Video Transcription

well this is good news then having quite a bit of grain these last two weeks and my creeks are running this one and another one I have on the other side awesome

all right so today we're gonna spend the night under a tarp in the fall obviously leaves are falling pretty fast but there's quite a lot of rain coming so I want to get set up hopefully before everything starts

if not we'll just play in the rain but it's you know it's going to be plus two so cold rain is not as much fun as warm rain so don't go away [Music]

so we've come to our usual place in the maple forest and things have change are already starting to change it wasn't for my tripod I would have probably had a hard time finding it oh yeah let's start installing this tarp the wind is has no direction sadly so we'll see I'm gonna have to try and guess the predominant wind for tonight because you know what happens in the I'm in the mountains so with trees it's well you can't always count on the forecast let me say it that way so I have an idea because of all the leaves had a little bit of a hard time finding this place and got to be very careful and putting stuff on the ground as you will lose them

I'm playing a game of roulette right now with the rain the wind is changing all the time so let's hope I made the right choice because then I have to rearrange all this and you know of course I could make it rain proof and everything but I won't be able to film so I need to open my options and have some quick releases if the rain starts coming down pretty quick because the thing you're gonna save the most and everything is what I'm looking at right now that camera I brought the other one the GoPro but still most of the time okay if you count a little bit or just feel the wind for maybe five minutes just feel it where it's coming from okay then it's gonna want to switch once in a while but it always comes back to that predominant if you don't have or if you can't look at the weather right now when I'm you know I waited five minutes at least wind's coming out but it's always coming back from there the main wind not the gusts so I'm hoping that I'll be okay and it's starting to rain like right now oh my gosh I didn't even get wood it's only one o'clock okay I gotta cover you okay so

I actually decided to keep you know the main leaves on the ground here because they're soaking wet under well because the rain is coming that's coming down right away I didn't have time to you know let the wind dry that out a bit so I'm going to use it but you get rid of all the rest here [Applause]

yeah I need to get some firewood [Applause]

it's lovely though you know the rain but you don't want to get yourself wet because then it's not as lovely okay we just have to keep the fire you know that low minimum I'm not gonna need the whole fire I mean all day long or all night and it's still very early so [Applause]

and it looks like I did the right choice or I made the right choice rains coming from there praise God as long as it doesn't change during the night yeah it's coming southeast just like this a little bit plans that I can see it but at least I'm behind it let's see a little bit on the bag but that's okay I can move that around when I empty it okay

so far the rain is not too bad if it could stay like that all night would be cool but I know it's not supposed to be quite a bit of rain starting around 9:00 or 10:00 o'clock there all night of course we can make proper shelters against the rain but as I said before if I do that it'll be impossible for me to film anything you don't want me you don't want to see a whole film in a tent tarp shelter it's impossible i plus i need fire mostly to cook i wouldn't really need it I brought my alcohol stove but I still want some fire for later so right now I'm thinking what should I do should I start gathering firewood or just have a coffee and relax first I've got a pretty nice view right now I mean it looks cool check it out so I decided to bring this corner in I'd say at a 75 degree angle because my head's gonna be there and if I'm blessed the wind won't change or the breeze won't change direction I'll be good all night I feel no rain whatsoever here in my hand just to protect me sleeping bag and all that good stuff so hopefully we should be good now even on the side of my bag I got pretty much everything at one out cook kit a water bottle my alcohol

just in case my knife my axe my saw is just behind and always check ok it's safe no raid I can leave them there and they're not in the way of my I'm not gonna put my bedding right away I'm just gonna away cuz you know it's so humid everything's gonna become humid and obviously it's gonna become humid but I'm in no rush so right now I'm gonna drink and get some wood I wasn't too hard to top down yet there's still some good here so one way of knowing especially in the fall could be difficult when the leaves are gone one of the main things to see if you're a wood is you know a dead tree is a bark it'll peel off really easy now this one here is kind of punky but for at least 1012 feet it seems to be okay I'm still gonna keep it once the fire goes of course I don't need you Jase's [Applause]

still nice

few adjustments

[Applause]

I kept the bend I didn't I'm not putting it tight because I don't want to ruin the power but you know when you set up your tarp in a way that you want to film you're not thinking all the time and it was building a pocket here and I don't want to have to every five minutes you know just push it up there so I just put a it's not in the way of my bed I can still put my chair just about here and it's not windy enough that it's gonna fall not yet anyway if it does well I'll do something else but for now there's always adjust mentally I got scenes I want to do got that should work could have made it nice cane too but we'll stick with that okay so now the winds are shifting sadly and they're coming in like this towards me but hopefully that's going to change and come back to what it's supposed to be I think it's time for coffee I could use my alcohol stove but I think I'm gonna I don't have enough wood for tonight I'm not gonna build a fire until I need it like when it's dark okay you know it gets dark early now so I mean you need a lot of wood and I don't need wood to keep me warm tonight just a little bit to cook and maybe not even so we might light up the main fire much later but I'm gonna saw small pieces because you know what the bush not the bush box sorry about that the fire box nano fire box that's my second yeah I I've never it's never been burned not even once because I always use it for my trendiest oh so I'm gonna you know saw some pieces and baton it and we're gonna have our coffee in that this time with real fire okay so I decided to put a little bit tighter so I made a little hole in this piece of wood and the point there keeps it pretty pretty stable it's up about 5 inches this because the wind was tending to be a little going that way and now it's going to stay in this position and they don't need to worry about it it's still in its curve you know positions because I'm facing it right now but that way my workstation I'll stay dry for my coffee [Applause]

[Applause]

should be more than plenty okay Coffee time oh come on it's not the time to switch pretty please

I did say pretty please this I'm not gonna need this for now I want to use it probably for cooking this don't need this going to do this don't need this and I don't need that this just going to need the ahh open open open my opening the right side here come on you what's going on Oh dummy dummy so all I need in reality is my firebox nano nice I can put away all this away like that like that like that like that

[Applause]

okay

they use a bit of fat with this time I never get tired of that smell and a few bigger pieces can you smell it oh gosh heavenly

no come on there you go that's my son stable

I can whatever small pieces did I have in here

well it's raining you just take more of your time to get your fire going it's going to go then I got myself here some a mini cord if you can see that the mini cord of nice maple so this away get all this away

very first burned thing is going well of course I've got another hole on this side here you can throw in won't steam the lens for you the cheers [Applause]

[Applause]

all right so I know it's it's 4:30 right now it's already getting pretty dark and I'm actually getting pretty cold you know when you stop moving get some chills so I think I'm going to cook supper right away I'm going to use the alcohol stove and then I'm going to go out and get some more wood because I'm definitely going to need a fire a lot sooner and I'm cold and if I don't I'm gonna have to slip into my sleeping bag a lot earlier than I expected but I'm going to try and make a fire and not a big huge one just enough to keep me warm and cozy because this rain ain't stopping and I I can feel the temperature drop so let's get cooking Oh got some good spaghetti in there it's already cooked and I threw in some some cheese okay what's that cheese anyway you know what kind of cheese it is it's mozzarella but there's another word for it that I had at home it's not gonna melt completely but it's gonna do the job some nice warm homemade spaghetti is going to warm the belly and the soul yeah I think I'm going to we're going to add some water because I'm gonna have to not too much because I don't want to dilute it I'm gonna have to keep an eye on this so I'm not gonna record the whole thing so it doesn't burn

[Applause]

okay take care of this then we'll take care of some fire I need to prep [Applause]

[Music]

[Applause]

I'd be really careful especially with titanium the heat transfer is quick so if I'm not careful it's gonna burn I don't want to burn want to be able to eat this whole thing yeah homemade good stuff [Music]

[Applause]

put that a few more minutes that good yeah

[Applause]

Oh

yeah

[Applause]

save on fuel [Applause]

okay

oh yeah warms up my hands I love spaghetti

you guys want a bike focus yeah hey what about a nice piece of cheese with that hmm

[Applause]

I seriously don't know what I'm gonna do tonight gets dark at 6:00 I guess I'll be sticking to the fire so though might not be much filming I'm gonna do my bedding just at the last minute just to keep it dry as long as I can but you know from humidity anyway anyway I don't have much of a choice because I'm if I won a fire I need to sit back and I'd be sitting on my bedding so the fire will receive some rain not too much I hope [Applause]

oh this is my other pot when it comes to titanium this like this you know my smaller father I use for coffee I never use I never put food where the other pot has never seen food this is the Pooh the other one is liquids coffee tea hot chocolate guys I wouldn't want my morning coffee tastes like spaghetti get me get me [Applause]

alright I'm gonna finish this and before it gets too dark I need to get some wood yeah see you guys later almost done

okay so I didn't just clear path goes for my fire conserving the leads but also all around here because it's raining quite a bit I want to see if there's any streak of water that can come in towards me because I am on a slant like this going that way not too much but still and that keeps me off get the hand out of there that keeps my eye out for any potential water that will want to come into my shelter but I'm not worried about it because look at all those leaves they take they control everything but still I'm happy that I can see

[Applause]

[Applause]

[Applause]

that's okay just take your time [Applause]

[Applause]

now gotta make a few of these and even while that's waiting there it's gonna catch more humidity all right see it's a little punky here [Applause]

[Applause]

[Applause]

[Applause]

and have to use the whole the whole piece this time [Applause]

[Applause]

[Applause]

see if I don't make a mess out of this yeah I'm gonna make a mess go somewhere else okay knife away now now brown cow [Applause]

[Applause]

[Applause]

[Applause]

little but surely slowly but surely [Applause]

[Applause]

got lots of kindling trust me wanna see [Applause]

so that'll really be pretty B does it make sense pretty B so that will pretty much be the size of the fire I don't want any bigger than that and that's not enough wood yeah so I want to go get a have two more or maybe one free and that's it and even though it's a little whip once it's hot it's fine as you can see the wasn't quite dry the bubbles coming out of there so [Applause]

feels good though [Applause]

this is prettier right put it right in the center there little bigger than that that's plenty

so I have no idea where I'm going to fill math room probably not much but I'm certainly going to enjoy the fire try and stay dry and just before going to bed I will make my camp my sleeping area and go to sleep [Applause]

now I'm comfortable just a little fire even though it's that wasn't me even though it's cold and wet not too far away right here at this moment in time it's just beautiful I just hope that the wind

so I'm gonna keep it not too not too high right now it's perfect it's not gonna get any bigger and it doesn't show in the camera right now it looks like it's still clear it's getting really dark so I really stopped I need to get at least one other tree and I'm not gonna film that too much of a pain right now you know how to get a tree right okay one more stack it there and I'm really done really done for the night well you know the big work anyway it's very relaxing okay that's it I'm gonna become lazy again let me close this where is the button is the button there I

see me in there [Applause]

okay let me give you a little tip of course this is mostly for the newbies but when you get into the colder weather and doesn't matter if you stay a day or night week whatever stay warm it's always important to have something in your back don't work alright you stay like this okay this is the lowest thing okay so it's always important to have something in your back doesn't matter if it's just a simple tarp like this a lean-to or any type of shelter let me tell you why as the weather gets colder even though you dress warm

you have nice heat you know right in the front that's keeping you warm but you always have that cold air in the back and it doesn't really matter how well dressed you are you're eventually going to be cold in the back because again even though you're well dressed when you stop moving and you get constant cold air even though it's not you're like minus 40 I mean it doesn't have to be just a freezing point or even a little higher you're gonna get chilled so by having a wall in the back just a simple wall it's gonna keep your back warm not because it retains a lot of heat obviously it doesn't retain a lot of heat but it does retain some and keeps the cold air off of your back so that will keep you very comfortable or if you have another wool blanket that's fine too but the best is this way and that way I mean it's it's pretty chilly out there and I am very toasty warm and I know that this tarp is not reflecting anything really but it's retaining some of the heat and stopping not just the rain but the cold air to come in my back and give me chills so any newbies out there remember that it's gonna make your days and nights a lot more comfortable in the colder weather hear me this is nice boys and girls all my work is done all I gotta do is relax and enjoy my time here and that especially happens when that camera is closed so some people may be asking why I bring this Lantern in but the candle well first I love the ambient light that it gives now it doesn't light up a whole bunch and I know they sell uh like a roof on it to make it brighter so just the ambience of it in the pitch dark I don't there's just something about it that I love and also I usually put clothes on all the time but right now it's close to my bag now in the camera you probably can't see but I can get into my bag and out without even using my flashlight and get the stuff that I need

not tons of light but it does do something

[Applause]

[Applause]

I'm actually going to put the fire out before going to bed believe it or not I won't need it and I'll make sure not to puncture my sleeping pad or a sleeping bag you know don't need it so [Applause]

[Applause]

[Applause]

okay so riding into a few problems first of all the seams here are not holding on anymore so water is coming in that way and water is coming in this way and the winds start blowing like crazy so anyway and my sleeping bag is wet I thought for sure that I guess the back of my bag got wet more than anything else I left it inside

and I'm going to have to readjust I have to take that main pull remember the quick release bring that down bring that corner down because the winds are just going crazy and I don't want to have to fight with that tonight just hoping this whole thing

okay thank God it's not so bad that's the one thing about synthetic bags compared to down is that I can compromise a bit with like that when there's it doesn't show but there's humidity and stuff and rain coming in and I can still get that on my sleeping bag without you know keeping me I'm upside down keeping me still warm a down sleeping bag it's awesome you can compress it very small you can get the minus 30 and compress it really small and I'll keep you really warm but the two cons about down or down sleeping bags is that because of the feathers that will absorb humidity much quicker and if ever it gets a little wet it takes forever to dry and I know nowadays they even have a special coating that they put on the feathers before putting in the sleeping bag but again it's gonna cost you you know you can get down sleeping bags like three four five even a thousand dollars and this is I know 70 maybe 80 I can't remember okay so I'm going to have to see it's all it's all wet I'm gonna have to bring all that down

try and stay warm tonight so what I'm going to do is first adjust my corners bring that down so I have like this because I can hear that wind that's gonna come back and try and keep the width out of here so I don't get too cold and readjust that I'm gonna bring that chair here so I can put my you know I need to change I need to get into my sleeping my fleece and wool socks and hat stuff I'm going to put my wool hoodie under it's not going to get wet because it's gonna be under the pad and it's gonna give me a you know a headrest at the same time and tomorrow this is gonna hopefully be dry and this I'm gonna put on top of the chair that's gonna be close to me there just before I change my clothes yeah so that means my bag is at the bottom is soaked cuz I was a little bit too close and the rain has stopped a bit but the wind the wind is just crazy it was a lot worse than right now trust me I gotta take care of that wind problem bring that down rig that down I'm not gonna bring that corner down there because I want my lantern so it should be okay all right so I'm going to roll this up and hit come on wind see

seem here that's leaking got another one here this tarp is nine years old so nothing against it it's just normal use oh yeah my bag is uh no that's okay alright so I guess this is gonna be it for tonight I need to make my adjustments and get into my fleece hat long johns warm socks hopefully the wind will be calm down here again to my warm sleeping bag oh it's gonna feel good and I got good news the rains supposed to stop around 12:00 or 1:00 o'clock so that's changed but now hearing that my gosh

the good thing that win is the top of the trees and not down here because this tarp would rip yeah so I'm going to do all that little work and we shall hopefully see you hopefully see you in the morning okay all right on get these leaves out of here I don't want to sleep with leat wet leaves the rains coming again I brought this corner down I don't want to bring this middle down because I don't want water dripping there and coming in so the waters gonna drip in the leaves here and hopefully we'll be okay maybe I will bring it down a little bit but that's what it's going to be gotta get this camera ah great there that is much better much better I have to keep the front open and all that for filming but right now go into bed I don't need to do that so I took the post off I brought these two down make sure water you know goes down that corner over there it doesn't come in here and you know have a river down here okay time to get into my clothes and call it a night so this is for real good night folks stay warm well good morning oh what a night there's so it snow let it snow well

let me tell you I didn't sleep much last night

mostly because of the crazy howling winds it's just non-stop and even today is but last night was like wow

and then because of this big win well the temperature plummeted down I was really cold so I got I got chilled a few times that bag is not made for you know freezing but with this kind of wind there was a little too much I wasn't too comfortable so mostly the wind and also the cold

alright get a nice little coffee and I can see the sky is getting dark again have a coffee pack up and oh yeah absolutely okay so this is the expedition Basecamp I think we're just Basecamp o-p-s from snuck back and you can see it's not that cheap it's reinforced with stuff I'll leave the information description of this video but I'm adding this to my list

it's gone I don't know six feet by two by three thick it's pretty lightweight and it's compact anyways compared to what I had before you can either blow it with your mouth or you have a hand pump on this side but you you know you poke with your hand I did say I would test it and I'm very pleased with it it's a portable comfortable

now this is not a four-season this is just three season and I didn't feel any cold even though it was frozen but if anything would happen if you want to go camping in the winter I would add something to this not just that so yeah this is going in my list I'm taking my time and be very careful of what I put in the list and what I mean by a list if this the first time you watch one of my videos in the description of all my videos you see the gear that I recommend and use that the gear that you see me use okay if you don't see me use it that's not gonna go there see it compacts about three inches by eight inches now it does have its own it's got a nice elastic that goes around it but right now my hands are so cold that I don't feel like finding it in my bag it does have its own little stuff sack but I'm going to use a stuff sack of the tarp for now because the tarp is gonna go straight in my bag no stuff sack whatsoever

I don't normally do this no I didn't even take the ropes off but actually there's some snow starting to fall we saw the Sun a little bit but trust me they're not announcing very nice my hands are cold and I need to start hiking

oh this is going to be a mess of the rope that's right no way it's all frozen I don't care right now okay put ice as I can't [Applause]

if I would have had time today I was certainly made of fire but I don't and I would have needed a fire Hey look

Oh cold oh yeah she's gonna snow okay that's it for this video I'm sorry guys the morning was quick but I had to do it quick because getting out of the sleeping bag was I had to move yeah hope you enjoyed this little trip don't forget to enjoy yourself to go out and just relax don't need to go out in the freezing cold rain but you know what I would try it if you never did give you some experience you can go in your backyard if you want see what you have to do and things you don't have to do or shouldn't do I should say okay always take our last look around make sure you don't forget anything it doesn't look like it all right so this is Mike from bushcraft Barden's enjoy the wilderness and we'll see you in another video probably I'd like to show you another tarp shelter that is very rain snow proof storm proof and very simple to do hopefully in the next outdoor video you guys take care [Music]

you
