hey wassup Turtles it's Crick here with black out outdoors and today I'm going to be doing a video on modding amaura to be able to throw sparks from a feral rod and basically what that involves is squaring off the spine to give a sharp 90 degrees to be able to take material off of the feral rod if you follow me over to this dead tree I'm going to get started and show you what you need and how to accomplish this simple yet effective mod

this is the knife I'm going to be using for today's video it is the more a companion I did a review on this a very long time ago it's a really great knife pretty cheap but like most Moors with the exclusion of the bushcraft black and I believe to light my fire the spine is not squared to be able to throw sparks from a Ferro rod and what that means is have a Ferro rod in my hand

and as it stands now to use the back of the knife a spine to try to throw sparks with this in here it's just chewing up my Ferro rod no sparks nothing so to be able to get this to be able to throw sparks what I'm going to need is a couple files or one file depending what you have now this is really easy to do even easy to do if you're at home if you have a vise to get all this in but because we're blackout we do everything outside I'm going to be doing this outside presents a few challenges but nonetheless still very possible so you need your knife knife of choice this is not having coding this is a carbon steel blade and a bastard file and I have a couple with me a couple bastard files with me today I have one here inside this wrap I have another and you can hopefully you can pick that up and see the one in my right hand that my fingers touching is a coarser file and that's what I'm going to be using to do this mod as opposed to this much much smoother file we using the coarser one get the knife pretty a good comfortable working height I'm doing this in a dead tree don't want to put this in a live trees no need to is plenty of dead trees out here now once I think I got the knife pretty the spine parallel to the ground or at least pretty good to where I can get parallel with it position myself get my file on here and I'm probably only going to do maybe an inch and a half on here don't it doesn't need to be the whole way just down here I'm going to do that I'm going to go to work on it and try to get this to where I can throw Sparks and let it tender bundle and the key to this key to this key to this is trying to keep this file parallel and even with the spine of this to be able to get this nice 90 degrees coming up off here the blade and there's definitely an audible sound change once you know you're taking off material from the knife you can hear it when the files starting to actually dig in and grind into the metal take it out and do a test run all right well I'm getting some sparks but it's not as as much of a showers I'd like there's a few reasons for that one I'm making this really harder on myself and using this old beat-up chewed up sort of practice testing Faro that I've let people try you want to use this for the first time you can see all that sort of ribboning and wave formed in there I'm making it a lot harder for myself it isn't smooth contact but that's not the biggest issue what I think I'm going to do let's put this back in here and maybe take the file and hit it this way and try to get square this off a little bit more as opposed to just from the top so I'm gonna go back to this way you get another try

try to find a sweet spot on this feral rod

there we go much better I'm getting a getting a deeper bite in the rod just by turning the knife

I was hitting on the top side here flipping it this way taking the file over here you get that little bit of to get that really 90 degrees pronounced and that's basically yours to it you see it's throwing good sparks now I'll throw a couple more I do have a little bit of bark in my pocket that I've been trying to dry with some body warmth and I'm going to try to get just a show and try to get just catch us on fire all right so I got the knife squared off to where I like it I'm getting a really nice bite in the rod and now I just want to actually try to transfer this and see if actually I can get some dry tinder lit or dry tinder lit in these white conditions so what I've used is I found some of this shreddy bark I believe it's tulip poplar just because of the characteristics and you can see the fibrous nature of this bark on a dead tree as it dies and you can see this as the darker color meaning this is wet so what I've done is actually took decent amount of this and put this back got a little ball in my pocket underneath my jacket and the layer that's closer to my body heat have a bundle right here that I sort of broke up a little bit and dry it off definitely I'm definitely dryer and because I see if this is going to take some sparks and this is like part of just practicing testing your skills and conditions that aren't favorable there's snow on the ground right now but it's right at that temperature where things are starting to melt but there's a lot of moisture released in the air so it's kind of cold damp things are wet and this has probably been in my pocket I'd say for a solid 25 minutes break it up put in my pocket a little bit more work on it I can still feel a little bit of dampness in here but we're going to give it a go anyhow I don't want to put this on the ground because it's going to soak up moisture right away so I'm just going to put in the crux of this tree just to demonstrate see if it goes gonna set on this rock I know it's wet Oh what have you found something a job oh price spent a little bit more time doing this I'm not gonna have a lot of time once it hits this rock it's gonna pick up moisture but it's right try a shower

thinking this is still just a little bit too wet

getting good sparks working in there getting overheated now isn't taking it but I think I need to do is just spend a little bit more time with this try it out a little bit more break it up a little bit more I know this bark works I've used it before like I said this was soaking wet when I pretty much put it in my pocket

spend more time with it be patient I'm pretty convinced that will anyways that's the mod to the more really easy all you need is a file need your knife any questions have you done this before let me know any any tips any little tricks you got then you know make a really nice square doll spine any of that good stuff just wiping off some of the remnants of the sparks on there I'll clean this up when I get back to my house I hope the video was helpful like I said really easy to do nice piece of kit to have your knife squared off in the spine now you don't need it check us out black outdoors comm check out our Facebook or Instagram all the content we're putting online this is correct signing out with black our doors later Turtles
