see one of the problems with our winters now is that at times we get mild weather and it rains and of course it refreezes you can see that now the tree is has a coating of ice over it so this is normally very dry tinder that I use has a coat of ice so makes it more difficult to get anything going see right here or mine there's a coat of ice on that so wish we'd have our winter as we used to have them so we're out here today just taking some fresh air and I'm needing some natural resources that I'm lacking need to find a a cedar tree I need some of that and hopefully by the creek here I can find one just a normal snowshoe hike in the woods so let's try and find a cedar tree there you go as I mentioned in a lot of my videos cedar when we use it as a for the flint and steel method especially in the winter time where are things wet is a well the best whole extent that you can find in my opinion so I'm going to collect some of this fill up my little pouch here because it's empty it should be good for a little while

just in case you in case you've never seen this this is what it looks like it's fine shavings and no I'm not hurting the tree at all this will make a great coal extender your foot and steel or whatever you use it for right now it's full of ice because of the rain but it will have time to dry in my pouch so yep gonna be all right so you guys remember I had a problem with my GSI kettle it was unwell d'ang or it unwelded from that side here right there and you guys give me a whole bunch of good ideas and I thank you for that but I went with mr. Bill's idea just to take a wire and wire it up and plus I have a wire if ever I would need it for anything else now this is just a little cheapy wire that I had at home I will replace it with a bigger gauge but it works great it's not in the way and I'm pretty sure it's going to hold this thing here okay now I have to get this of course it was full of ice and it started to melt in my pockets but now it's very damp so I'm gonna try it like that if not I'm gonna have to try something else so don't go too far trying to stay at the same place try and warm one place up you have to be patient when it's damp on you okay so this should have started a long time ago but it's too damp so we're gonna try something else I'm not I don't want to waste all my Ferro rod for that okay so as I've shown in many many videos you have three trees that will produce liquid resin you have the balsam fir Douglas fir and the white spruce okay so out now right now this is a a balsam fir and of course the bubbles are well camouflaged if I pick one like right here see that I'm going to use some of that resin that will come out of it where am I sorry about that I'll just push it you see that liquid now that is very flammable that's gonna help but because it's wintertime this thing is frozen so it is gonna need more heat than usual to get her going and it's better to try and spread it on something so that's what we're gonna do what I'm gonna do is I'm going to spread on this piece of birch bark and it's the same principle when you light something up the smaller lighter stuff will light faster than if I do it on this big flat surface so I want to take this resin and I'm going to spread it on the small stuff a little bit everywhere now and concentrate just on that okay now because the resin is cold it's still going to take a little bit more heat than usual because usually in the summer when that's really hot I mean it's it starts off like nobody's business so I'm trying to give me a nice little place here there you go that's how it burns nice okay hurry up hurry up hurry up don't lose it even the rest of the birch bark is having a hard time come on boy there you go so it's always good to know a few things to help you out out here in the bush natural stuff make your life a little easier now usually in the winter it's you know pretty simple to get fires going but again when it rains well and it freezes even these dried sticks have a little bit of ice so you have to take special care at the beginning of your fire but I mean stay around it you see these oxygen you know blow on it look at this it's just full of ice but fire is hot enough it will come through that's cool thank you see the wind is helping me quite a bit right now thank God for nature and I'm not planning to build too much of a big fire just enough to have of course our usual coffee good should be not so bad now putting it on your pieces okay I think we're pretty much settled with that okay so far is doing pretty well burn the gloves not worried about my fire any longer so I'm just gonna have a coffee which is almost ready and then I'm going to put a little bit more because a bit more wood as I need some char cloth I'm running out yeah so today was a good day we I found pretty much everything I was looking for before spending this quality time out here is you know always a blessing Oh beautiful rich color throws an ash won't kill you but okay so while I'm out here I'll make myself some char cloth now if you've never seen char cloth just your cotton t-shirts or jeans cutting small pieces I got myself a bigger can this time it already has some holes on both sides so you don't want to put it on complete fire mostly on coals so I'm gonna put it here that'll be good enough and the trick to have some good char cloth is to make sure you don't leave it you just check it when the smoke starts coming out on both holes in the minute there the second you got to check and see and make sure that when the smoke stops coming out you take that off right away because if you don't you're going to cook your char cloth too much it's gonna crystallize and it will not work very well so we'll take a look at that a little bit later okay so that's the smoke I'm telling you that's coming out there okay now sometimes it'll catch flame that's fine that's what you got a chick now once that's done once you see that there's no more smoke take it off and wait for it to cool off before you open it it took about 2 3 minutes okay now it's important to let it cool off okay first of all because it's too hot for your hands and second of all this thing is really hot if you I don't know let oxygen in if there's a little spark that goes in this thing is going to burn so you want to avoid that so let's take a look here let me get you out of the smoke here so it's easy for all of us to see something all right so there's a few pieces here that are not charred but everything is theirs this is just awesome

oh yeah have some nice pieces in there see that is perfectly charred right there that's what you want let me give you an example here now my hands are wet but you see how it doesn't break too much in pieces and it's still a little bit flexible and you can see through it this is perfectly charged right there when a little spark goes on that from your flint and steel it's gonna catch right away now usually at the bottom where it's hardest is where there's our ones are not so good I can find you an example

well actually it's not so bad anywhere everywhere it's good there's a few pieces here that I'm going to reboot that needs to be charred again I rather do it a couple of times I'll take the good ones out and reach our this one and a few more but this is what you're looking for right here okay now as I have repeated myself when you cook it too much it becomes hard and Christus it crystallizes and it becomes no good also another tip now as you can see it's not fully packed when you want a char you don't want to pack it all full because you're gonna it's not it's not gonna do that much of a good job you just want to throw the pieces in and leave it you know free to make sure that the hard air goes everywhere and chars everything because if you pack it too full the top ones will eventually become too charred and the middle ones will become like this and you'll just have a few good pieces so anyway I'm happy about this and if you've never charred anything well hope you learn something so anyway I'm satisfied for today still a beautiful day it's not too cold it's like minus 10 or something what's -10 in Fahrenheit zero is 30 I know maybe 15 I'm not quite sure but anyway it's nice just enough to warm ourselves up and what's cool about fire now I know that we all learn in survival books that if you don't put a platform the moisture will kill your fire from under and it will affect it a little bit okay I've showed you even how to start a fire right on the snow no platform because what's great about fire is that it climbs up so as long as you put stuff on top it's always gonna burn the only problem is is that you're gonna dig a hole and after that you're gonna lack oxygen unless you dig some trenches especially when it comes to snow now snow contains a lot of oxygen that's why it doesn't have much water so it evaporates pretty quick and that doesn't have time to really put out the fire from under now you read a lot in books that snow contains 90% air and 10% water well that's not completely true not all the time it depends on the weather sometimes we what we call here is wet snow the snow is heavier I would say it's more of a 40 60 or 50 50 percent water 60 percent to 50 percent air depends on the weather perfect condition where it's cool and dry cold and dry maybe 90 percent but usually it'll average in the 60 to 40 depending where you
