The Roland Boot | Chacos Footwear | Field Review

Description

Krik of Black Owl Outdoors takes a look at the Roland Boot from Chacos. While Chacos may be known for their sandals, The Roland Boot is their take on a light-weight, tactical inspired boot. Before our trip to Dolly Sods in early June, Krik needed to replace his non-insulated wilderness boots. The Roland Boot caught his eye because of its flexibility and low weight. While most boots completely cut your off from the textures and nuances of the forest floor, the Roland Boot is thin and flexible enough to retain some feeling of the ground. They also come with a wider toe box than most boots allowing a decent splay of your toes. They are not barefoot boots, but they are minimal in their approach, as they have no waterproof lining and their shank is nylon. Krik predicts they will hold up well because of their full-grain leather construction, but only time will tell!

hey wuzzup turtles creek here with blackout outdoors and today we're going to be taking a look at the rolling boot by choco here's the boot it's a full grain leather boot price is 140 dollars even on chocos website and this is their sort of take on the classic tactical boot getting those quotes in there but the reason why I bought these boots was because my old midweight hiking boots were in pretty bad shape and stony and I were getting ready to go on a trip in early June of this year so late May or excuse me late April early May I was looking for a new pair of boots and I came across these before I go into too much detail about this boot I want to show you my old boots here's my old boot this is the fugitive gtx i believe from Ozil oh and i love these boots this is my second pair of them actually I think I got these at an rei garage sale in anaheim california when i was living in Southern California but i really like these boots like i said this is my second pair and they were really great for work boots and i was using these for work boots not just leisure when i was working in the forest you know for my you know 40 hour week type job in the past and that really really is ruffle and boobs because working in california arizona without a lava rock really abrasive and look at the look at the tread basically non-existent up here under the forefoot a little bit over here but it was just time for a new pair of boots the you know the waterproof lining was compromised because he's worth gore-tex and i still like these boots they're a little narrow I've been real particular about my shoe wear now but these are the boots are replacing yeah so now let's look at that actual let's look at the rolling boot these boots are very lightweight and that's what I wanted there is a shank in here it's nylon I would did not want a steel shank I was going for a lightweight boot all leather waterproof really wasn't a real big factor I really didn't care about that because these are water resistant there's no gore tex or any other type of waterproof lining in these and i wanted a wider forefoot and look at the souls now there's about three-and-a-half millimeter depth to the lugs and choco is calling this sort of part of their outdoor casual line so not super robust hardcore these aren't work boots not what I wanted them for so you can see the tread but you can see it's also flex in the boot and that's what I wanted you can see or feel or hear and you won't be able to feel but there's a little bit of reinforcement in the toe which is nice walking through the forest protect your feet you're bound to kick something drag your feet at some point specially when you get tired that's a nice little feature I really like the look of these boots and this is sort of antique hardware to give it a certain look I really you know wasn't I really don't care about looks so much I was looking for the practicality of the boot with the factors i mentioned earlier but the red laces in that antique hardware really make it look kind of cool I think so take a look at the inside of the boot there's a mesh lining it's brown these boots are very comfortable you know that's not a really thick leather where it's going to take you months and months to break them in if you're getting you know you want to go into the realm of getting like a pair of whites or nicks or Hawthorns or something along those lines is really heavy duty leather boots this did have some break-in period you know Cup a week or two but they're really comfortable and size is pretty true what is this a 10 I'm usually about a 10 10 and a half in a really nice fit for me I'll say it again I chose these boots because they were lightweight I was not looking for a heavy duty work boot in the summer months I don't wear boots really that much at all when I'm in the forest I wear my new balance minimus type shoes but I still wanted to boot just for the fact of keeping my ankle

heck did or from walking on slopes you know not getting to breed down in the inside of my shoe which really low-cut shoes you can have that problem with them a lot so I wanted still a boot but I wanted something lightweight you can see the flex as I've been moving this the flexing the weather up here back in the heel there's still some support its thicker obviously up here you can see where it's sort of pinching on itself you still have some support for the heel and these aren't waterproof like I said but I actually applied that like Kiwi waterproofing spray i think i bought it at dicks and i put two coats on this before we want the dolly sides and we walked on some ridiculously wet you know ball coming up literally up to here really boggy trails and stony was there he can attest to that and the other people in our group and that spray completely waterproof these boots very very impressed with that so like I said the waterproof lining wasn't really an issue because you can put on products afterwards I mentioned it earlier about having a wider a forefoot and I'm really particular about that now with shoes i buy and you can see it on this boot on the website this is still regular width but i can tell you this is wider than most regulars and that's a really great thing because i have wide feet and i don't think I ever really knew that so all the shoes always wearing we're really restrictive in my forefoot and this is so much wider than just those Ozil is I just showed you my old boots it's just a way more comfortable feel when I'm walking my toes have space to spread out and it's just a way more enjoyable experience for me personally when I'm wearing shoes because that barefoot if I can't right I searched relentlessly on the internet for a while looking for boot that fit the bill of the specs I would meant I was mentioning before the lightweight lightweight nature of the boot all leather you know full grain leather quality leather and you know shank was important but really not a thick sole either one on the boot so if you know any other boot companies or makers that make a boot similar to this let me know all I've been able to find is once you start looking for boots like this you start getting into the custom the custom boot market and then Isis of boots go up three four five hundred six hundred dollars not to say they're not worth that because we all know what it takes you know for someone to make something by hand but if you know of any other boot companies that make something some of us let me know that's what I'm trying to say if you have any questions about this boot you know leave a comment below remember this is just an overview I've been wearing these for like i said i got them late April early May so I've been wearing them since then periodically but and they've hope they've held up well and I'm happy with them so far but just keep in mind this is an overview this is not a full review of them being used extended so yeah I hope the video was helpful entertaining nothing else this is Creek starting out with black ow outdoors later turtles
