hey what's up Turtles its Creek here with blackout outdoors and today I'm going to be doing a video on how to tie the jam knot also known as an arbor knot or Canadian Jam knot but basically it's a self cinching knot that tightens on itself and can be used as a lashing to go around to hold two parts together that you need as you can imagine the lashing would but it's very simple and to get into it basically you're just going to need a piece of cordage and depending on the task you want to use it for you know will determine the length of cordage you need but to start the way I've seen it the way I learned it I'm going to show you the first way but there's some variability which I will show after I'd show you the first way so to start you just tie an overhand knot on one end of the cordage which is we're going to call this the stop or not and that'll make sense once I get into it and only going down a couple inches from the stop or not we're going to again tie another overhand knot so what you have is that and then you're going to take the other end of the cordage and pass it through the second knot we tied like here pull that through and essentially or you don't have created this loop now as I'll just show it around my arm for fur at first and then you'll see once I start tightening this pull back on itself that stop or not stays there as I keep rotating and pulling you can see how that cinches on itself and it doesn't move and that's the basic principles of the knot now I'm going to show you some applications and the variability I choose to employ because this can be a pain in the butt to untie if you cinch down with all your might around whatever you want to quote lash or tie together and this is pretty easy to untie right now because I didn't really cinch

hard on it pull it hard or pull it tight on it but same steps apply same theory but the variability where I'm going to employ and it'll make more sense once I use it a different application is I'm going to tie a slip knot in here or a quick release function of this into the stop or not and that's going to be my new stop or not again tie another overhand knot a little bit down from it right here and I'm going to do this around my wool blankets I just wanted to carry this as perhaps a sack the blanket and I wanted to put maybe like a little tool roll in here or a fire kid a small survival kit a woods kit whatever you want to call it but I'm going to roll this up because I want to carry this around my body is slung over a shoulder have it rolled go around one end the other end of my cordage go through the second knot we tied pull it through pick up all the slack and then pull rotate until it cinches down on itself like such

all right now that I have one side secured this is a little bit different the second knots a little bit different in this because the other end of my cordage is already occupied but to do this I'm just going to tie my quick-release Slipknot in here and go around here and here's the sake this is going to be the actual sling we're going to call this I'm going to take my working end with the stopper knot in it go over as it's facing me go over that and I'm tying the second knot actually around as oppose that I did before and sliding this through I'm tying it around it now and then just once I have here employ the physics cinch it on the direction it needs to and now I've effectively secured rolled up my blanket now I can sling the server or shoulder and just carry it with me now really simple just the basic use of the knot you can use this too if you have a big sleeping bag in a compression sack I have to cinch it down by using multiple you know directions to get this but to untie it like I said can be a pain in the butt well it's nice because I have these quick releases in here undo that one and I'll undo a second one over here and I got half the battle because if I did not do that quick release this knot can be very hard to untie this one's going to be difficult regardless but this makes it a little bit easier with that quick release in it and to untie this one it's pretty easy because I didn't do any early weight bearing tasks on this super easy non tie but now I'm just going to show another application if you wanted to use this as a lashing so

follow me over here you know it's like I said this can be used as a lashing and I'm just going to show it in one simple application as you can imagine if you want to put a ridge pull-up for a structure or anything use your imagination I'm going to start the same way do it the same way I'm going to put my stopper knot in there with quick-release Slipknot if you will put my second knot in there now that I have that I'm gonna pretend this is a ridge Pole go through my second knot once I have here now I'm just going to cinch this around when I come there come around the other side the tree because this is the force that's going to pull these together let's have that I'm just going to go around it once to really stop this that if it does want to slip through the knot this way it won't and not going to anything fancy just do a little bit of friction winter now it's cold dexterity goes quick in the fingers and I'll see actually how strong this is I'm going to try to put all my weight on it just to show the strength as can be and basically it's just the not just the just the jam knot with a few wraps around the tree that was just to demonstrate the strength that this can be used for now to untie it it's a really another important step because it can be a pain in the butt so what I did in the back like I said just use some friction I gave myself a quick release point here unwrap it and you want to be mindful with what you're going to be doing this with because it can be very difficult as you can see if you want to get a close-up in here so nee here's my stop or not but you can see the quick release I'll be easy to undo but this second nod you can see how really tight that is compared to the first one of how this can be very difficult to undo try to undo this first stop or not all right now I have here I'm going myself bring it back here and give a little bit yourself some more room to work I'm gonna come actually and slide this out excuse me slide the pullout so here now the first stopper knot was really easy you can see the force how much that lines pinched so to undo it I'm just going to try taking down as much as I can down to the end by holding the knot and taking it down and just that easy now I have this knot in here that I can undo and putting that quick release Slipknot in there makes all the difference if I didn't do that I'd have two of these knots very tight very difficult to undo with just the fingers and that's basically all there is to it hope the video is helpful and informative
