding, Krik explains how it works well for bushcraft, hiking, and an everyday carry bag. While it doesn't provide the volume for camping trips, the Dakine HeliPro DLX 20L is more than ample for a day in the wilderness.

hey what's up Turtles its Creek here with blackout outdoors today I'm going to be doing a review when this pack I'm wearing which is that the kind he'll do pro DLX 20 liter bag a quick shot of it do my posing too kind selling this on their website for I think 105 dollars you can find it cheaper I think the cheapest I found it was around 75 but that's depending on the color option available that you want that's 20 liters and this is bag is sort of specifically designed for you know backcountry you know skiing and snowboarding pretty much and as I talked through the bag you'll see why that why that is the bag is being secured to my body with the sternum strap up here which is adjustable on both sides depending on your body shape put it where it's comfortable start them shops really nice and there's a hip belt here one and a half inch tip belt which I really like I like the size of it learn a lot of packs is size for day packs if you will or glorified book bags the hip belts are a lot smaller these little almost cupped hands it feels like someone's you know don't slow dance with me got their hands other hands right here play X here you hang hang a tool if you want hang anything on the other side there is a small pocket which is nice to put things weak when you're hiking you want to grab something out of here there's my black later as the hip belt and the the left guess it's the left on my left shoulder shoulder strap there is this is where the reservoir tube comes out and is it's insulated this the shoulder strap is insulated which is really nice on hot days or cold days and if you are wearing Camelback Osprey platypus all those companies that make reservoirs or bladders you don't have insulation and you're out of the Sun a lot you can do a nice little trick where it's not going to actually it's not going to shave your tube but you will be able to you take a sip and the waters right up the mouth you can hold this up here open up the bite valve and all the water will run back into the reservoir which yes your tubes going to get hot distract distract exposure but there won't be any water sitting in here getting hot you all keep that keep that covered too but since inside the pack small little pull no trick I learned just by using this by working and hiking a lot take it off get on the ground and go around some features and show you what I have in the bag and it's still the day today we're my first day out after I've been in bed for a week with the bad back so I'm just try to move around pretty gently and talk about the bag and this is basic like I said is for you know backcountry skiing and snowboarding I don't use it for that but I'll talk about that towards the end first getting in here on the back of the bag there is a horizontal or horizontal snowboard carry unbuckle this this flap comes down put your board in here you know in between the bindings pop this back up you're able to wear this put that with their with their snowboard coming out coming out this way that's one way they're all it's also a vertical carry for snowboard which will come in the front right here there's two compression straps which also double as you're able to carry carrying skis on the side here as well the binding you know going Yorick sort of holding it the skis will come like this on there's one on each side obviously for two skis one buckling these being some slack do the other one you can carry your snowboard like this as a vertical carry and I've used this for my skateboard use this while riding my bike carrying a skateboard and it works really great it works well you know it's not intended purpose is not you know for carrying boards or it's very much the same design for carrying a skateboard or a snowboard so it works really well I like that's what I like about it why I know how I use the bag like I said on the other side there's two straps as well to carry skis the manner of um skis running up and down like this and then you know putting these in the correct position where the bindings are - hold it - hold on hold the ski really nice that's one way to one way to carry your skis is also retractable cable carry if um with a cone it for your ski and that in my way of this the first start there's get that do again the small zipper a small pocket here which opens up some wet awesome nylon by giving this some slack up here down here there's this little tab take the water bottle out for this tab right here it says D excellent DK kind I'll pull that out and then this cable comes out and this and then this I had my skis you know my steez back together follows my skis together like this put them through here coming up the bag this way and then on top of the bag in this other small pocket there's a little little bit of nylon with a with a buckle on it and the other part of the bug was hidden in this little flat buckle this as is you can and then I'll try to simulate what it would look like but your ski would base your skis or basically you know be coming from down here which my hand is holding and then coming up this way and then through here really nice really nice really cool feature like I said I don't use this for backcountry skiing or snowboarding but it's really functional with really cool features of this bag on the side here this is meant to carry a shovel these to mr. Johnny's right here I meant to carry a shovel with a buckle down here to help hold the handle really nice that you know I repurpose it use it for you to carry other things tripod all types of stuff it's really nice and on the side here is this hideaway pocket water bottle pocket if you don't want to you know if you're not carrying a bottle here if you're going downhill with this on your bag after you've you know hiked into the backcountry going to streamline your bag go anything sticking out it's nice haughtily hideaway pocket really fan of hot away pockets on bags this is a 40 litre Klean Kanteen fits in there nice place and snug now there's two pockets on the outside of the bag I have one right here which is you know designated as a goggle pocket but now it's fleece lined you know for your goggles not going to scratch your goggles you could put you know anything sensitive in the air if you have GPS that's not covered or camera sunglasses anything like that right now I'm just using as a small pocket I have some snacks in there Farage and sharpies love sharpies can't get enough of sharpies small little pocket up there nice moving on there's this bigger pocket on here which has really big really big zipper zipper tracks on it big zipper pools have a Leatherman in there right now sort of this two-tone color this teal finger paracord a small point and shoot camera

well I'm out there you know I don't like sticking too much in this pocket that's bulky if I'm going to put a lot in the main compartment but what's nice about this bag depending how you want to carry yourself is that this pocket here continues and extends the whole way up to the top here so you can really you know really quite fit something pretty long in here nice small armless unit a nice large pocket now the main compartment hmm take everything out take everything I have in here have it pretty stuff to its max it is is clamshell design so I could open this up and really get into it I have rain jacket Springs here thunderstorms will be rolling around small tarp will blanket which is really unnecessary for the weather but like I said I have my back's pretty sore if I want to lie down on the ground and want some extra cushion right now today wall mount and slap straps and my hammy and you know 420 liter bag I feel like you know that's a lot that's a lot that's a lot to have in there and inside as well is the hood pocket for the reservoir the bladder there's a small small loop up here it is important if you're going to look for a bag that's capable of this look for a loop make sure your heck you'd be able to hang something here for the reservoir keeps it nice in the bag and that's basically the ins and outs of the bag and like I said cheap as I found this online with 70 some dollars I didn't pay that I found this in a clearance bin at a REI in Southern California which I guess makes sense there's not too many people backcountry skiing or snowboarding in the mountains of Southern California which there are whether it's or as snow forty bucks like I couldn't pass this up I was looking for a day bag that was going to work well in the city I can use it for groceries riding my bike carry care my skateboard on my bike and also really use it out in the woods a lot I use this bag a lot last year for work when I was in the forest and it held up well you know it faded in the Sun a lot is black it's gonna track eat more but very very happy with this pack as a whole I think it weighs 3 pounds 3 pounds overall weight and 600 denier 600 denier polyester which drew me to the bag initially I saw in the clearance bin you know I was like oh wow that's got some you know some pretty thick fabric to it I'm going to take that bag out for 40 bucks for a day pack use it to hike carry groceries all that stuff really pleased with this bag in one of the great things I find you as a consumer which I try not to consume too much product wise is funding you know a product that's meant to do one thing and repurposing it and having it be really great and excel at another task you need a fork like I said this is a backcountry bag for skiing and snow sports snowboarding and I've never skied or snowboarding in my life but I have this bag and I've used it a lot for a lot of different things and you know I'm really happy really pleased really pleased with this passion this is Creek signing out with blak outdoors later Turtles you
