hey what's up Turtles its Creek here with black outdoors and today Estonian are just gonna be chronicling and just giving some background show you how we set up camp get ready for the day to be out here in the winter and shoot some videos and just kick it in general so to start off the first thing I do wintertime is I'm gonna get my ground tarp down get my will blanket get into my bag and figure out the day from there it's pretty cold out here right now probably four inches of snow on the ground roughly the lows last night out here definitely single digits probably even potentially down to zero it's warmed up today the sun's really warm so I'm going to set my tarp up in this little bit of Sun patch that I have here because like there's a lot of heat you can really feel the warmth from the Sun right now so I'm getting my bag get my tarp out

all right now I got my little chill spot set up I'm actually using this new wool blanket I found at a local thrift store it's $2 100% wool old military edition just clearing out the firing a little bit right now get a little bit of snow out of there gonna go look for some resources now to get this fire going this is a really great resource specifically where we are in this mountain valley there's a lot of hemlocks and the end of hemlocks and conifers in general make a really great I guess twig bundle to get fires going this method I really use down here don't let the baton and he would don't have to do any cutting just get a really nice handful of small twigs down here at the basis is a little thick I wouldn't want my whole bundle to be this thickness definitely a little bit thinner than a pencil but at this end here this thinner stuff will work really well I'll process us a little bit more when I get next to the fire but just going through this scavenging picking out the stuff I need this is a good start to get my fire going I'm definitely gonna need more fire within this and I'll probably make another trip but this is everything I need right now to get the fire going and keep it burning for a long enough to get some more firewood let's head back to the fire ring and because the grounds wet right now or there's snow on the ground I'm going to put a little bit of a platform base layer of dry wood to keep my initial fire off of this to get it get some coals burning in and by using the dead wood the coals I do produce from the fire as its off the ground it's going to produce and already have you know are ready to be made coal based putting this wood down first it's important step in this and winter and or wet environment I got my base started I'm not really planning to have a huge fire today just something to keep us warm not having a bonfire a little bit of heat will go a long way out here so I don't need to make this really big I'm happy with that and now I'm just going to get some tinder go back to my pack get my kit get all my fire starting stuff and proceed from there you've probably or potentially you've seen this piece of ShamWow material I've had in a lot of my bags a lot of kits I've gone over this haven't really touched on it too much just mentioned it but today I'm going to use it actually to get the fire going with my Ferro rod cut a little square off break all these fibers up I could spend some time looking for some natural tinder but there's no need to got stuff in my kit that'll work don't want to spend the time the day to do it once I see the flames start looking through the top of my twig bundle started adding some bigger stuff as you can see though it was really simple to get this fire going didn't need to pull my knife out to cut anything to need a process really anything down I do have to go now look for a little bit of firewood but I know it's closed so I didn't have to bring everything back with me right now I'm happy with the way this fire is going it's burning well I know it will be sustained sonís grab some more firewood now this fire I got going pretty quick I really did spend too much time making a pretty making a neat buy but awning really nice pieces of wood down to get really nice angular pieces of firewood because I just wanted to get a fire going quick once some warmth and this is just you know really fast way to get a fire going what I'm burning right now is this hemlock it's really not the best for firewood I could walk up the valley a little bit right out of this this valley bottom and look for some hardwoods but not gonna spend the time to do it today like I said we're not gonna be out here all day or all nights where my fire gathering would be different but as a warming fire goes I'm happy with this if you want to come around you can actually look to the back you can see this darker color here it's the snow melting and it's the charcoal underneath it that's giving it this darkened look and if I didn't have or didn't put down that layer of dry wood this fire would not be going the way it is now because you could see all of the snow would have been just sucked up that moisture would've been sucked up right to the fire and it would have definitely severely hampered this fires burning potential I wanted to point out something today that I've noticed is that this stream behind me is a springfed stream and it runs year-round even though it's cold in the winter you can see the snow all over this really does never freeze over completely and I know it got really cold these past few nights because there's a really good amount of ice that has formed on top of the water just something I noticed something I can see the changes because I come out to this particular Valley a lot in this spot a lot I can see the changes I know how the forest you know sort of reacts to the temperature inappropriate and that's because I come out here so often and see the changes there's something really special and it looks really pretty I just wanted to share that with you I'm gonna throw some more wood on this fire keep tending to it get it buttoned up to where I want it and then just get ready to shoot some videos for the day for y'all

so that's pretty much our routine on days like this where we're going to come out to hang next to a fire and or shoot videos come to camp get my tarp down get my blanket out get a fire going and then assess and plan the rest of the day we're going to shoot some other videos now this is Creek signing out with black outdoors later Turtles
