hey what's up Turtles its Creek here with blackout outdoors today I want to do a video on showing how to make a tent stake out of a piece of wood that can be found anywhere in the forest and I want to show a sort of style like this that I have already had made here which has a little bit of a point down here that I've taken off some wood and I and I have this key up here which I really like and it sort of acts as like sort of not a fail-safe device but if wind comes and it's gonna be pulling your guylines up this will stop it from potentially coming off your stakes you can put a little notch in here but I thought just like this I like the style like the way it looks it gives me a little bit of you know more reassurance when I'm you know going out and really making my camp to my tarp my my tent foolproof and I'm going to look for one on the ground real quick try to find something I can make a steak like this out of it might take a little bit longer since I'm looking for a specific you know a steak that's long enough

and has this V in it it's actually there's one right behind concerning what I see right here on this branch is I'm gonna use this part right here that's right well I'm gonna have this well this one be my steak that's going to the ground and this is gonna be so much sort of failsafe II I'm gonna do this without a saw probably make it easier if you can you just saw but you don't need to sort of roughly what its gonna look like like so good and to start this I want to take this down a little bit this is the top of the steak don't eat all that with a saw you could go right through this but with a knife you can use this sort of technique of going around it multiple times from different directions get one pass like that turn around and work into it your cons is making a V in that the whole way around and when you're choosing a piece of wood for your steak you want to make sure you can find wood that's on the ground but you want to make sure that it's not rotten that's gonna be a strong piece of wood for you this all depends where you are what your force look like situation all that break that off do the same thing for here little awkward of a position try keep my fingers away from the path of the night in case it slips this way I don't want to put my I do not want to hold it like this it might be a little more comfortable to hold my hand Tenshi if I slip hit my fingers I want to keep all my hands farts my hands my finger away from be are behind the cut like I said you can use a salt for this a nice little 14 salt would work well like a one that's on my winger but I just want to demonstrate that you can do these can process wood down without a saw it takes a little bit longer that's alright

I like the Whittle I like using knives that's pretty much good for what's gonna be now here and I'll just try to take off this not yeah yeah I'll do it again trying to go through all that instead of trying to whittle this into a point all this kind of you know this this uh node or whatever from branch I'm just gonna take that off the way I did now this would be much easier to whittle into a point I'm gonna start a little bit higher up to help give it less friction when it's going through the ground take off some of the Bart deuce the friction and drag as it's going into the substrate you're choosing wherever you are camping you want to make sure you don't just make it a really super thin point we're going too much out he only started still has a little bit of a girth and diameter to it doesn't need to be you know the sharpest tip point just enough to penetrate the ground you can see this way I have it now just bring these humps down a little bit up here to something a little bit smoother into the ground it doesn't have to you know win any beauty contests what's this going into the ground make sure it's effective that's going to do its job but doesn't have to be the prettiest and that's pretty good it's taking a little bit more bark off this is pretty long as the stake you got really

you know loose ground legs cramping up might once you know potentially something a little bit shorter a little longer but at this point also gives me a nice little handle to help work it into it into the ground I'll just go here and through my experience of putting in stakes if you're gonna use you know thinner stakes you can bend them but what really helps is the get a good you know grip on it or if a rock and really engage your core so that you're not just so your whole weight is sort of balanced and it's going in with it and not just bending it and at that point you know I can put my put my piece of cordage over here demonstrative purposes this is just my neck knife to my ridgeline then would go here and like I was mentioning before if the wind's coming in my tarp shaking or crazy I have this V notch here that won't allow this to slip off the stake that at least keep my in my tent or my tarp attached to the state basically it's basically it just Creek signing out with blak outdoors later Turtles
