today we're going to take a look at the yaqoob knife made by Siberian forge 9 [Music]

alright folks so this is a pretty unique knife its traditional from natives in Siberia it's made and I should say I'm proud to say that it's made by anton who lives here in quebec canada and he makes them traditionally like they do in siberia now we don't really know the exact story of all this precise story of how it began but like most natives in whatever country you are in either canada Siberia or the states it probably started with boned you know to cut their meat and stuff something that would look like this

so as I was saying it probably started with a bone sharpen bone from you know part of an animal as you can see it comes with a different looking sheet it doesn't have a belt loop like your normal sheath would have it comes with this loop you can carry on the side of your belt or you can also carry as a neck knife it's okay this size to carry is a necktie now Anton makes you know all sizes but they're all traditionally made now I can make a smaller ones a bigger one thinner blade you know whatever you need he can do but how this works is that this side here ok now I can tighten it and this is not coming out okay and the weight of the blade will tighten this sheets at the side here so you don't lose your knife but still when you want to take it out it's easy to take out okay I'm just going to show you a little bit of the sheath nice traditional sheath he is a for Anton that's my guess nice thick leather it's got your drainage hole I like the sheath it's it's roughly made but nicely made I don't know how I can say it

it looks like I've had this knife for a while and I like this way to carry it anyway I'll put some links there and there's videos on how to carry it around your neck I like that style because it's like sideways it's got a little slant to it when you carry it instead of straight which makes it easier for you to grab your knife either you're left-handed or right-handed in my case I'm right-handed so I put it on this side like this around my neck automatically it would be easy for me to just grab it okay KooKoo like this okay so now we'll take a look at the knife itself I just love it it's beautifully made it it's made to last also there is you won't see it a wooden insert in there inside so when you do put in your knife you're sure not to go through your leather okay and it will probably help with the drainage too so let's take a look at the knife now you're going to see that it's different from other knives you've seen on my channel that's what's unique about siberian knives they are different let's talk about the handle first it's a burl maple and you've got moose antlers inserts and it's your typical oval and what I like about these handles is that they're always comfortable it doesn't matter what size hands you got they're always comfortable okay the natives were simple but knew how effective these handles could be now this is not the first time I see handles made like this okay you got the Tuco's or a made simillar some have the grooves but I rather know grooves at all I want one whole piece like this you're definitely won't have any hotspots some make it too oval and when it's too oval and you use the push cut too often it will tend to hurt here but this one is a nice thickness okay itay close to a five-inch handle and a four inch blade the steel is 50 to 100 high carbon steel that's a good old high carbon steel as you can see there is a fuller on this side I will talk a little bit about that in a second now how this knife is made you've got a convex side one side is convexed okay you've got nice polish and he left the hammer a hammer touch here or Forge which looks even more traditional and on the other side is completely flat okay so one side is convex the other side is flat the fuller obviously a fuller was more into your swords and stuff because it would stop the blood or not all but most of the blood from going to the handle so your handle wouldn't get slippery okay which could work with this but it wasn't really meant for that there are a few reasons why a fuller was made one of them is the main one its friction now imagine when you're cutting into stuff okay let's say what they were cutting into into their meat or whatever material that we're cutting into instead of having the whole side touch the material you just have these to the bottom and the top so for cutting purposes this would work great also this little fuller which is not it looks deep but it's not really deep okay it's just a little bit hammered in makes this blade a little bit more stronger it's like a little arc this way just think of a bridge and then make a bridge make it strong well this blade will be strong you know that way very strong blade also another reason for the fuller is for weight there's less weight in the blade now Anton is known to make floaters which basically your knife will float if you drop it in the lake or whatever reason it is you drop your water you're nice in it will float obviously it will not float with this type of handle because there's moose moose antlers but he can make a handle which will make the spoke which is pretty cool I really like the feel this blade so we've mentioned a few things friction which is the main thing okay concerning this fuller the weight of the blade and because how its made convex on this side and flat on that side it's known to carve very well because automatically will follow this convex angle here as you dig into the wood and your carving your stuff so carvers just love this type of blade so you know it's good for hunters and fishermen and it's an all-around good bushcraft knife what can I say and another important thing that I need to mention is you do not sharpen a yokota like a conventional knife now people may say because the bottom is thin here that it won't take too long that your edge will disappear and you'll end up in the fuller and it won't work anymore well it's false because you don't sharpen it that way you don't sharpen it like a conventional knife how you sharpen this let's say you have your strop or your stone whatever it is you use you need to lay your knife completely flat okay and you go this way okay not the other way this way making sure that the whole flat and here the top and the bottom touch your stone it's one of the easiest knives to sharpen on the market let me tell you it's simple anybody could do it so needs to go flat and you pull towards you or you don't push you pull always making sure it's flat so this way it's going to wear towards the fuller and you're always going to have the same height okay you're always going to have the same height it's going to go towards there and eventually it's going to go into the fuller but before that happens it's going to take a while so I'm just going to take a piece of wood and give you a little example of how this works so we're just going to take a very simple example let's say you want to carve in a notch now if you do your push cuts see how easy it goes in and around and because it has a flat edge here you just cut it off and you continue take your time very sharp this guy here is in the way it's very fun to use it's actually very simple

I just follows that convex so if you're into carving this thing goes in this piece of dry wood like butter okay the thickness of the blade is might go around maybe 5/32 about okay let's do a couple of push cuts like nothing goes well even though it it tends to you know want to curl like this it still takes pieces off fairly easy whenever I get a knife to review and it's the nice is difficult and I have to struggle just to get one little piece off this thing or whatever knife it is there's no good for me I don't want it doesn't matter if it's $1,000 worst knife if I can't slice easily into my piece of wood like this this one goes well a little bit see how they easily goes in yeah like it okay now I know a lot of you are going to be Wonder because in this bushcraft community if a knife doesn't feather stick well it doesn't seem like to be to be a good night well I would have a whole speech on that but maybe because this one is convex on one side and flat you know it tends to curl maybe it won't make any feather steaks so this is important to you we will try and do some other steaks with this see if it can still do well I'm having no problems making a few curls with this okay and curls real tight and tighten nice

I've got about five to six curls on this long of wood so that's a good sign right make them very tight and small too I'm not trying to make a nice round feather I'm trying to see how tight I can get them okay this is like very tight / I'm not in the Sun see that so yes it will do beautiful curls I'm liking this knife so far go through wood like butter all right so what do I think about this knife so far obviously I haven't used it all that time you know for weeks and months and all of that but I always have a I know that a lot of people say well having used a knife for a year you only can't really talk about it there's some truth in that but there's also some misleading when you've been around knives for quite a while you can you know pick out the goods and not so good but this what I like is its traditional I like traditional stuff I like all kinds of stuff but it's really traditionally made ok the leather sheath the materials usually is made from the place like in Siberia could get an old reindeer or whatever but because anton is from here the natives would make the handles from where he is so there's maple and Quebec we have I mean tons of maple and moose antlers we have tons of moose so I find that really nice the steel is a good steel a 50 to 100 good steel it's not a super steel and it's not made for that because back in the day they wanted to be able to sharpen this easy okay with super steel if you don't want that so it's soft enough to do it but not too soft to keep an edge or to not keep an edge I like the idea of the fuller this blade system also convex on one side and flat I like how it sharpens so easy I mean a ten-year-old can do it as long as you keep it flat and you go the right way you'll never you know go wrong with this I just wanted to show you also this is a pretty cool idea now you can have it on your belt now obviously I'd have it on my left side okay let's say my belt thing is up here I'd have it on my left side so I can grab it it's hanging there I can grab it this way well it's the same for a neck knife okay it's hanging straight for my neck but there's still a slant I love it but I love that about this knife so let's say it's like like this all I need to do is wait it's hanging on my neck I grab the sheath and pull it and it's easy to put back in because I can see with my eyes and it's sideways so you know that's what I like about it okay enough said about this knife what I'm going to do don't go away I'm going to put quite a few pictures not all of them but quite a few pictures of Anton's work on different designs different colors so stay tuned to watch that also his prices are very fair ok very fair like something like this would play about around 150 Canadian so for a nice traditional knife this is awesome so if you're from Europe or from wherever your money is a lot higher than ours this is a cheap knife to buy and I'm pretty sure that Anton ships pretty much around the world also I will put links to his Facebook and YouTube and all the links that he has concerning his knives make sure you take a look at it if you have any questions ask him don't ask me okay whatever I told you that's all I know about these so if you have more questions go ahead and he's an easy guy to talk to he's a friendly and he's awesome I had a great discussion with him concerning these I had to learn also you know what to be able to make this video and give you proper information and he did so anyway thank you for watching make sure you take a look at the link and don't go away I'll show you more pics of these [Music]
