the ex is back project created by a scope near most of you know him very well and by the way a skull great excellent project that's need to see those videos and need to see also these acts is being used now scope create this project as he says very well in this video because in the bush rap community it seems like we are seeing more and more people using the axe and he's absolutely right I think that the main reason why is that people are starting to use them and and seeing how valuable the acts can be in the bush now the videos is you know all kinds of videos that he's looking for what he wants us to do is you know Shore show our axes and talk a little bit about them and also if possible you know to show what you can do with it with the ex it could be anything it could be you know felling splitting sharpening whatever you have in mind so just before I start showing you a few of my axes I encourage you guys to join us in this all you need to do is go to this main page the videos right there take a look at it and if you have an axe or to talk about it tell people while you like it maybe work with it a bit and send it as a video response I think this is a great project that you can share your you're not just your knowledge but your tools alright so the first acts i'm going to show you guys and you've seen a lot of my videos is this old ax here now I know the handle has to be changed in the head as well as to be worked on but I just simply love this X what i use this ax for here is mainly to split some soft wood at home you know just for campfires and such but what I like about this ax it's wide i'd say it's around four inches of the cutting edge and it's very very thin it's got it's a very thin blade as you can see and what I like about thin blades well one thing it's easily sharpened if you take just for example knives thinner blades are a lot easier to sharpen than the thicker ones for me anyway well I shouldn't say easier but it doesn't take as long to sharpen it I love the weight of it this ax is just simply perfect for soft wood and i know i got some work to do own it this was here when i bought the home and i've been using it ever since it's been damaged and all but i can work on it some other time all right let me show you this one here this is what i call the big daddy my big daddy this is main machine made in canada five inches the cutting edge it's got a 36 inch handle it's got a grip I don't know what kind of coating it is but you truly need it because this is heavy I know how much of ways but it's really heavy just show you real close there good strong handle I know if it's Hickory but it's excellent made in Canada now what I mainly use this x 4 is splitting some hardwood at home again just for a campfire now hardwood we know is a lot harder to split and you need a heavier weapon to be able to split it effectively alright another axe that you've seen is this one this is the one I carry on the bush pretty much all the time with me this is the small forest acts by grants furs and Brooks now what I love about this X it's not just the size I mean it fits in the pack perfectly but the wait now when you have quality steel it's not as heavy as your cheaper steel and this for the size is very lightweight and also those that own these being a good steel it's easily sharpened and keeps an edge a lot longer than any other state I just love this axe and if ever I get some more money saved up I'm gonna get the next to this one

I'll just give you a little look at it love it this one too has a thin thin blade easier to sharpen all right a couple of hatchets have you seen this in my older videos this is the 757 made from buck this is my wife's it's a hatchet does the work of a hatchet it's not an axe but it's a great little tool very lightweight if I believe I think it's under a pound not sure anymore this is very lightweight again the blade is very sharp when you get it and easily sharp show you quick and it's lightweight because it's got a hollow handle know even though it has a hollow handle if you use it right if you never hit it here and right on the blade I mean this guy has been through all kinds of stuff and it never let me go right and even got a site to hammer stuff you can even use the whole handle you know to fill it up with some stuff alright last one usually we say the last but not least uh this time I'm going to say the last and least this is a hatchet I bought about off about a year and a half ago I think I borrowed in walmart i paid ten bucks for it you know how the saying goes you get what you pay for and you really get what you pay for now I have to say that this is really a piece of junk now don't get me wrong if this is the only tool you have is the best you got but if you're if you weren't already sorry about that guys my battery just gave up on me so like I was saying if you do plan on buying a cheap hatchet you know at walmart for 10 bucks you know for around the house or anything uh why don't you just don't do that and you know add another twenty bucks and get yourself you know either a buck 757 or you know fiskars has some decent hatchets too and you'll really get for your money this is you're gonna regret this now I've had this for about a year I think it's heavy I mean it's practically almost the same weight as the grants version Brooks maybe just a little bit line not much it's got a you know fiberglass handle the steel is really cheap very hard to sharp and doesn't keep an inch at all you know steel is like cheap stainless steel or something anyway it's just a suggestion so now what I'm gonna do I've got two older videos you see me use an axe and I had some viewer video request to repost them so I decided to put them together the next scene you're going to see me sharpen an X and it's I believe it's the buck one now I sharpen it with a Japanese water stone and I know we don't have that luxury when we're in the bush but it's basically the same thing guys hard sharp how to sharpen it whatever sharpening stone you have use it and could be a file whatever and after that you're going to see another video of me splitting a little bit of wood this winter for a campfire and enjoying a good meal so I hope you enjoyed this thanks for watching Barton's I was asked to show how I sharpen my axes now nowadays there's all kinds of ways techniques there's all kinds of files and wat nuts to sharpen an ex but i'm going to show you the way that i was taught i was taught when I was ya boy by one of my uncles and I've always stick with that method and you know it works for me and I know there's all kinds of other methods out there but I'm just answering the request that my subscribers asked me i'm going to show you two ways of sharpening in acts with two different sharpening stones now as for my knives i will use the japanese whetstone for my axes it's the same combo grit the 6,000 the 1006 aizen right now i'm using the 6,000 sorry be 1,000 and the ax or the hatchet that i'm going to sharpen today is a buck 757 this is my wife's and it's in dear need of being sharpened believe me I've been letting this one go having sharpened this one in a year at least it's very dull now the way that I was taught to sharpen an ax for me is always in a circular motion now I know there's all kinds of other ways I understand that when you sharpen an ax you'll go in circular motions obviously you want to get the right angle on it as for my knives i use my fingers I get the right grime

but because it doesn't fit completely on the stone when you do it this way what you're going to have to do is as you go in circular motions working on this part here you're going to have to tilt see I tilt this end here as you're going in circular motions and do the same thing with the other end here always keeping the same anyways I'll give you an example and you'll see what I mean so important get the right angle right of your blade the edge here and you go in circular motions this is a thousand grid all right tilt keeping the same angle all the time you work everywhere on the blade as he go now you do this on both sides all right the two sides you do evenly on both sides and I'll continue working on this because it's going to be boring for you and I'll show you the finishing touch they do with the Japanese would stop right all right guys I've done with I'm done with my thousand grit I mean it took me baby five minutes and this thing is already very sharp right now a nice little trick to see if you're working on the right angle you're going to see exactly where you're working by that but he called the shine of the blade where you're shining it up and if you see it's nice and even that means you're working on the right angle now just to finish it up all right just to refine the blade to make sure that it stays sharp I'm going to use the 6000 grit and do the exact same thing that you done with a thousand grid but this time I'm going to go just gently all right i'm not trying to sharpen it right now I'm just you know refining it so you do the same thing using your fingers right get the right angle and you just go gently this time so I'm going to do this finish it up and show you what I'm done you do that on both sides all the time same as a knife alright guys i'm finished i just finished the 6000 grit if you want if you wish you can you know hold it down just in case there's any imperfections or still some burrows left you know and after that you're done it's finished all right oh I wasn't gonna do this I didn't bring any paper with me are you trying to find something that was pretty dumb oh I hear the beaches here and the garbage all right let's just see a little bit here if this cuts right okay I just want to tell you something all right especially with an axe we see all these videos you know we make the test cutting paper whatever uh especially for an axe guys if you sharpen your axe and you make a test cutting the paper and it doesn't work let me tell you one thing it doesn't mean that your ex is not sharp alright so i'll just show you that next method i was wanting to show you with the other another sharpening stone so stay tuned alright guys i'm going to show you a second way of sharpening your your racks this time we're going to be using a different stone I've had this for years I don't know how what market is or anything about it but it's a oil stone you can use it either with the oil or dry as it is got medium grip grip grit sorry and fine grit here i'll be using an old ex that was here when i bought the house I've used it maybe twice handles all busted up and but this thing is extremely dull it I mean it's pretty much useless so i'm going to work a little bit on this to show you how you can sharpen annex a second way now if you have a vise obviously it'd be best you know we just put your acts on the vice and do it I don't have a vice so I'll just show you how to do it this way so first thing you want to do is wear gloves because the other method you have control over the blade and everything there's hardly any danger this time your hand is going to be playing around the edge so you want to wear gloves for protection right second thing now put your hand to make sure that your blade is straight now I know somebody will be tempted to put something under here to keep you know to help him from moving like this but I suggest that you don't do that because if you're a little bit higher or lower as as you sharpen your aunt you'll have a wrong angle and you don't want that so just keep your hand there and just put you know keep some pressure if you see your hand going or the blade going like this as you sharpen your pushing way too hard on your stone right look let the stone do the job just with just with a gentle pressure and you're going to go in the circles up and down the blade alright so I'll use the medium grit here just to show you and you want to keep your address convicts as possible right let's get in the goal and down the road they're all kind of the niche this blade would lead a sander but I just you should Eric should never be this damage anyway right you can see as you go that you're on the right angle where you see the metal shining so you do the same thing on the other side you know it doesn't take much time the sharpening acts

form a good sharp enough to be very useful

all right now I'll use fine grit I'm going fast doing this you know that it's kind of boring for you guys I understand but you'll see it doesn't take much to get this sharp enough for it to be useful now you do it with the fine up and down circular motion the other side all right I believe it or not it didn't take much time all right this thing was very dull and I mean you can sharpen it more if you wish but we'll just check it out and see if it's just back this up here see if it's useful see if we can make some feather sticks or that's very well makes nice little curls obviously this is a heavy acts so it's harder to control but from doll to nothing to this I mean in no time it shapes not so bad but it was just to show you how you can sharpen it I just hope it was helpful for you guys that asked I know there's different techniques so I'll just tell you look just a minute sorry about that it you know it was very extremely dull and about no time at all you can bring it enough to make little shavings thin shavings so that tells me that it's pretty sharp and I can use it even if it didn't take me long all right all right guys just one last thing you know you might be watching someone teaching you a technique on sharpening and acts or sharpening a knife and maybe someone close to you or like you're watching right now and you go back home or your home and you try it out and you see that it doesn't work now let me tell you just one thing it's normal right it could happen when I was first taught how to sharpen an axe or sharpen knives you know I went back home and I tried it and it wasn't even close to being sharp as the way the guy showed me or the way my uncle showed me not even close and I was wondering that technique is no good there's one thing you got to remember technique can be taught all right but scales can't you gotta develop your skills so what you have to do choose a technique it doesn't have to be this one choose a technique that best fits you and have at it practice all the time that technique and you'll see your skills will develop using the technique and it'll come all together someday and you'll see that your knives and your axes are nice and sharp all right now I'm far from being an expert in sharpening knives or sharpening axes I mean I'm better than I used to but I'm still not satisfied with with my sharpening I wanted to get even better you know I want to consider myself always a student because if I start considering myself anything else I stop learning and I don't want that to happen so I hope these little tips were helpful to you and again I appreciate you guys thanks for watching this is my friend bush chef Barton's by I got a huge craving for roasted meat roasted from a fire now I've marinated some meat last night and it's ready to be cooked and i thought i'd share that with you guys and at the same time I want to tease one of my good friends out there mr. Tom from the real survival class and a few others as well why not but first thing I have a lot of work to do and that's called shoveling I got my fire pit there and my axe is somewhere in there to my old ax be a lot of work but to me it's well worth it I can't wait anymore it's been too long

all right now that the fire settle down a little bit I'm going to put my meat now whenever you cook any meat over a fire it's always best to wait you know when once you have some coals now I'm not quite at the coals yet but I'm pretty I'm pretty close and I'm not right on top of the fire all right I'm just getting the heat on the side and a little bit of smoky flavor whatever you do cook some meat you know wait till your tinder and your kindling is burnt out because that's where you get the maximum of soot just wait till your fuel is cut a little bit and if you're in a hurry go ahead and cook your meat but again that way it won't kill you okay it's just it'll taste a lot better it's a slow cooking it doesn't burn your meat it keeps the flavor and the same time you get that smoky flavor around it all right while the meat is cooking and my water is slowly getting hot just want to give a little you know a few tips on auntie what we call the Bushman's tea now I've tasted pretty much everything that exists in the needle world parties and I can tell you for me my preference is the pine now we have the red pine here and there and the white pine and more specifically the white pine if you want to know the difference between the two its and the needles the white pine is going to be a very very soft soft needle to it and the red one will be stiff now between the pine and the balsam fir and the Spruce the pint is my personal favorite because it's got a very light taste to it and it's something that I can really say that I love to drink now when it comes to spruce tea or balsam fir the taste is a little bit stronger a little bit bitter and not as good now what I have here is spruce but there's one thing we have to realize between those needles is this especially the balsam fir the balsam fir has the most of vitamin C and sugar than any other needle trees you can use the same amount of balsam fir needles and put them in a pot and it's going to give you more vitamin C and more sugar than the rest of the the other needles combined now the taste is a little bit different it's stronger as I said but it's better for your ball it's better for you okay you know when the doctors say

uh whenever it tastes bad that means it's the best for you well in this case that's what it is now just a few tips concerning how to do this now I know you know when we don't have time we just take the needles and throw it in the boiling water that's fine I mean it works but I just want to make you realize something else when you do that okay when you do throw the needles into boiling water what it's going to do is first of all you see this needle here it's going to cook it real hard now when it cooks it real hard is going to stop stop it from you know getting all the essence that you need and if you do get some in boiling water another problem is that all the good stuff the vitamin C and sugar will evaporate with the vapor the steam okay but there still some in it now one good way of doing it all right it doesn't matter what needles you got is boil your water and whatever it is you got you just cut them all right it doesn't have to be in small small chunks but just cut them a little bit now this way I'll explain why you see all the juices are that came out here and see a little bit on the knife now this way when you do it like that the essence is going to come out right away as soon as you put in the water now you don't want to put this in boiling water you want to take your water off of the fire wait for it to settle and add the pine needles or whatever needles you got into the water and let it sit for about two to five minutes now that way you're going to get all the essence out of these things at once it's cut like that so that's one good way of doing it now again if you think of a tea bag egg you don't boil water and throw the tea bag into the boiling water all right you boil your water you put in your cup then you put the tea bag and you wait it's the same process with with nature okay it doesn't change now again I know what about this amount is good enough for the amount of water i have i mean i still like this even though it's stronger but I'm you know I do it lighter and it's just like a teabag you if you leave it longer it's going to taste stronger so you put it in all right wait two minutes that's good enough for you dump it in in your in your cup so I hope this was a little informative to you I'm going to wait for the water to boil i'm going to show you the essence what I'm talking about alright guys now the my water has boiled alright see the steam coming out so once it's boy let's settle a little bit take the cover off now it's time to dump all the needles in there that you cut up okay I'm just showing you away guys you know that you'll get the most effective it doesn't mean that this is the only way I'm just showing you a very effective way where you can get the most of the needle especially the survival situation when you know this you want to get you want to make this as strong as you can this way so you extract everything you can now what I'm going to do I'm going to leave it sit for about 23 minutes and I'll come back and I'll show you what I mean by the essence that came out all right so the tea is ready I was telling you that I was wanting to show you the essence that you look for and if you can see in the camera you see those oily spots there that's what that's what you need to have to extract everything see that that's the good stuff that's what you want in your body so anyway what you can do next is you can strain it if you want alright if you don't like to eat these little things but I mean there's no problem even if you do chew a few it won't kill you this is good stuff I'm telling you and you see always you see the essence right in the cup there look that good stuff all right all right enough talking tom this is for you see that guy's just a little bit burnt but this guy is ready like the burnt taste anyway oh of course I gotta gotta tease you guys a bit all this work for this lovely piece of meat right here mmm this is really incredible look I'll Turner it is it just rips hmm I had enough of talking right now I'm heating ma'am
