folks today I'm on the hunt for well actually harvesting horse hoof fungus and well I received a new toy at the same time so we're going to look at it together the weather for two weeks has been like rain sun rain sun rain sun rain sun so you got to stop caring of what's going to happen and just go out and be ready so see you later [Music]

so I'm not going to explain this is another video on horse hoof fungus years ago I made several videos about the a module and stuff and you know people are educated now they they know all about that stuff but mainly you find them on a dying or dead birch tree this is a paper birch yeah it's been all raining all the time this is soaked to the bone well to the boat I guess there's no bones here but I can't see anything dead enough yet to find them so just keep on going what about here fire a whole load of them they're healthy so nothing here either most of the time you'll find them when you know the birch is lying down but I want to find more when it's standing up dead because like anything else once it's slowing down you don't know how dead it's been and the a module inside won't be good I give it just a little example of this one here see like that that's not good it's rotten and you've got a little guy here got a whole bunch on this see this is not good so even the amateurs don't even there's nothing good about it so got a few here but again too rotten see there's already holes where the amédée would be this one too it's trees been dead too long little good alright so what I'll do is when I do find something that I like I will open up the camera again so going downhill and terrain not that plus everything is wet it's funny I think that goes for pretty much anything when you go out specifically to find something you have a hard time when you're not looking for it it's all over the place

so as I said I'm not looking for chaga I'm looking for whores who fungus well it's kind of an adventure it's kind of fun but man usually I find so much easier than what's going on right now I don't know if I feel like going way down that mountain I have to take a decision now and see okay so finally I got some that are decent here's a nice healthy one and seems to be healthy ones going right to the top but I can't see so I'm gonna have to bring this big bad boy down

well I thought this one was good but something's chewing through the Amadou going through it so useless don't rain right away well it was false alarm they were all rotten but then I come on this again and it's like waist-high yep nice little chunk but the leaves are out so little use picking this up okay let's keep hunting here oh my goodness look at that I see something I see something let me show you if I can zoom in properly look at those look at those exactly what I've been looking for sadly some are pretty high let me get closer here if I don't fall oh yeah baby hallelujah a live tree and some good it's filled look at that nice healthy pieces turn around oh my goodness yes look at that look at that whoo now I'm a happy camper folks a happy camper let's harvest it so the best way of harvesting these is from bottom up okay take it from the bottom you pull up yeah don't you love that okay I'm going to scrape my knuckles there

double lovely right there see that's where the a madhu is oh no I was starting to rain it sets felt like stuff and it's going to be it's everywhere here right on the edge of the bark but most of it is found at the top here you can just get to it with my nails but I doubt it anyway you see it around the corner there you see that felt like here yep tinder back in the day they process this and use it for the flint and steel you can't get it right off the tree let me say this again you cannot get this right off the tree and use it okay guys this is full moisture doesn't work you need to let it dry char it or process it so got to be careful look at this beauty this that's all i'ma do it I mean it's a lot of work but those I'd like to play around with it it's fun you just got to take the hard bark on top and like anything if you take it right away it's so much easier than if you let it dry for so long then it becomes no tougher you take this bark off once the bark is taken off then you just take your knife and you take the a Madhu off it'll be it depends on pieces there but it's not that thick because you get into these fibers okay I mean you can char these fibers it'll work but you don't want this is not the a Madhu you want you just want this felt like thing and you're going to have some all the way you know you into the bottom here I take time to take this off see right to the bottom so it's all around take your time the thickest part will be at the top nice well that was a nice find but I need to find another batch just a few tips I know this is not supposed to be a horse hoof fungus video there's people call true tinder fungus and false tinder fungus they refer to to turn your fungus concerning the chaga and they refer to false tinder fungus concerning the a madhu well I'm no expert here okay but logically speaking there's no true or false both of them are funguses and both them can be used as tinder so just call them tinder fungus that's it if you want to use them for tinder

now the a Madhu is on the exterior as I showed you at the top is going to be thickest but at the bottom is going to be very thin which is when you have to be careful when you do slice you want to slice that just at a Madhu part so it's already thin for you to be easily dried out or easily processed whatever that's what's cool about it also I explained to you that it cannot be used directly from the tree sometimes you see some videos a take something from the tree and right away they use it and it's like you know lights up now 90% of the time that is not true unless you live in an area that is extremely dry it hasn't rained for a month and you find that piece on a very dead tree where there's no more Sep going up or flowing into the tree and your avenue is dried up and if you crumble it you know the saw there might be a chance but 90% of the time you have to wait wait for it to dry or process it properly so you can use it so I know if that's a rant or name but I just have to say it okay so it was worth going down I'm going to go up now well anyway you can't see through this but it'll be more bushwhacking well I'm glad the sun's out oh gosh I think I see some more oh it's going to be hard to get one of the reasons why the M&E can be used right away is because it's like a felt it's like a sponge now you know how hard it is to dry out a sponge it absorbs all the water that it can if you've ever taken it and just squeezing you see all the water coming out now the one thing you can do is char your whole your whole thing that's the only way you can really use it right away now I made a video years ago about how you can carry your fire using that you take that piece right off the tree you throw in your fire okay facedown wood out up the fire for about 10-15 minutes and that inside will smolder I made little holes and I used a spruce root and once in a while you just turn it to give it oxygen that thing really works it's going to smolder for a long time depending on the size of your horseshoe fungus now the whole thing char not just am i do the whole inside when it works okay let's go hunting didn't I say this was not just an AM adieu video huh anyway this is the last time hopefully I'll be saying you something are telling you something I know that we would like to try and find the big pieces because they have more a module on them and of course if you do find a big piece because usually the big pieces are not rotten but they're not that great but if you do find a healthy big piece that's good but the general rule like in anything when you find young pieces little smaller ones your image is going to be a lot more quality than a big one you'll have less but more quality just thought you know so I know some of you'll be asking me to make a video out of processes and all that I have all those videos just look it up in my channel you know if you go in the search and write a module pretty much all the amateur videos will be there I think there's one I process it and how to use it and chart it but you don't want I figured out the best way is just a chart a little bit don't try it all through char's just the top so that it'll be easier to catch okay your little spark the middle will be still dried out but your coal will last longer because the EM after that top chart is burning then it gets into the a module that's not in the inside and then it takes a while even longer gives you a longer chance or a better chance I should say of getting your fire started so oh a nice red oak here I didn't know there was oak trees okay let me give you a little view here yeah it's been you see these clouds they've been hovering for two weeks now rain just drops and stops the Sun comes out like at the other end here I call them

spits and kind of funny huh it seems about the rain just goes on a certain area but that's what it is hey there's a dead limb there maybe but I'm not going down there because it's a even though there's a lot of foliage it's a nice drop I don't feel like going so one last look at the view you can see some farms way over there lots of wood between us okay hope it's not going to rain pretty dark looking mean cloud there okay so now we're entering a hardwood forest see birch and maple so far hopefully I'll find another batch if not we're going to take a break I have been walking for a couple hours and I need to stop a little bit so let's see what we shall find as I'm walking I'm thinking okay well we got paper birch we have yellow birch and maple all maple and that's what typically grows in in our region of the hard forest but something that's not rare but not typical is the beach growing at the same place got one beech tree right there and two more one two [Applause]

not so bad and we'll talk about this new toy so but you guys helped me find a nice area because when you're not comfortable and you're trying to explain something you miss out on all kinds of stuff so take my time and I guess the only thing oh there's a dead falling tree over there let's go check that out that doesn't work we'll find something unless so right in front of me is a beech tree I think I've shown an example of this to you before but look what's on the beech tree one two let's start climbing

not a bad-sized bear - there's my hand and you see him he slipped there anyway climbed all around hugging the tree here now bears obviously like to climb beech trees for the beech nuts and it's perfectly suited for them to climb there's no hard bark and there's all there's not all kinds of branches for them to get in the way small branches and stuff so they can climb properly and get a snack up there see all this side to there right up to the top you want to the top but anyway that's what it is okay I still haven't found an area to sit down now you must be saying will you stop talking and start showing yeah you're right next thing will be my toy alright so I can't seem to find any proper area to sit down but I have to stop and take a break so what I'll do is take this thing off it looks like it may not rain any longer and I'll just show you my toy oh this is a wet man I'll just show you my toy standing up which is not you know the best of things are you going to hear all kinds of noises I know why every time we my goodness behind you there's three nice chunks of chaga

it seems like you guys know when we film playing a lovely plane seem to pass over and so if that happens I'm not going to close the camera I'm just going to let that plane go by that's it so oh man it feels good I'm stoked all right let me just show you what I mean by a nice junket I'll go behind you you get dying there's a small my site there little hires another nice size right there well look at that piece man look at that beautiful isn't it so this our boy I've been talking about that I've recently received and this is from a trade this is the AKC American knife company compact forest knife if you a quick look real fast

I've played around just a little bit with it and I will keep on playing around so this is just a overview or something I don't know it's not a full review but who cares right I'm just showing the knife and I give you my thoughts about it it's a to steel canvas micarta it's got a butt cap at the end here and this butt cap is not welded it's pinned you know if I'll be able to show this there you see that so that's very solid and it gives less weight because it's not welded as you can see this is what does it look like yeah it does Oh almost drop it it looks like Skookum Busch tool that is that's what you guessed you're right about it they this is designed from more schooling Sookie's design but in a more of a compact way now it's called the compact force knife I mean it's very lightweight it's very slim you know they did everything so that it becomes kind of lightweight but at the same time don't expect a nice round handle that will fill up the hand and be very comfortable that's not this type of knife I don't think it was the design for that it's designed for you know compact it says it all has to be lightweight and small and maybe for EDC but it's strong enough to do larger tasks okay what I mean is I wouldn't be doing push cuts all day with this knife just because it's so thin here that it would hurt you know what I'm saying but it's not made for that to use I mean hours after hours hours of push cuts this is a type of knife so far I really enjoy it just because you know it's very lightweight and it's got lots of control just because it's lightweight in any position you use it is cool no all the twists and turns you need to make on the wood could be carving or feather steaks and all that and the Skookum is it continuous swoop here which makes it a great slicer it's about it looks thicker than 1/8 of an inch maybe five thirty seconds or 1/8 stock I'm not too sure about four inch blade about four and a half inch handle I would say give or take it's just what can I say I love this knife just because of it you know it's lightweight you carry it on your belt and you don't even know it's there really this is serious but it's still a strong knife and a well-designed knife now this is designed by a Casey but it's produced by bark River and as usual bark bark River is top-notch and everything they do I'm never disappointed the fit and finish is really good on it the material is top quality I mean this is this will last like a lifetime or more and the design from AKC is a well thought design first of all is from something that already exists that works well but I like the thought of being a compact okay food-prep hunting I mean this thing is very lightweight it's fun to use really it did you need to hold it to really realize how cool it is what else that's about it I guess I could say about the knife I mean the knife is super now let's just take a look at the sheet okay one last thing I'm important that I forgot to say as you can see it's Scandi grind that's what they say but I want to let you know that starting from the bevel line here going down it's slightly convexed okay it's not flat it's slightly convex now there's some new information sort of that camera fell now there's some new information or maybe it's not new but it's new to me that a true kiya troops candy was actually made this way slightly convex now before they use machines to make the grinds let's take more as an example these were made by hand and naturally by hand it would convex a little bit so this is what people now call a truce and II instead of being you know straight flat V it's a little bit rounded at the cutting edge but I'm not arguing that or debating on that because I don't really care to be honest being that it's a little convex and makes the edge much stronger instead of having that thin edge where it tends to want to roll this one won't so it's a good idea from a Casey to have made this a little convex like this nice little knife okay so I mean the knife is just an awesome knife let me tell you I just love it just because it's so lightweight easy to control anything you want to do with it it just goes where it's supposed to with high-quality materials and stuff right on

now the sheath is a different story I got quite a few negatives on the sheet but I just want to tell you guys not because I have negatives on the sheath that this brings down Bark River or a Casey concerning their knives I mean they are top quality knives I've owned many Bark River knives never been disappointed and this is my first a Casey and being that's made by bark River

it's all good okay I'm not bringing those down bark River is one of my favorite companies so please don't destroy their names because of what I'm about to say now I've watched quite a few videos about this sheath and it seems like no one is talking about it but if you buy this knife now I don't know how much this knife is worth I got it from a trade but if you do buy this knife I want to tell you about the sheath

now there's two positives about this sheet okay give you a quick look here the first positive it's made like a well let's call it a pancake or you can put your knife either for left-handed or right-handed which I find really really cool because there's always a problem concerning your left-handed people and sheath there's not many sheets they're available especially in production knives but this one there's no problem you can buy a knife and you will have you have either choices the second thing that's pretty cool I've never seen on the sheath is the magnet there's a magnet in it okay you can see the square here or the magnet is so it holds the sheath see how strong it is so being that this will eventually this will eventually soften up like most chic it will not come out because the what we call the magnet will hold it so those are the two positive thoughts for me concerning this sheath now a few negatives and I understand these are production knives and you know these companies what they want to do is to make the best quality knives with you know quality materials and keep it at a low cost so that people can afford them so they don't put too much money on the sheath I understand that but this one here I don't know I mean if I I don't know how much of mine that knife is it's got to be at least 200 bucks 200 US I'd say I expect a sheath that will work fairly well and that will look good too if I ask a custom maker to make me a knife that's you know and pretty high-quality I know that I'll receive a nice sheath again I repeat myself that is not just functional but look nice to look at so that's why this one here first of all if you look at the back of this to me I know that you won't see it that looks like a mess now you don't see it on the camera but nothing is equal here either the top this is long and then it becomes short look at the stitching okay something else the inside here I hope I'll be able to show you this

you see all the blue see that mean car and seem to there you see all the blue the finishing on this is really not good and plus there is this thing I'm glues like nothing if I'm not careful it's going to unglue on both sides I understand that this will hold it up and the stitching will hold it up but you know you pay 200 bucks for something you want to look half decent and pretty strong you know it's just anyway to me I think it should be better now the knife let me put it in now this is how the knife flows into the sheath okay now this was made this way so it would never come out of there you would not lose it also I'm not sure about the idea this being so deep but I think the thought of you know usually a knife what I like is about an inch you know about an inch out of the sheath so it's easy to grab but they didn't want any struggles with that like branches hooking up on them and all that but you know what I do a lot of bushwhacking and all my knives and that's never an issue so I don't think that's needed because what it does it's hard to get you know it's hard to get this out of there so you have to have a lanyard also the back here is made for horizontal carry and vertical carry now vertical carry this way look how high that brings up your knife this is on your belt

excuse me right here your belt is here so you got this much you know poking your side I personally don't like that and it will fit an inch and 3/4 about a belt so a 2 inches forget it now I understand that it's high because you need to bring this a little bit lower so it can be used horizontally you know so it doesn't dangle all over the place and it's at a certain degree where it it rides well on your belt that's why they brought it down lower I understand that but the problem is if I'd want to use it horizontally I couldn't look at the space there now between the stitching here and there it's about about an inch a little over an inch and a half but then you've got this part here it is stitched there it's glued right up to here so I mean unless you use a rope it's impossible to put a belt so that's pretty useless ok so something else now this doesn't bother me too much but maybe it would bother you so I'd rather say it there's no drainage hole at all I just want to say it so there's like also too much this is made to be a compact forest knife right lightweight well that there's just also too much sheath for the knife because it doesn't make it that functional and that's just my humble opinion ok don't don't take it for maybe this kind of thing doesn't bother you but I'm just telling you things that bother me especially when you pay 200 US dollars for a knife so all these little tiny things that I've mentioned what I would do to make this she's a little bit more functional I would keep it simple okay first of all the idea I would keep the same idea you know for the left and right this is perfect I would keep the magnet there no problem and you know maybe a AKC who doesn't really matter what I say that's okay I'm just giving you some thoughts here but I would leave it at least an inch sticking out so it's easy to take out and at the same time like your blade is up to here so it's still magnetized it'll still do the same work I would make it a little nicer make the leather come right up to here and I would take the rest off like an inch and a half down here you don't need this would be the end of it like this and in the back I would just forget about this and just create a nice simple belt loop a vertical loop and you know you bring it up here and I'd put it at least two inches because some people have two inch belts and that way well it wouldn't ride high it would ride normal and you could grab it easily but you'd still have that same effect a great idea about you know keeping your nice safe with this magnet and the left hand and right hand carry so my ten cents on this so that being said I can't carry that thing so I had the f1 you know these f1 belt sheets so I decided to try and use it now of course this knife is not as wide as high as the f1 and it's not as thick or anyway it it would move this way and that way in the sheath but now it's nice and tight even if I take a snap off and I might camp you know snap it back in the back it's not it it's tight it's not tight tight but it's got enough friction for me to just slide it in and doesn't move all I did is right oops you probably won't be able to see that let's see let's start is it on that side mmm see right there on this side there's a leather a piece of leather that I put in on the plastic and it's in there by friction it's in there tight so this way it doesn't move this way okay and at the top well good old duct tape there's about six layers of duct tape stuck at the top here so it wouldn't move this way so I can put it in put it in no loose ends and as I travel I snap it and this makes this like I mean very lightweight you don't even know it's there

because let me be honest with you and I'm pretty sure everyone will agree when you pay a two hundred dollar knife u.s. you know especially for us Canadians I really hate to have to have another sheath made for it I really do now I won't have to because I'll be carrying it in this one because I don't I have the leather the other leather seats for the f1 so I'm going to be able to manage it and I'm going to keep them this one good but someone that doesn't have any extra sheets and as a hard time carrying the other one has to have a 60 $70 sheath plus you know because you have a good knife you want a good chief I don't think that's fair but that could be really fixed just by doing the small little details that I just said but anyway just my thoughts it's just such a pleasure to use now I can't give you any little tiny details of how it works you just have going to have to trust me because everything is so wet and I need to get into a dry piece of wood and you know how damp how damp wood causes friction and all that so I'm just going to give a little this thing is just so much fun to use the Snipe design from a KC is a real pleasure it's just man it's I don't know what to say it's just a pleasure to use the spine is not too sharp which I like sharp enough to strike your fare rod probably but you know I'm not a big kind of that anyway look at even though this thing is really damp I'm going through this wood now this is a spruce not the softest of woods as part of the soft woods but not the softest look at this it's crazy crazy fun to you this try and go slow but I'm really enjoying this grind and the feeling of it the only thing is you know so far it's good you know why it's not bothering me here so much as a push cut because it slices so well it's when the knife is not well made or not sharp enough that it you'll be pushing you know you push this way and you're forcing each time so each time you force it gives a pressure point here and this hurts but the more I use it I mean it's not even pushing here at all because such a pleasure it slices like try and go deeper you know the wider you take the more and still it's not it's good so I'm even more impressed now I'm using it like this so forget what I said about because it's thin it hurts here it's not going to be happening of course you got to keep your knife sharp that I could play with this knife all day it's so much fun so anyway you'll be seeing you'll be probably seeing a lot more of this knife in the future yeah no hotspots the only place that is hurting is because of my ring right here but no hot spots you know well-designed knife thumbs up for a Casey [Applause]

a lot of fun to use alright so I'll show it one last time see the size of it so we don't have the best light to show you but I mean a nice little treasure design are taken from the Skookum bush tool more Skowronski but to be a compact knife see see how small and compact it is awesome

very well done from a KC but there needs to be some improvement on the sheath that's only my opinion well well well lookie here what I found finally after three and a half hours find a second tree with decent ones this time it's on a dead Graber some nice-sized ones there that are now I try and get to that one up there but there's going to be some nice chunks of a Madhu behind that I can see in the corner there yes very nice I'm happy so do you think you guys think I have enough it's overflowing I'm done can't even close the cover of my a verse AK but I'll make it work okay so I hope you guys like this little hike adventure mixed video I guess I don't know what to call this one but I had a lot of fun now I have to get out I'll still keep my eyes open just in case ha
