Yellow Birch Tree [Betula alleghaniensis] Identification

Description

While out looking for a lost knife of Stony's, Krik spies a Yellow Birch tree along Lyman Run in the Pennsylvania Wilds. Unsure of the tree's species at first, Krik offers some tips on using a tree identification guide to ID while in the field.

hey wassup Turtles it's creek here with blackout outdoors now I stoney and I are out looking for his knife we're walking by lyman run with the intent of looking for the night that he he left out here yesterday but notice this birch tree and I wanted to highlight it wanted to point it out wanted to shoot a quick video on it because birds trees are so awesome the one the really beautiful trees they're really cool awesome hardwoods but as a lot of people know this really this bark is incredible for fire incredible for fire i'm going i'm just going to collect some of this and put it in my pocket i'm going to be going to be thoughtful where I collect it from I don't want to rip too much off of the bark and expose too much inner bark or really peel big piece back I just want to get the stuff that's sort of hanging off and it easily comes off I'm not even sure what type of birch this is actually puts on this in my pocket I'm just going to keep this in my chest pocket and fill these up what's great is I think this is a yellow birch okay but what's great I'm looking at this characteristic i have a leak here and it's really really not common to be able to get a mature size tree and a leaf of it to help identify it at eye level you can see the characteristics of this it's serrated which would be a huge identifier the shape you know it would be better if I'd a branch down at eye level but since I have a leaf i'm going to try i'm gonna get my book out and get a bug eyed and this is just a then the autobarn society you feel good for trees I'm just going to go through try to find the birch so I found where the birches are there we go I'm Shauna matches characteristic I think these are yellow birches it has a little bit of a yellow tint to it the way I'm looking at it the tree I'm sort of seeing it look at this picture and as I'm looking up it it definitely has it's not white

you wish i had a twig one of the characteristics of visits saying is that there's a slight wintergreen wintergreen smell yeah when when the twigs and foliage are crushed I'm going to take one of these leaves and try to break it up and see if I can get a cent from it

twigg gave me a little bit wintergreen absolutely absolutely now it's in the twig I'm gonna break the leaf up

let's try to expose a lot of it really break it up with the veins across the veins see not so much from the lead but in that foliage it definitely had that wintergreen smell I just drop that an interview there's certain birch where birch beer comes from root beer birch beer like a flavor for soda when you break open the twig you tasted it I don't have that birch taste but this definitely had that wintergreen smell and that's not the only characteristic I'm going to try to identify this tree with I'm looking at the leaves looking at the bar the way the bark is looking at the 10 of the bark and through all of that I'm deducing I think this is a yellow birch having gone through all this and looked at all the other birches that that I can find in this book to me this is a yellow bird so you're watching this you know a lot about birch trees or trees in general you're going to help me there's actually another another specimen over here I'm going to walk out and take a look at but if you know about birds trees or have a good eye for characteristics of trees either or you know anything please let me know and look how it look how thin this park is this is very thin this is papery this isn't a paper birch but this is very thin as as birch bark as I've seen on other types of birch trees it's not all burcheeze peel and not all feel like this

go and gather some more stuff that's really light hanging off right here like I said

I don't use this to get our campfire started later and you know you know we're using Prai all right now probably we are using you know not forged gathered what ourselves reason would from you bought from a fellow but why not gather while I can and I could get my campfire started with trash with cardboard but part of origin it's fun and I'm and I'm gonna I'm being very respectful as I'm taking this bark off for the street like I said I'm taking it from places that's not gonna peel a lot of bark back and expose sort of unexposed areas of the tree I want to really be respectful and to take things that are already sort of falling off on its own you know and and be thankful you thankful and I'm able to take this this is correct signing out with black outdoors later turtles
