hey what's up Turtles its Creek here with blackout outdoors and today I'm going to be doing a video showing and explaining the Marlin spike hitch now in the application I'm going to use it for it's going to be used in conjunction with sitting in a hammock chair if you will but the spike hitch the Marlin spike hitch has a lot of different uses and now on this birch tree which is a yellow birch I have my tree hugging strap this is I believe one and a half inch nylon and I like to use a thicker nylon around a tree that way it won't really dig in and it'll spread the weight more evenly on the outside of the tree do less harm on the tree but to do this spike hitch I'm going to be using this in conjunction with a toggle and what a toggle is is what I here have in my hand and this is beechwood so it's a pretty strong would you ideally want to do this on a hardwood and they are sold with this being metal if you do want to use this is very popular in hammock camping I'm just getting into using this sort of method for hanging hammock as opposed to an Atlas strap or the other strap with you know with loops in it but this is pretty cool and to do this I have my toggle have my length here you're going to try to gauge where you think this toggle needs to be on the height of the strap taking in consideration the swoop of what you're going to be sitting in or your hammock and that'll be some of justing moving this up or down but that comes with setting up a hammock anytime but to start I'm going to take this fold this up on itself over here once as I have that hold this and fold this over so it looks like this take my toggle go under here through back here hold that and then just let it tighten up on itself and that's all there is to it and now to hang my hammock there's going to be a strap or cord is going to come over here but you can see another application using this with in conjunction with a toggle is I have now of a handhold in this piece of cordage or a handle say for instance I had a big load of firewood that I wanted to carry and I wanted to strap it it was pretty far from camp

you know use your imagination I could tie it up put this in here then have something to hold onto and carry as opposed to trying to wrap something around my hand which can dig in not comfortable now I just have the handle really cool really versatile but in this I'm going to use it for a camp chair I have do this one more time you can see it slide the toggle out and as I slide it out this unfolds on itself really easy really easy and it's just that easy when there's weight on it and you'll see but to do it again make a loop here with my tag end running over my tag in running over pinch that there fold it up to get that take my toggle over through here go under back back out and this is just really really easy in cold weather because you can see there's no futzing around with knots trying to tie anything now I have a fixed anchor here to attach my little chair to and I'll do it one more time just to make sure hopefully you can see it and just to bring it home fold my tag end up here I have this loop hanging this is the tag end running over I have this little loop formed I'm going to fold that and roll it up on itself so that you have the space in here for your toggle go through go under and now I'm pulling this with the toggle out through the loop and as I pull it tight try to Center the toggle and that's all there is to it now behind me behind the camera right now I have this little camp chair I made this is a small camp chair I made small hammock this is its maiden voyage today on the woods testing it out going to do a video on it but one of the key things to keep in mind if you're going to have something weight bearing using this system with the Marlin spike hitch and the toggle is you need to make sure the weight is not on the toggle and what that means is I'll show you and the weight has to be on the not on the cordage and not on the toggle so I'm going to do I have a loop in my hammock chair if you will and I'm going to go over the toggle like this but instead of having the weight here you can see how the weight most of this is going to be actually on the toggle stressing that now I want to make sure this is back up actually on the bunch in the little hitch we did you can see as I put weight on that this isn't getting the weight this is just keeping the hitch in place and all the weight is getting transferred to the bunch of nylon and that's important you want to make sure that's at this point before you put any weight and all your weight on it and that's all there is to it this is a really comfortable little seat gets me off the ground my feet are on the ground still cold but it gets my body off the ground get it comfortable can sling it anywhere and just to show you how easy to take it how easy it is to take the hitch out when all my weight has been applied to the system just take this off of the hitch really easy loop and then do this I'm just going to take it here take a little bit of pressure loosen that up slide the toggle out and bam good to go and you can keep this toggle in your tree straps if you want that way each time you come out you don't to look for a piece of wood anything like that doesn't you know to keep in your stuff sack just keeping the line adjust it as the distance of the tree dictates all that stuff I hope this video is helpful if you're going to experience with this or other types of cool ways to hang a hammock starting type of seat please let me know leave a comment remember to check out blackout doors on facebook blackout doors calm our Instagram feed all the stuff we're putting up online this is Creek starting out with black outdoors later Turtles
