DIY Wood Burning Backpacking Stove Overview

Description

Krik of Black Owl Outdoors shows you how to build a highly efficient wood-burning backpacking stove in the likes of John's from Intense Angler.

Check out http://www.youtube.com/intenseangler for awesome outdoor videos.

The stove is highly efficient, cheap to build, simple to construct and weighs very little. Throw is in your billy can the next time you're out bushcrafting, or use it as a cheap alternative to traditional store-bought gas stoves.

Remember to check all rules and regulations in your area pertaining to fire when dealing with open fires.

Outer Can: 22 oz. w/ 3/8 inch holes.

Inner Can: 11-12 oz. w/ 1/4 inch holes.

hereis up Turtles it's Creek here black out outdoors and today I wanted to do a video showing a homemade DIY camp stove that I mean now this one on my left and your right has one that's been tested sort of played around with and I got this design off of intense anglers channel John with the tents angler I encourage you if you're not familiar that channel to go check it out he's got some really great videos played around with this design got the hole size where I want to get a really burning efficient with the stand that I made as well over here is the outer can the inner can and the stove stand and basically the tools I use to create this for a pair of tin snips a drill a screw gun doesn't even need to be a power drill could be a cordless drill and a round file and to start this outer stove this is the this is the top of the can if you can imagine I'd open it up at the top here to let the food contents out this is the top but then it turns into the bottom and these are I want to say 3/8 size 3/8 of an inch hole in the description though will be the exact measurements for all these holes and then in the actual top of this as the stove stands I cut out with ten snips roughly the circumference of the smaller can because this will nest inside of it which I'm going to actually finish and show for the video in the actual inner can itself the bottom of that can there's a whole series of holes drilled and then another row up top here of alternating holes going the whole way around and on the outside can as well these holes are alternating and run the entire outside of the stove and then I made a stove stand here this was actually wasn't to nose chicken but it's that size that type of can of tuna can which I drilled two holes top bottom and then just cut it out with tin snips to allow air flow to come through this and basically that's it and some people want to call this a gasifier I'm not going to because one of this not that familiar or know exactly how those operate but I know this is a very efficient design I believe with a gasifier really probably not ever going to get a true one without forced air in some way but anyways this is a very very super efficient type stove it uses all natural fuel which is a plus a few different reasons one you don't have to carry any extra fuel with you and that will cut down your weight pretty much anywhere you go you could find fuel to use the type of fuel I would use for this I have a few pieces here some hardwood baton down and I'm going to do a video of a boil water test with this stove once I finish it's going to be a different video so you can reference that to see this in action so what I need to do to finish this is I need to get my round file and get this whole small enough to where I can nest this smaller cane down into it I'm going to do that right now I just have a little tool roll here I have some multiple files inside this as well but I have my Ron file right now and basically what I'm going to be doing is just taking this down I'm actually not going to be removing any material I'm just going to be sort of folding this lip down on itself to get the appropriate size because I need this to be a really tight fit to seal and nest I needed to actually seal pretty well so I'm going to keep doing this sort of test fit until I can actually get a force force down and sealed really well so I'm just going to work my way around it and keep trying until it fits and I do have a sort of a gauge or a marker to where I'm not going to go to there's actual sort of rib will on this can which I know is pretty much the circumference of the smaller one so I'm just going to kind of stop before I get to that and just get real close to it and then I'm going to keep sort of mock or test fitting that stove or excuse me that the inner can of the stove all right that's probably good I can probably get this down in there now so that was an elapsed time this probably took me I don't know ten minutes probably cuz I left myself a little bit of access that wasn't necessary on one around the lip but nonetheless once I get it to where I know it's not just going to fall right through and I can work it down to get a really nice tight seal if you want to see how there's really no gaps between where it seals that nuts down they're really nice no real gaps that's important run all the airflow coming out through this can not coming around the sides here that will decrease its efficiency if there are gaps between this so I was taking my time making sure I got a nice seal because you can always take a little bit more off we can't put back if you overcompensate and go too far and that's basically all there is to it once you have it at this point and I just fashioned like I mentioned before our stove can or a pot stand excuse me for the top of this that sits and fits really nicely on this sits in there really well

no really wobble fits inside the slip down inside of it and I was thinking potentially maybe to make this nest a little bit nicer the whole thing maybe take like an inch section out of this that way I can maybe bend it down and be able to fit inside of this for storage which I might try to do I didn't make another one this for the videos because this one worked in I just did one too but I may cut this one down to get it to fit inside that we're going to pop it back on still be strong and it'll be able to nest all inside of it but yeah that's basically all there is to it like I said I'm going to do in another video on this actually in use and we'll be boiling some water see how long it takes see how the efficiency of the stove is with the fuel type all that just want to caution if you are going to do this and you do want to use this depending if there's restrictions for fire as opposed to a top of the canister stove in the western US most of the summer most of the year you cannot have open flames and this type of stove would definitely probably not be allowed to be used just keep in mind like I said any type of fire restrictions when you're going to be outside in general out in the outdoors most forest fires are started by humans not a good thing but nonetheless this is really easy why I said it's really cool one you can make it yourself I forgot to mention beginning that this outer can is a 22 ounce can if you look on the label of the food you want to make this yourself here in the grocery store looking for this is a 22 ounce and the smaller one inside is like eleven eleven and a half twelve ounce they they vary if you have any experience with making any DIY camp stoves this design in general similar gasifier type stoves let me know any improvements you can see on this design let me know if you used you can link a video all that all that stuff now I was doing this outside because all our videos are shot outside but I want to caution if we're going to be working with metal it's a very good idea to wear eye protection wear gloves I didn't today because I really wasn't doing too much but even a little bit of filing can potentially pose a risk a piece of metal in your finger in your eye the chance is always there so please exercise caution I didn't want to do this outside using a drill so I didn't want to have metal shavings filings all out here all over the forest that's why I chose not to bring accordance Joe out with me and make this out here which I could have it could be done but I just want to exercise or ask you to exercise caution when you're doing any type of stuff like this and in general doing any any work with tools remember to check out black outdoors on Instagram check us out on Facebook check out black outdoors calm
