hey wassup Turtles its Creek here with black outdoors today I'm going to be doing a video it's part of a series it's going to be a series on how to hang a bear bag or a food bag in potential bear country there's a lot of different styles for different situations but I'm going to show one highlight one today that sort of falls along the lines of the PCT style to hang a bear bag and this really great idea a friend of mine you know suggested it and I thought good idea so I'm going to start a series on it right now twelve follow me over here I sort of have things start to set up on the ground here I have it I have cordage I have two different strands is highlight this highlight neon and this red and I don't have one piece of quarters long enough to perform this task at the hang this bag so what I've done is put a bend in here I've done videos on this I want to think this is the Weaver's been very strong for securing two pieces of quarters together to make longer lengths see the sort of principles in the friction behind how that's keeping those together the way they're hugging hope you start with that make sure I have long enough piece of cordage

the end I'm not throwing over the tree red end I'm just going to secure it to this tree so if I do throw it over I don't want this but potentially following it and zipping through the why in the tree I'm just going to secure it really quick to this tree over here doesn't have to be anything fancy or you know just I just need to stay here should some wait come on it good to go simple I'm going to get a rock now and attach it to the other end of my of my cordage stay there soon have a piece of cordage earth around take my throwing end in my cordage and this is a nice-sized rock because it's small enough I'm used to throwing any baseballs and stuff of that nature and rocks don't want anything too big that you can't control that's too heavy you don't really need a large rock they got weight I'm going to secure this piece of cordage to this to this rock by leaving enough little working end out here start underneath the rock by going like you know bringing it around to the top and sort of yeah you know I'm going to secure brace it here sort of twist them around each other to create that point right there and then continue back to this side and I'm going to take my working end and pass it through this side keeping that Center and bring this end over here sort of wrap this around pass under here and I'll just put a couple half hitches in this

okay now that rocks secured to this piece of cordage and what I've scoped out so far stoner you wanna get the shot of the why I'm aiming for industry above me right here say you know this this methods really good if you don't have a perfect branch if there's not a nice branch hanging out there's not a big you know a branch shots alive you really don't want to do the serve our dead branch does that they have potential breaking it and making you know potential hazard hurting someone but I've chosen it I've chose this why because it's out in the open it's high enough off the ground and sort of the principles and sort of doing this bear hang is that you want and maybe it'll make more sense once I get up if you're not familiar with with bear hangs but you want it at least ten feet off the ground and at least four feet away from any piece of wood meaning the trunk or down from a branch and I'll make more sense as I get get the bag up off the ground and I'll explain about throw the physics and the geometry of why this works but right now I'm gonna try to throw this rock through that why good

and we're going to do this I want to make sure nothing's all my quarters I kind of have it laid out sort of neat sooner you're actually on the cordage just pop yourself let me pull it out from there

all right now we're safe now we got now I can proceed let's try it one shot you have me five bucks if I get it first shot oh yeah Moneyball all right follow me up here now stem actually - I'm going to tie this now that I have had a server the Y and you can see I don't know if you could see in the video the way this maybe this court went flying by the camera but it did take tension and this would have kept moving if I didn't have the security

let's go back down to my bag I'm going to untie the rock now from my cordage

and potentially if you're camping for you know multiple nights you're going to be doing this as a daily routine why not keep the keep the rock you use if you like it

now the next step to use actually to attach to the bag involve involves carabiner I've stuck on my waist this is the climbing carabiner weighted I mean cement for take some weight I'm going to use that but first I'm going to tie figure eight knot on the end of this loop that's going to take a lot of weight and bear over a lot of weight I've done under uh excuse me a video on how to do this so I'm not going to really stop and explain too much you can check out that video for reference this is the figure eight knot really strong knot

all right got that in there attaches to my carabiner and now I'm going to attach this to my bag for the video sake I'm going to say this is my foods going to be in here ideally you'd really want in a dry bag or a bag of the potentially if it's going to rain you know your foods not kind of get soaked hanging in the air but I just had my bag on me today you can use different bags you know just anything to really contain the food put a dry bag is a really good idea alright now that I have that set up I'm going to step back from the tree and sort of gauge for next step in getting this hitting this bear Haggin completed now this part stored a trial-and-error there are there's some geometry involved in it but I got a sort of abstract to think for a second I'm going to start pulling the bag up the tree thing you want to get it going up a tree you might have to come around behind me the bag going up the tree and where I stopped where I stopped now you can imagine how far that the bags hanging up from where the Y of the tree is and that distance from the wide down to my bag it's going to be the distance of how far potentially how far the bag is going to be away from the tree because it's important to get the bags away from the tree because bears are using palm trees they can reach the fall out and got your bag if it's right next to it so it's important to have to be away from the tree so I'm sort of gauging right now how far I think I'm going to be able to pull this away from the tree that's what this distance I'm measuring right now now look that looks pretty good that looks pretty good all right now the next step Sonne follow me up here as I'm keeping the bag suspended where I want it up on the trunk of the tree above us I'm going to get a stick that's thick enough because the thickness of this stick depends on how much weights in the bag depending if it's just you backpacking camping by yourself or you got a group of people you know might want to take a rope but but this is directly related to how much weights in the bag how thick the stick need to be but I'm going to place the stick on there quarters here I'm going to go around it once I'm going to hold that there by bugs in my eyes I'm going to take this piece of cordage here and I'm going to wrap it around itself to create this loop you see this loop this is the static gang coming up I sort of twisted it on itself I'm going to push this over here and tighten this up you can see it formed this loop now and now that's effectively holding this piece or a piece of wood this stick in the line now I'm going to lower the bag back down let the stick do its thing for now come back to the bag now clip this piece of cordage that's coming out at the sticks been tied to the long end I'm going to bring that over to my bag clip that through my beaner like such

and I went back up I'll show you what this has effectively done make sure I know where my quarters now that has stopped it I'd stop the bag at a fixed point in Portage I'll show you what I'm doing now right now the bag is being kept up by friction and me holding keeping tension on this line excuse me I tell you if you want to come around here I'll show you the method I'm going to grab this way all the weight right now is just on the friction of the tree this this is under a lot of pressure so I'm going to do is take my working in throw it around while continuing to hold this I'm using strength to hold this I'm just going to wrap this around and now I've got a pretty good lot of points of contact out to secure I'm just going to secure this end up it's working in

over here

and that's good to go and ideally you want to get this as hot as you can where you going to tie this off because you know animals are really cool animals are close to the ground you know they're going to be down hearing it to figure a lot of the world is at this height or lower anything up above them potentially might act as a different type of challenge it might deter them you know some of the lazy ones from even attempting to see what this is maybe your hands smell a little bit of food but nonetheless animals are really smart they look for food every single day they have to survive there's really no one foolproof way to keep you know food away from animals and bears you know this is this is a lot this is this is going to work really well for you but why this is working right now my head my straps hanging I know is that ten feet see if I don't know if I can jump in touch didn't get it pretty good job you can see

over 10 feet definitely far enough away from this wide tree that I have it really effective method almost true I hope this video was helpful they said it's going to be in a series this is a particular style of you know if you have similar elements tree specifically to hang hang a tie from but really quick rule of thumb you really want to put your food any scented items toothpaste lip balm sunscreen all that in your bear hanging out you don't want anything that smells like food or scent it in your tent with you or around your camp I want to touch on if you're going to camp you want to try to put this at least 100 meters away from your camp the food you want to cook 100 meters away from where you put this where you put your bear hang and where you where you're sleeping gets sort of form this triangle and ideally you want to be upwind of your food where you cooked and where you put your bear hang meaning a bear is going to travel it's going to catch a scent through the wind coming in its face if it's walking upwind your camp still 100 meters this way and it stops here it's probably going to stop here maybe investigate but there's going to be no more scent coming from upwind to sort of draw the animal into your camp
