hello everyone this is mike from bushcraft Barton's my good friend Tom decided that he'd give me some work to do thank you very much brother Tom I'm just kidding be a pleasure for me to do this char cloth now believe it or not when you got a good recipe about anything it always works better you can have the best Flint you can have the best striker but if your char cloth is not what it's supposed to be you're going to still have a hard time so I'm just going to show you a few tips you know if its first time you guys do this of how you can make char cloth that will be effective now for you guys that I've never done this what you're going to need is tin can it doesn't really matter the size it alls you know it just depends on the quantity you want to make I got this old cookie can important to have a cover and you make a small hole on the top here of your cover for the smoke to come out a chimney stack clean it up now you can use a fire obviously put this on top of a fire but today I'm just going to use a alcohol stove now something that's very important is the cotton you're going to use obviously you're going to need one hundred percent cotton you can use blue jeans you can use a t-shirt as long as it's a hundred percent caught in a cotton I mean jeans is you know thicker so the only difference between genes good pair of jeans and a t-shirt is that you know the jeans will burn but the process is the same now what I look for and cotton the t-shirt I check and see if it's nice and stretchy like this well to me the more stretches it's just the thinker's just thickness alright so I'm used to these t-shirts I know this works great but keep in mind is going to be a hundred percent cotton and again I mean you don't need to cut them in pieces like this just so it fits better in my can so I'm going to like this guy up and continue explaining what's next okay one more thing before I like this guy up and place your your cotton you know you don't want to make too much of a big batch at once because it won't cook right it's just like cooking some meal here and you want to you know try and spread a little bit evenly so it cooks evenly now the batch I'm going to make is a normal batch i usually do and you just spread them a little bit everywhere nice and flat try and hurry up and bore you guys with this

100-percent cotton very important and believe it or not show you later even char cloth can be overcooked and you don't want to overcook it because you're going to have a little problem I mean it's still going to work but be a lot harder to catch I'll show you the texture and what you should look for once it's cooked see if it's right okay so you just want to spread them you know just evenly as much as you can cover odd so I'm going to light this guy up Oh be right back alright so this is what you want to see you when I see the smoke coming out that chimney hole and you keep an eye on that and as soon as that stops coming the smoke you just take that tin can out or off your fire keep an eye get it's very very important it comes you know because you're going to overcook it and it won't be as effective so as soon as this is done guys I'll be right back with all right at this point here now you really keep an eye on it still smoking just a little bit as soon as you stop seeing some smoke you take that can off the fire now why do we put in a closed can obviously we don't want to burn don't want to burn the caught inside we just want to char it so you see to me right now I got to take it off so I'll show you what it looks like it's ready all right guys lunch is ready it's cooked obviously that's black in there you won't see much but but what you want to look for your piece of char cloth has to be very smooth and soft and you can bend it and it doesn't bust now when it's overcooked it's going to be rough it won't be smooth and when you bend it make a test when you bend it it breaks now it doesn't mean it won't work but it's going to be a lot harder to catch a spark than this way make sure it's nice and smooth again Ben's easy and this guy's will catch a spark for you very easily another thing you want to look for can we bring you outside here sorry about the camera no if you're going to see this you want to check through it see if you see well through it like this if you see it see through it like that it's perfect now why is this important well holes are important like this because as soon as your spark hits the char cloth is going to need channels of oxygen to keep on burning so if you can make this like that you're going to be all set all right just going to give you a little example hurry up because my hands are freezing now a little tip when you're doing this if you try and do this or make a test make sure you put the cover on the rest of your char cloth I know this may sound insignificant but believe me I've done that before forgot the cover and the spark went in and I didn't notice it because char cloth when you don't blow on it doesn't smoke much and I ruined my whole batch right so I catch right away okay guys so I hope this was helpful for you guys and very easy you do it right we won't have any problems and you'll start chartwell very easily so all thanks again guys for watching thank you Tom for this request and I'm anxious for spring to get here this is just a little heads up you guys take care thanks for watching bye
