Mountain Camp Renovations | Fire Pit: Part 1

Description

*Available in HD - We finally decided to do some exterior improvements to our mountain camp. Up first is creating a mountain stone fire ring beneath the shag bark hickory. But before we get to building, we have to dismantle our previous attempt and level some ground.

what's up Turtles Creek here with blackout outdoors and Stoney and I are up at camp today and we're going to be making some improvements to the property so rubber camp which is our family's property in the country and we're going to be working on the fire ring which is over in this direction for me and which you'll see in a minute I have some hand tools in the back of my truck that we're going to use today I'm gonna get that out and move over there here's a firing you can see that and it's pretty big and some time last year I spent a little bit time by myself up here leveling this part out right here on the upslope of the firing and it worked it worked really well for the time being but it's time now to just dismantle this firing and probably shift it over a little bit not sure exactly what we're going to do but I know we're going to take the firing apart I'm going to rake all this out clean it out and start moving some dirt to get it closer to level I'm gonna need some new gloves how's the last rock with the fire ring it's all dismantled now so I want to get the metal rake out and just rake all the work surface now to see see what we really want to do I Reagan didn't really take any time at all but this gives me a good idea of how the ground sitting and what I want to do above the firing like I said it's pretty flat on the uphill side of the Ring below it you know whatever Ronna Hill we're on a mountain so what I want to do now is get the pick mattock just start grubbing the upside of the fire ring and probably either throwing some shovel fulls down there or put in the bucket which will probably probably the way way to do it and it got a pretty good system down with the hand tools we've been using so to break up the ground and to get around rocks I've just been using a pick mattock I picked up at the big box store it's two and a half pound head I opted for that as opposed to the 5 pound head because I don't do a lot of manual labor anymore like I used to and I can control and handle that two and a half pound head longer than you know something twice as heavy but once I once I break up the ground with the pick mattock and I move on to the metal rake and get all the loose dirt into a pile and then just take that spade shovel throw in the bucket and then dump it on the down side of the hill and it's a pretty good system and all things considering you can move a decent amount of a decent amount of Earth with just hand tools now it would go a lot faster if we had a crew out here with us but nonetheless it's still still a pretty good system I think we've probably been working for the last at least two hours I'm not sure the lights going down probably a couple more hours of daylight and I'm tired I'm not used to doing manual labor like this using hand tools but I miss it I really do miss the therapeutic nature of half mindless work and you know body can just do it it needs to and the mine doesn't have to think too much but we made really good progress today I'm really happy I really am we're definitely not going to get this finished today I'm going to do is definitely some more leveling some more dirt and moving the firings not going to get put back up to that's fine so we'll be back up well I think that's probably gonna be it for today in the terms of moving dirt really happy with what we got at the stopping point today we're almost almost that level top side snow come to bring some dirt down to the to the bottom side of the hill that's okay it's starting to look like a space now to find space under these trees is what were what we're going for so I think all there's left to do is just the backfill I'm just going to take the tamper and just help it along a little bit and just start of compact that soil just a little bit well that concludes this episode just kidding I'm tired I'm hungry feel accomplished I really do so what's gonna happen now is that we're done for today we're gonna bring a couple extra tools up next time some like route cutters just little hand clippers take care of some of the roots over here and prod you the final leveling and then after that not sure so what do you think we should do once we get this level won't have a fire pit but is there anything else we should do let us know leave a comment and did you like this video
