hey what's up Turtles Kirk here going to be sharing another one of my tinkering DIY projects that I'm pretty happy with honestly and it's this archery armed guard and if you're not really familiar I will put it on it but it's meant to cover your arm so we're going to shooting your bow that if you have incorrect form the string doesn't hit your arm it's going to hit this leather and I never use this I haven't really been shooting my bow that much since I bought it for a lot of reasons but I decided when I first got my bow that I wasn't going to use or wear one of these because if you are hitting your arm it's because of incorrect form so I felt like a fight incorrect form I wanted it to hurt and force me force me to get better you see I didn't dye the underside right here because if I'm going to be wearing it potentially if it's warm or I'm sweating I just didn't want have to worry about any of the dye coming off on my skin my arm and you don't see the side of it anyway so I felt like it was a win-win getting back to the main side now is I'm not a huge fan of really decorated and ordinate gear in general so I try to keep this simple you can see I put some a little bit of designs in there just really simple but what I try to do with the die and I use the water stain you have to sustain water stain from the professional from tandy is I try to give a texture in the color and that's where I like the character from my leather to be is in the texture and not through like really ornate designs but through the dye and texture and I've just experimented with this on here I think it turned out okay I'm not completely completely satisfied with it but on the next time I make something where I try this technique I think it'll turn out a little bit closer to where I wanted to this is thick this is probably eight ounce leather maybe seven seven eight ounce veg tan leather and the straps are a thinner I believe this is probably four to five ounce and what I did is I use actually the five beings fiebing's

alcohol die for the straps but I didn't really put on a super consistent coat because I wanted some texture and maybe you could see it maybe you can't there is a little bit of difference in there might have trouble in this one specifically but also what I did with this is I put oil dit as well and what that does if you remember I've talked about oil tan leather in previous videos is that when I stress this or stress it it gets lighter than it was you see that I pinched it it's getting lighter not just that solid might be solid to you but it is getting lighter and then when it goes back to its resting state it looks dark again and I really like that feature I really do I've been playing around a lot with oils and waxes and stuff like that for the leather you can see there are blemishes right here or imperfections on the hide because this is a cowhide this is literally the skin flesh of of an animal so you can see these imperfections and I didn't cut this off I didn't throw it away because it's still more than useful and yeah if I was selling making something to sell I probably obviously wouldn't use that piece of the leather but for my personal needs and use I want to respect that animal as much as I can and use as much as the height as I possibly can and what that means sometimes that it takes me a lot longer to cut some out or plan something out and hide because I'm not just doing what's quick and easy that it will take me a lot longer to put a pattern on a hide or use as much as I can but I really think that's important and something I definitely want when it wanted to mention this is what it starts you know this is what it looks like when I start a project it's a pale piece of vegetable and and you can see this is a scrap that I use if I'm punching holes with my awl you get a couple thicknesses on the table so I don't go into my cutting mat but this is what it looks like you know all veg tan leather more or less is going to be this color it's going to be really pale really unattractive unfinished undyed unoiled and then through different processes you know you're able to do a lot of different stuff look wise with vets tan leather and with leather it is just as much of an art and allowing your creative side to shine as it is a functional piece of equipment I want to get it on now and talk to me a little bit more a little bit more about leather and projects put it on a found drill easy or the easiest way I found is just buckle the top one oh yeah since we're here on the buckles these are roller buckles and you can see here jingling around this or there's a tube right here and what that does it's just easier to pull the strap through and it kind of saves the life of the strap because there's really no friction it's just hitting this piece and just rolling as opposed to running over a fixed piece of metal or steel but anyways I do do the biggest strap and slide it on and I made these straps excuse me I made them short so that when I did tighten them I don't have a lot of I don't have a really long tag tag hanging off of them roll it on the inside of my arm because if I'm holding the bow like such drawing back pulling back if my form is incorrect it's going to hit usually right around here you know and it will leave a huge mark when that bowstring hits your arm obviously it's going to leave a welt a big black and blue mark in a well but I haven't had that happen since the first couple times I was using my bow but since I work with leather and I always want a reason to to make something I thought why not make one of these and on a side note there's gonna be part of my Ren Faire costume like I said when Fair costume loosen that up one more put on the top my arm I'm like BAM Little John I do have a walking stick with me today too it's really the reasons why I like showing you the projects I've made at home and I have we have yet to bring you along showing you the ins and outs and my creative process and the techniques I use to make leather and other goods but the reason I'm showing you this is they potentially give you ideas maybe inspire you to get into making your own equipment or gear to on whatever level you feel was comfortable or you could afford because when I started making leather I watched a bunch of videos and I just kind of jumped into it I didn't really have anyone to bounce ideas off of I didn't you know which I thought I believe what helped me figure out things sooner or potentially grown faster in my skill and ideas so if you are starting getting into leather and I know there's people that have contacted me some of our viewers have sent me emails asking me questions that's what's great I would love I love sharing the knowledge I have I have gained and experiences so that's why I'm showing you these projects so that if you have any questions or potentially can give you ideas for for stuff that you're making or just inspire you to get out new stuff you made that's why I
