right now I'm using this is some type of willow I know which you know which willow the families of willows but usually I like to use maple or birch and they go well this wood is a little bit too soft and you have to be very careful I mean it carves fairly well but it's a little too sensitive but that's all I had in the house oh no so far that's what I have I'm not making any special design really I'm not forcing it to go anywhere I'm just just doing and I'll see how it comes out at the end that's what's fun about it when you carve of course you know the key to carving is always you know safety and most of all patience you know don't be in a rush take your time and should come out with something decent

so today is a day of cabin fever yep now there's two different ways of seeing with cabin fever is back in the day cabin fever was because you can get out the cabin you know because of the difficult winters well my other take of cabin fever nowadays we can still go out but the problem is going in the woods and what I mean by that I can't wait for this white stuff to mill I've had quite enough of it so as you can see we're at the sanding stage a little tip trying to get as much as you can off with your knives or whatever you're using save time on sanding so this can be can become long now what I use the sand is 80 grit and 180 that's it it's good enough for me so these patient and to send it all nice and smooth so my sanding is done 8180 that's good enough for me this wood this is as I mentioned before it's a willow that's all I had not the greatest wood to carve in the sense that if you want to make something very decent I truly do not suggest this wood if it's just for a fast spoon no problem but see the problem is it's got its full of holes now usually when I got holes or imperfections I can take my knife and just you know go a little bit exterior or both sides of it and take off enough so the hole disappeared then it's easy to sad and even sometimes I could just I just send it off and it's gone but these I noticed more ice and the more holes appear it's probably a good wood for insects and stuff like that I don't know it's my guess let me show you what I mean this is what the spoon looks like hey I know what there's kind of white there but anyway let me show you what I mean see here the holes now I can't get rid of those and sometimes that even by sanding other holes appear oops even the back here this nice big one it's too deep to sand off because I'm gonna go too far still gonna leave it there it's not a big deal but you know tiny holes like this one here - yeah here now believe it or not I took my knife I took a nice piece off it didn't look deep and sanded it down and look started to start to look nice awesome poof good appear to get in something anyway if you want to do something a very your perfectionist and I'm gonna do something nice and something that will last a little longer ice I strongly suggest maple or birch those are my two uh my two first ones but I would use so now let's send it down what's the next step well I'm going to give you a little tip here that took me a while to figure out anyway it's just my my take on this you know if you want a spoon to be comfortable in the mouth of course if you want to make a test after you've scented like this don't boil it right away go up you know under whether you have water maybe you know not hot hot water but lukewarm just rinse it off a little bit and with your fingers go around it and you're gonna see that straw we're gonna come it's gonna be all rough and not smooth again now tell you what's happening here again this is what I think is happening you're in between two layers of wood right so that's why it's it's still rough so what should you you'd let it dry and you take your you know 180 or 220 and he just gently send it where it's rough everywhere on the spoon not too much and you do that that you go back to your water again gently wash it and you know continue the process if there's other places that's a little rough oh it because you don't want to send too much because then you're going between the other two layers and it's you know so that's what we're gonna do next after all that's okay you know once you've put it in the water and it's still all nice and smooth that means you're you're fine then you can play with it an oil it so let's do that right away water just wanna he's doing so good just a little bit I'm gonna try it when you put water on it it'll give you a little bit of a no idea what it's going to look like when you aisle it so and feel at the top here the bowl is the most important of course would I do it all

okay there's still a bit here so let this dry a bit take your 220 or 180 sent it off gently put in the water again until you're satisfied then let dry completely before you continue playing with it so now that it's dried I can feel even more where I need to Sano bit and I can actually see it and all of you I'm gonna be able to see this city here what's coming out like little hairs anyway what you do is everywhere where you see it just give it a very light scent not more than that too bad it's how it has so many goals it's gonna be a nice little school right here right now I'm using 180 buddies 220 is fine news that's all you got nice and smooth again it's what you want

see the handle need some you do this once it's all nice and soft again you repeat the process yo add a little bit of water and you know you continue doing that until it's all nice and soft after it's been wet and without resetting then you're all set you don't need to do this of course but it's just a better feeling in the mouth when you're eating the soup or anything that's almost you know most foods will be you'll have moisture in it so all right so now that you're satisfied of course I'm not satisfied with these holes but I'll be fine if you want you could put a little design remember these old little burrs I think we all have this as a kid and I works fine

you know you'll need to do this but I just like having fun and of course I'm far from being an artist I mean I can't even draw a good silhouette of a mountain so I'll just do a little something here

and with the pencil just to give you a we usually just do a few branches or something that's all I can do so like this that this and like that of course when you do these things you want to keep you know your bowl you don't wanna do want to do this on your bowl cuz it goes here you want to keep this smooth and nice so I'll just go in the middle like this real fast and what am I gonna do here okay well there just go like that very simple ugly just go down this side here go down on that side I'm just gonna keep it simple that's all I know is simple anyway haha okay so this thing should be hot enough alright so

there's one mistake of course the lines are just a guide there doesn't mean you'll be following them

so let me continue this and once it's almost complete I'll just show you real fast

okay that's good enough that's what I usually do is just fool around so after that yeah I probably went on my markings anyway but

anyway well come on for this end so just crazy lines like this right come on focus in you hold on a just normal little lines so you know you should speak lines just make it unique make it for yourself all right so now next let me put you again forward because this creates obviously it's not soft anymore because you're dug into the wood use your 220 again and send it up till you don't feel it anymore

gonna make it it won't make it look like stick out as much so I finished sending it like I wanted now it's time to protect it what I use is mineral oil there's a lot of people that are against that because you know I think they say that you should be using food-related oils like you know your peanut oil and your olive oil and all that stuff and you know they may be right but those oils will sometimes turn rancid on you mineral oil will not and it's the only safe oil right that will actually do a great job keeping moisture out of the wood now I'm talking about mineral oil you know you by your local drugstore or pharmacy it's actually used as a laxative you know so it can be ingested I mean you can take it without killing you or hurting you and of course the amount that you put in here on the spoon will not give you the runs anyway I've been using this for that's all I've been using anyway I've never had any problems and it really keeps my would product products safe so what I do is I just put on my hands because also acts as a lotion I just the first when you got a first spoon like that it takes a lot more you can see the color is already coming out yeah

so bad for those holes could have been a nice spoon so what you do when it's you know your first spoon like that of course you want to go with like coats once it's after you see in a draw you're gonna see some other spots you just add to it and you know I I use them like every week and I won't put oil every week I'll put some you know when I start seeing it's becoming dry once in a while so a bottle like this will last you forever so with the oil see how it takes all the now the bird part seems like it's sticking out but it's not it's actually very smooth on the piece of wood make some colors come out there narrator the wood so anyway there you go let me show you my other schools that I have this one I made for Josie once upon a time she used it a lot you've seen it in the videos this one's made out of birch you see the color is a little bit stronger this is my usual this is my usual pretty much spoon that I make it's you know different it could be a little bit a little bit bigger this is a longer one I made for her to see almost always the same designs tried to make some feathers but anyway yeah this wouldn't you see it often she takes care of the food this one's made out of maple my favorite as you can see it's you know a lot darker this is one that I made fir for a special kit again it's made out of maple this one fits perfect and her little kit she doesn't use this one much she's saving it I guess and all and the one you always see my videos mine not the prettiest but it needs a little bit of oil too now this one I got from nice piece of maple but it was really seasoned and it was already dark see it Annie I tried to attempt to make an arrow there I guess I screwed up there but anyway this is the one that you always see in my vids I just love this spoon anyway these are fun projects of course if you're interested in knowing a little bit more you know what tools and all that stuff well you just you just go in my website you know if you're interested and go in the carving section and give you a little bit more I guess details about the the tools and and I also have another video so alright so this was actually a lot of fun my cabin fever is gone the fever is actually done whoo that feels good if you've never tried this before I suggest you try it's it's a lot of fun and rewarding thanks for watching
