so I'm still under the weather and it's raining outside so in this video we're gonna stay inside and talk about knives [Music]

so I've been asked a lot in the past years about you know budget starter knives like stuff under 100 bucks what would I recommend and all that good stuff just before we get into this video I understand that there are tons now of companies and good knives and good models under a hundred but I don't own all of them okay so I'm just gonna show you a few here that we'll take a look at in this video all right so for sure you've guessed it we have to include more knives now there's a big range of more knives and they're probably all good but again I'm showing you what I have here in this video this would be a knife or someone who is just starting who has never held a knife in his hand or has you know or doesn't even own one sometimes knives are passed on which he could use you know to start off but I'm talking about someone that has absolutely nothing and maybe it's something that you need or something you know or someone you know that would need one this is one that I would highly recommend to start with and it's the Mora 511 the classic now why this one well first of all Moore's are cheap to buy so it won't kill your budget second this blade here is not high alright it's got Scandi grind so it's a very easy knife to control okay control your cuts very nice beginners knife you got here the finger guard which is excellent for those beginning and I know that some come with stainless steel and others carbon now I would absolutely go with the carbon steel for two reasons first reason well the person that is going to start with a knife will have to know how to sharpen a knife and carbon steel is a lot easier to sharpen second one who's starting with a knife is going to have to know how to take care of his knife so this is a good example that if you let it go it's gonna rust and if he sees that he's not gonna like it so it's a good opportunity for you to show them how to take care of the knife so to begin I absolutely recommend this more classic in carbon steel so here's another Mora that's in about the same size as the 5-11 this is the pro s you know we're talking about four inch blades here give or take this one here as you can see has a higher okay high the height of the blade is is higher it's this one is stainless steel this could be another option from this one but this one would be much easier to use but if you're beginner person is a hunter I would go with this one just because it's got a nicer belly to it the height is better so when he takes care of his game or when he skins the height of the blade you know it gives you what's that word English English more precise cuts because you can see your blade better as you skinned your deer and of course its stainless okay so this is another great option depending on what your beginner it wants to get into and both these knives will do great in any small bushcraft app now if you want to upgrade from a more up this is another really popular knife that's very inexpensive excuse me which is the Condor bush lower it comes with say a nice well-made sheath and everyone knows about this bush floor it's very popular and I absolutely recommend it because it's a good knife it's got somewhat of a bush floor or would lure design not quite you know it's got I think it's 1075 it's a decent steel it's got nice wooden handles I can't recall what it is and some nice brass pins here it's a good size knife not too thick around 1/8 maybe but this would do pretty much all of it you know all your little bushcraft tasks and even hunting chores if you have to the blade is pretty high doesn't have much of a belly but still very doable strong tip it's got a spear type tip and it goes with the center of the blade so yeah this is something else that I would absolutely recommend to upgrade from the Mora if you can start with this one fine but I would still start with a Mora before I go to this one but this is another op if you want to upgrade a little bit from a condor there's a company called Perkins who make a decent knife a better steel and it looks a little bit better is a Perkins here let's take a look uh-huh excuse me so it's a nice nice decent sheath actually the sheath of a condor is better it's nice and thick but still the knife here to different people will would look better you'll soon find out Scott dangler so let's take it out of the sheath as you can see it's a bush tool their take on a bush tool you've got the butt plate here which is welded in I don't see any rivets on the side at canvas micarta you even have some mosaic pins the steel is o1 and I'd say about close to 3/16 thick so this is another you know $100 u.s. are a little lower I can't really tell you exactly that could be another option to upgrade depending where you are in your knife skills this one here

now when you pay a knife a hundred bucks or less obviously don't expect it to be perfect and if you're just starting you probably won't see these things anyway this knife is is a solid knife I mean you got you know micarta over and tools to you you can't really go wrong with that mmm nice thickness but for me personally there is a serious second dairy bevel on this thing okay now for most people that does not bother them but for me I would bring it to a truce candy but these are little things that are very fixable it's a beautiful knife and it's not too expensive so this could be a later option that's under 100 bucks made by Perkins here I'll give you some details if ever you're interested in these things there you go just pause it and made knives Oh Perkin sorry about that right now I'm gonna go on a complete different direction it's not everyone that likes scandi I mean it's very popular but it's not everyone that likes them others would maybe prefer something else like this and you soul you'll soon find out what it is they are very popular now this is not the normal sheath that it comes in that's a custom sheath but everybody knows about Jeff white guy I think this one is called the bush one he likes to make you know more traditional early trapper days knives and they're not expensive this may be something else for you

this is 1095 can't recall what the wood is but this is something else that you know you could consider depending your taste now this is a convex grind which is a very strong grind takes different skills to play around with this knife and also to sharpen it but it's still another good option and they're not expensive at all now something else that's very similar but maybe a little bit more higher in price now the guy's name is Mark I'm sorry I can't guide you to this maker by I'm pretty sure there's a lot of makers out there who could do this type of design for you for under a hundred bucks now this one is pretty pretty sweet actually and very interesting because you don't see this often

this is Kydex over leather and even the fire steel loop is a nice leather right there matching and this is canvas micarta okay check here now this knife is similar to the jeff white it's the old style the old style thus knife is pretty cool looking to be honest very nice work on this 1095 and it's got a nice finger choil a little bit bigger than your jeff white and again your micarta scales you got three different colors green brown and black and it's not very thick so pretty much all angles will be comfortable and it's not heavy at all you know it's pretty lightweight there's a little bit of fire work you know you can ask your knife maker to make it a little bit of my file work and also the rest of that look how cool that is what he did on the rest of the to make this the gold pretty cool knife so if you look around and you take your time

and let's say you're done with the mora and you'd like something a little bit better there are tons of knife makers out there that could make you something in this in this style like more of a trapper now I know this doesn't look like a trapper I'll talk about the knife style they could make you some thing for really a reasonable price you just got to look around and ask around so I'm going to show you two more knives that again are in a complete different direction it's not everyone who likes Scandi grind it's not everyone who likes old trapper designs a lot of people would like more modern tactical and larger type knives and one company that does that that are renowned for all that is cold steel and the prices of some of their knives is is very good now one popular one is this one I'm pretty sure you recognize it now this is not the sheet that goes with it recognize this Bushmen now the steel if I remember well is it's carbon steel I think it's sk5 now these are larger blades I think it's almost a seven-inch blade it's a very thin around 1/8 so when you come at Downton when you come down right to here they give you a very thin edge so it's very sharp and this makes a great slicer a great cutter for those who like larger knives and when you consider hollow handle knives this is probably one of the strongest ones because it's one whole piece ok there's no welding there or adding to it it's all one piece and of course people can use this as a spear or put a stake and extend your reach for whatever you have to do others will you know fashion a a cover here and something here and fill this up with good old emergency survival goods in there so this is another option and it's really a cheap knife to buy I know maybe 40 50 bucks but this could be another style that you could like maybe you don't like the other style now another of cold steel's knives which again in the larger style knives I know they have tons of good knives that are smaller and all that but we're talking about this one and it's or was popular and probably still is is the SRK the SRK will be a little bit more expensive SRK which is survival rescue knife I think it goes around in the 70 bucks but it's super well made and people like it I think this is what you call crate on handles I mean if you don't like anything slipping because of water or blood if you're hunting this is I mean nothing coming you'll never lose your knife for this kind of handle it's an awesome looking handle it's vg1 from japan and you know if you watch a lot of videos people use this a lot for you know a camp knife it's also a defensive knife as you can see you the folks wedge but it's it's just another option and it comes with a nice cutting sheet okay it secures in there really nice so this could be another option from Cold Steel and I know there are many others but that's what I have to show you conclude this video because this is like the title says you know beginners budget-friendly knives in all denies you've seen I would highly recommend depending where you're at and your skill levels these two compared to everything else I've shown you you know considering you're just starting because they're cheap to buy easy to control and easy maintenance easy to sharpen I mean they're not too expensive at all so these are the two ones the classic I think they called the 5-11 and if this is not your type and you want to go more traditional well the bush floor is the way to go what's it's a cheap knife to buy and it's really loved so that's it I hope you had some fun thanks for watching this is Mike from bushcraft parts bye
