KABAR - Becker BK2 | Survival Knife | Field Review

Description

Krik of Black Owl Outdoors reviews the popular Becker BK2 survival knife from KABAR. While the BK2 boasts a quarter in thick piece of metal, it's edge, coating and sheath leave much to be desired. The knife is relatively dull from the factory and the coating is coarse, offering increased friction on the blade. The sheath actually dulls the knife with each insertion and extraction. And the Zytel scales feel slippery to the touch. Yes, the steel is a high quality carbon steel, but the knife itself is not ready for use out of the box. If KABAR would have branded it a project knife, the inconsistencies could have been overlooked. If you re-profile the edge, strip the coating, buy a new sheath and some new micarta scales, the BK2 would be an awesome knife.

sup Turtles Creek here black outdoors today I'm going to be doing a review on the BK 2 this is a joint knife between K bar and Becker which I've already done review on another collaboration knife there is the BK 16 companion you can find this knife the BK 2 online for around 50 or 60 dollars right now first I'm going to talk about this sheath which in my mind this sheath is just just I don't have the words for it it's it's just cheap personally this sheath kind of reminds me of one I would get out from the army-navy store when I was younger buying $15 knives that weren't sharpened this is the type of sheath that came with it in all honesty the way this belt loop is so large and and the weight is hanging pivoting on this you know the strap that is plastic everything just feels cheap and I don't like the sheet but being I set is only 50 60 bucks and you're getting you know quality knife material and you know the sheath is definitely something that's being sacrificed quality on something to keep in mind [Applause]

getting in some of the knife specs ten and a half inches overall length five and a quarter blade length 1095 probe and coated quarter inch thick puppy weighs a pound which is a lot in my opinion for a ten inch knife lower over 10 inch knife drop point blade design and the grind I'm going to call us and modify its candy and also k-bar wants to say this is a 20 degree edge angle on a dull edge that came from the factory and one more thing about the sheath I forgot to mention and those people complaining that it's actually galling the night pulling it in and out of the sheath is actually dulling the edge something else to keep in mind so you know what am I going to use this for a knife like this in my kit well with this much weight in this side and the thickness of this knife in my mind it's really only meant to do one thing and that's just a swing and chop so that's what I'm going to use it for and that's what we're going to do some testing with it right now and I have a wrist lanyard on the knife which I highly recommend because of these IDs I tells scales and handle which are found on the BK 16 as well I really do not care for they really offer no grip in my opinion I'm not saying they're quote cheap that they're going to I feel like they're going to break I just don't think the texture and I just don't like the feel when I'm when I'm using the knife which in my opinion is important to have a good grip on on the tool you're going to be using and potentially swinging in this case I'm going to be using at the top something else to keep in mind and the edge did not come sharp so if you want to use this knife as say a project knife spend 50 60 bucks get a nice piece of 1095 pro van and do your own work into the knife you know maybe strip the coating new scales get a sharper edge we profiled if you desire you know maybe you should you know consider this knife but I'm going to say as opposed if you want to purchase the knife that comes right from the factory out of the box sharp edge really do great work with this isn't going to be the knife in my opinion now to chop put this around my wrist and get a couple twists make sure it's tight and secure where I wanted my hand few things to keep in mind I'm going to when you're going to chop or swing we're going to use an axe hatchet Pulaski pick mattock any type of tool that has a cutting edge you're going to swing you want to make sure the path of the knife if you miss your target you want to make sure it's not coming in direct contour you know your leg or foot or knee or anything is in its path okay from low to the ground and I'm swinging here and I say missed this piece of wood it's going to hit the ground in its path it's going to hit the ground if I was standing up and I wasn't square and I'm standing like this and I say I swing up from up here and I missed it's coming it's coming right back towards my leg in my knee which is not good I could alleviate that by sort of squaring myself and I could swing here and you know even though I'm swinging and missing it's coming right between my legs and I'm not going to be a junkie of hitting hitting a limb or anything so do some chopping at this piece of wood right now

took a little longer than I wanted it goes through like I said this is not come sharp and see why sort of a dull tool is an unsafe tool let's try just try to pound it through this trying to baton it and see what happens here switch hands with it kind of like having this up in here is not

nice piece of kindling let's try to do some carving with the dough knife

this is dull and I know I could have put a better edge on this for the sake of the video the users knife but the part of this I wanted that you know point was to show how this knife comes from the factory you're not going to pull it out and have you know shavings sharp making really nice feather sticks from the factory

like a little bit of work this could be a really nice knife something you have to decide before you purchase this if it's if it's your time and effort and energy you want to invest in making this a much better knife it's correct signing out with blak outdoors later turtles
