Overdue Overnight: Hammock Camping in an Autumn Forest

Description

Krik and stony hike into the beautiful golden forests of the Pennsylvania mountains for a day of exploring and a night of restful sleep hammock camping. Ideally they would have spent more than just one night under the stars, but one night in the autumn forest is better than none.

Special thanks to Wrangler for sponsoring the trip & providing the clothing to keep Krik & stony comfortable.

what a gorgeous gorgeous fall day here in Pennsylvania you know I've lived all over this country and there's still something about Pennsylvania it gets me excited to come into the woods during the fall it really is my favorite favorite time of the year the weather it's a low humidity it's just the leaves changing there's just an energy that Christmas of the crisp crispiness of the air I'm excited to be out here on this trip and like I said I get so excited just that I'm able to share the beauty of my home state with you I don't know maybe the temperature is 55 degrees Fahrenheit right now slight breeze not too many clouds clouds in the sky just a quintessential

fall day here in Pennsylvania [Music]

some of you probably know what this is we've actually done a video identifying this plant and what's really cool about the T berry or wintergreen North Area procumbens is that the fruit persist all winter and they are edible word of caution before you put anything in your mouth or eat anything in the forest always make sure you're a hundred percent but when you break the leaves on this it has that wintergreen smell and let me grab one there's a tons of them around so I don't not gonna feel bad just plucking one leaf from a plant mmm it's so crazy such a distinct smell well I think this is as good a spot as any we're just gonna take a small break I've been walking all morning it's not quite lunchtime but I may get a few snacks and I just sit here enjoy the stream for a little bit and we'll probably meet back up - last time [Music]

this is such a cool tree it's American beech leaves are changing but just what caught my eye was I guess at one point there's two trees growing side-by-side or came out of the same maybe stump of an older one but they're sort of just laying next to each other and growing into each other at certain points and it's it's just really really cool

[Music]

hmm what is that is that an old coupe for chickenhawks yeah I really don't know I'm kind of stumped hardware doesn't look that old but how many guesses

[Music]

well initially I said might stop and have some lunch but at this point time in the day it's getting close to 2 o'clock 1400 and I think we're just going to look for a place now to set up camp

just I want to make sure there's enough light we can get there set up camp get something to eat so sometime maybe to wander around and enjoy enjoy the forest this is as good a spot as any to camp the biggest thing in these will Vince for us and the thing I'm looking for that's gonna make a decent camp spot to get our hammock set up our hazard trees I'm looking sort of eye level to see if I can see any obvious signs that a big trees dead bark missing you know wood pecker insect holes I'm also looking up in the canopy to see if there's any Widow makers in the tops of trees and that is a Widowmaker is a dead branch that's detached from the tree maybe just hanging on a branch still you know sort of teetering above you so I want to avoid sleeping underneath a dead tree and I'd attached a big branch and that's really hard to do for how thick these forests are but I think the spot for at right now is the best we're going to get I don't want to keep searching wandering we're gonna get our camps up as fast as we can

sleeping quarters all buttoned up I'm gonna sit down and have a cup of coffee [Music]

I didn't bring any steaks with me for my tarp I sort of forgot them and I don't know where they are but also this gives me excuse to use a knife and while this wood doesn't really look like you know it might not be sturdy wood but as I'm carving into it you can see you can hear it's plenty strong enough wood it's not rotten it's not going to break apart in the ground

as you can see my brother and I are sleeping in our hammocks tonight and that's really a good choice I feel like for these Pennsylvania woods because it's really hard to find something relatively flat without a bunch of rocks it's kind of cool swinging in a hammock I really enjoy the type of sleep I get when I'm in a hammock if you remember the stream from earlier that's now down the mountain down this valley or into the hollow holler holla we tried to come up a little bit because the coldest air is gonna sink to the bottom of this it's gonna be you know sensitive just the coldest part is the bottom of this valley so he came up a little bit for a couple reasons one was try to avoid that really cold sink and - there's a lot of old growth and dead snags or snags that are old-growth trees and up here the trees are a little bit smaller and almost feels like it's a little bit easier to get away from all the giant hazard trees but at this point I think we got camp set up we're gonna pry to sit down and enjoy ourselves a couple hours - it's pretty dark in here so probably get supper at some point after that but right now it's just take some deep breaths look around and enjoy where we are

[Music]

instead of carrying a French press with us in the woods which you've seen videos before I want to try instant coffee the one we have is from a local roaster another ones you know bought in a grocery store and I just want to see if the coffee is still good without you know bringing grounds grinds with us huh oh I think I personally had the better coffee we're gonna cool down on my cup but we're gonna move on it's throwing some coffee

[Music]

important tip for on camp you might want to eat away from camp do your cooking we're gonna take that chance there now we're definitely gonna take all our food and our smell good items away from us and hang it up probably tonight but I'm just gonna stay diligent in any trash I make as soon as I make it I want to get it in the bag yeah at this point it's my last layer I want to get on it's definitely getting chillier all right we're gonna do a little taste test but before that I want to ask your opinion for those of you that enjoy coffee and having it outdoors when you backpack how do you like making your coffee instant is definitely the easiest but I'm curious this is the local local roaster we got this from that's really good that's really good I don't know if I could even tell the difference right now to say that wasn't French press coffee out here just what the doctor ordered right now you go swig of water try to stay is non-biased objective as we can I am a social scientist all right now this is grocery store international company still not bad definitely Stephanie not bad you know what I could be content with just I think anything right now so I mean that's all we need though yeah that's all we need is something for a warm drink you know not even picking just something wrong

[Music]

well the Sun is pretty much setting in this valley really good time to get some supper on

[Music]

and I'm using dehydrated vegetables today so I have them in the water right now warming I want to add some seasoning to that now no packet I put together can have garlic powder in here some cayenne some fresh black pepper that's it [Music]

we're just putting some of my some of my cord away and I noticed one of my zipper tracks busted on us on the side pocket nothing I'm gonna worry about right now or even probably try to repair on this trip in the morning or anything like that but it's getting dark so I think we're just gonna call this a night with the camera unless anything happens or we feel like sharing something we'll probably just I just meet up in the morning really excited to crawl in through the hammock and get a good night's rest feeling exposed Allenwood

[Music]

good morning

no pretty shots of us waking up crawling right out of our hammocks skip straight forward to coffee time everything tastes different with the addition of the wood this coffee would taste different if I was drinking a ceramic cup it always has that hint of wood in the sip which I enjoy

it wasn't ridiculously cold last night my guess was upper 30s at the coldest that's degrees Fahrenheit wind was there all night

it filled on my face so I felt like I was a little like a nesting doll wrapped inside the wrapped inside everything I think the plan for today is drink our coffee bright is hanging around camp just a little bit you know sort of taken taking the last bit of that's bit of our time here break down camp and hike out the camps all packed up making her way out right now just out for a single night hey you can probably see that maybe down there it's a native trout stream I really hope you enjoyed what you saw if you did let us know and if you want to see more of this type of video let us know again see you soon later Turtles
