Fjallraven Friluft 35 Forest Edition | Hunting/Hiking Backpack | Field Overview

Description

Krik of Black Owl Outdoors takes a look at the Friluft 35 Forest Edition by Fjallraven. Recently we were contacted by Fjallraven and asked if we would be interested in checking out some of their gear. Being Fjallraven fans and anticipating their stateside landfall, we accepted graciously. The Friluft 35 Forest Edition is the first pack sent to us from Sam over at Fjallraven US and after a couple months of testing, Krik gives his initial opinions on the pack.

hey wassup Turtles Creek here with blackout outdoors I'm excited to share with you this new pack that I've been using and it is the fjällräven free lift forest 35 litre pack now the forest is a different addition to the free loops which is more of a traditional technical backpacking style bag if you will and this bag is sort of specifically designed for bird hunting and some of those features will be apparent once I get into the bag but before I do that I'd like to thank the folks over at a fjällräven us who have been kind enough to send us this bag for testing and evaluation alright enough of that though let's get into the details of the pack the pack costs two hundred dollars and one of the features I really love about it is the g1000 material the pack is mainly constructed of and that is a blend of natural and synthetic materials and the darker color that my hands touching is the g1000 my hand is tracing right now is sort of a daisy chain and there's two on the front there's one on this side my hands tracing and there's another one which I'll show you can see there's almost there's slits cut in this and what you could do is you could weave through here but there's a specific extra bag that comes with the pack that I will get out and show you how it attaches to the school system it's on both sides my fingers tracing the other on this side and if it's hard to pick up that's okay at the moment because I will get the other bag out and show you in detail how this works and what it looks like another feature I really love about this pack is the fact that you can carry water bottles on the outside of the bag so you have one on each side and there's a 40 ounce bottle on this side and it fits in there nice and snug this is sort of a elasticized if you will type a material more of like a stuffed pocket but if you out or even you know even shows on their website you can put water bottles in here I'll show you around the other side

and I have a smaller water bottle on this one

and because it says overview not a review of this bag I'm not sure how this stretchy material will hold up to repeated use being stretched with heavy water bottles in it over time I've had packs where you know this will wear out and then basically have a floppy floppy pocket here so when the review comes we'll see how these held up maybe there could have been just like a some nylon webbing sort of crisscross through here to help keep whatever's in here you can be able to cinch it down I won't know that until this bag gets reviewed and it has been used more extensively and there are two compression straps on each side one here with a release buckle and the other one right here moving on to the brain or lid of the pack and get my notebook out of there it's kind of goofy carrying my notebook up top here but you know what it worked so you have four anchor points a little bit of reflective material on them you have this elastic or bungee cord with a cord lock this little brain is comprised of two pockets one is accessible from the outside of the bag I really like these loop single finger zipper pulls one zipper on this lets have my knife in there and my little kit sort of goes in any bag and what's nice about these brain or top up sections of the pack is that you sort of have this plastic if you will coding to help any water penetrating to the main compartment of the bag if you don't have the rainfly one and this bag does come with the rain fly and I will touch on that when I get to it as I mentioned there is a second pocket with this brain and that is on the underside so just on unbuckle and you can see then you have this zippered pocket as well and actually in here is the bird bag it's fjällräven is calling this accessory that comes with the pack is included and I will show this towards the end once I get through all the other specs

of the bag so the buckle here is a lot of slack in it they try to open this up or how to pack full we're going to show the layer underneath here you could remember this buckle will come in handy later and then you have a single sort of storm flap if you will or closure to the main compartment this is a top load only and you can see I really don't have this bag packed full at all being 35 liters obviously maybe not obviously any backup but this is more than capable of being an overnight pack a single night pack for sure and I don't have a packed super you know accordingly to what I might take on the trip I just have things in here to bust it out show size wise and some of the toting capability and lastly I have my rain jacket in here I do have a stuff sack for this but I wasn't trying to save space in here I just want to throw things in the pack for the video so on the ground what I pulled out is a DND hammock 3 meter by 3 meter tarp which is pretty big and can definitely be stuffed smaller in its sack there's a whole bunch of odds and ends for hammock King this was leftover from a trip I just took not just the one link as a whole bunch of crap in here concerning hammock camping camping excuse me water filter in here and then my bag or my rain jacket which already mentioned and this is an internal frame pack and it has a really interesting frame design another reason why I was interested to check this out it's because of the frame and the vent system ventilation system used on this pack but as you can see and I'll be quiet you can hear this that's under tension and when I flipped it around it'll make more sense but that's under tension and that runs the whole way down to the bottom of the pack and if you really wanted to you can get down stuff something in here which then is actually on the underside of the ventilation system but I'll get a ventilation system specifically and one more feature you might not be able to pick it up but the same sort of coded plastic buffer is on the bottom of the pack that my hand is running at the very bottom it is again coated for moisture as moisture barrier it might not be able to see it but it is like I mentioned nice feature again it's a really nice feature to see in a bag and since I did touch on the ventilation system I want to show you that next here's the ventilation system they're calling the free loft ventilation and again this is under tension and this is the first time I ever used the pack that had this sort of ventilation system this isn't just reserved for for this fjällräven bag other hiking technical backpacking bags you have utilized this but I've never used it and I was really excited to try it and let me tell you you notice it you really do I was out testing this bag one day going for a hike with it with the you know the same type of gear the next day I was trying out a new bag that did not have this and you could really tell the difference of the amount of sweat that was accumulating on my back and as I was mentioning the pack that didn't have this type of ventilation system there's so much sweat on my back and in my clothes and my you know next day didn't have it with this at all but you can see right here my fingers are moving there's probably almost close to two inches of distance between this bright blaze orange material and this vent or mass excuse me or net if you will moving down to the hip belt again it's really interesting design because the frame is coming my fingers are tracing this is actually the frame there's the skeleton if you will of the bag and it comes up it sort of runs this whole thing and then you do have a sort of stay in the middle on the inside of bag there isn't a single stay that you see in a lot of different types of packs this almost reminds me of like almost an external frame pack and then I just wrap the bag around it so it's kind of cool but you don't see a designated sort of lumbar pad down here it's just this mesh under tension and it's very comfortable I really love how this like instantly hugged my body when I put it on because you have the curvature of this part of the bag and frame and I'll make more sense I will put this bag on you will see me wearing it but I really do like this sort of lumbar or lack thereof system with these big wide wide hip belt on each side and each side of the hip belt does have a pocket I just have a long piece of paracord hanged in there and you can see here is the first nod sort of to the hunting aspect is that you have these little spaces or sleeves if you will for for shells cartridges shotgun shells specifically is a bird hunting bag and how many are in there see if you can get my arithmetic wrong 1 2 3 4 right 5 6 ok 6 total on there but it doesn't really take away from the pocket if you're not going to put shells in there obviously you can still use it as a pocket on the left side of the hip belt again you have a second pocket on the hip belt and it has a little food bar in there now but there are no sleeves for cartridges in this one just a regular pocket and these are definitely shaped large enough that they are useful they really are I know a lot of you are watching this video on our channel like tactical bags or organization and these more backpacking technical style bags don't have the complete organization as you know tactical bags you see it be a little bit more thoughtful with how you utilize just the small little spaces throughout these packs have a grab handle up here and to load lifters 1 2 1 2 nice contoured shoulder straps really big fan of the contour and you have a sternum strap that runs on a rail see the rail in there

and that's actually covered as well for comfort when you're moving this is moving around your body not a tight fixed strap there's some movement in this line dynamic movement and there's a whistle on this part of the buckle black on gray and I did mention before this pack comes with a rain fly so this is the bottom of the bag you have this little tab right here nice healthy hook and loop field right there and you have the blaze orange rain fly to keep in theme with this as a hunting tag you have this piece of cord that runs the entire sort of perimeter or the outside of the bag you can cinch that down once you get on it and then you have these little Clips right here then to help secure this to the bag when you put it on

jam that on back in there okay so here's the bird bag I made mention to before and this straps to the outside of the bag which I will show but basically it's just the mesh front here some reflective material in here and the back is just not sure exactly what it is type of material this is included and they're actually two straps on here and let me put something in it put something in here just to show you the bag in action this attaches to the main bag but it also can be used as a sort of a small pack in itself because it comes with these two straps which again utilize that Daisy stains stop a daisy chain style that that's on the forest itself with just cut slits through it and I can put this on and use this as almost a small pack in itself pretty cool right so you have these toggles on the bag itself that work in conjunction with this daisy chain style and this bag does attach to the main bag the bird bag attaches to the forest itself via there's toggles and daisy chain kind of a slick little design right I think so there's one side try to keep it even now let's take a look at it and one last feature that keeps the bag then situated upright I think it's pretty cool right especially for hunting season for those of you that are out in the forest during really popular hunting times even if you have no plan to use this pack for a honey-bag you still have the ability to put something blaze orange on the outside of your bag to make you visible and safer during a high volume of hunters out during the season happens when you're backpacking nice and snug

so you can see what the bag looks like on me and sort of its profile it definitely you know sort of sits nice and played to my bag our excuse me my back which I like I definitely like the profile this bag and it is super comfortable for my torso and if you're familiar with any of the other bag reviews or overviews I've done on this channel I'm a very big stickler for bag comfort a bag has to be comfortable especially in this vein wearing these bags are built for comfort being worn you know all day with weight in them and this bag is very comfortable fits me well I'm about 5 9 165 pounds I really like the fact that I'm able to cinch the hip belt to me up in front of me is close to pull away and like I mentioned earlier I'd really really love this g1000 material it's soft it feels this more more at home it just feels more place in the force then really thin sort of noisy ripstop if you will so I really love this t1000 and it's bag only weighs about 1,300 grams which is about 2 pounds 13 ounces so it feels very very light when there's nothing in it but it carries weight really really well so there's anything I didn't touch on or any questions please don't hesitate leave a comment let me know I'd like to thank the folks over at fjällräven us for sending out this bag go check out their website and check out all the gear they have this is critic signing out with blackout outdoors later Turtles

you
