it's gonna be a different video what I usually do we're going to talk a little bit about carving I think it's something that a lot of people are afraid to try it out in reality what carving does to me it just relaxes me you know after a typical hard day's work got a little bit of free time get my tools out and start carving now this is this is the knight instance sorry I'm carving out a spoon two things I love about carving

not only relaxes me but it's really cheap the wood is free and well let me show you that this is pretty much all you need a spoon knife this one's from as more as a moral Frost sweet works great perfect size for what I do anyway about around 20 bucks and another little tool you should have is just a makeshift knife little small you know carving knife not too big these are the two only things you need as I said before in other videos you need the right tools for the right job and you're gonna have fun spoon knife by the way nd I have to tell you I love your sheath thank you very much

look better than what I can do I have no talent whatsoever with leather but anyway this is the spoon I'm carving right now it still needs a little bit of work on the handle this is birch more specifically the graver you know that type of bird that a lot of people mistake as the poplar the white birch that has doesn't shed any bark at all this is it and even for a birch hardwood tree it's it's pretty soft and softer than your typical birch carves well now I'm wanting to carve now after this one piece of maple sugar tree maintenance now this is very hard stuff but I'll make it good spoon will be tough to carve but that spoon will last a long time so what I'm gonna do obviously I won't I won't you know leave the video running it's gonna be long but I truly suggest and you get into carving it's a lot of fun I'm no expert not even close I don't even have talent for this you should have seen my first boobs and this is far from being nice too but I know I'm getting better even at the beginning when I made my spoons you know I believe it roughed out I'd use it two three times and throw in the fire now I try and put a little bit more pride into it like right now I still have some fine-tuning to do but I take time to sand it and I try and make a little personal touch to it and it's a lot of fun so I want to finish this off before sanding and when I start getting into this I'll put the video back on now to start to make the rough part you know you start with a large knife or a small axe hatchet that all you need is those two tools so as soon as I'm there and I'll open that back up for you all right

think I'm pretty well then roughing with this now if you want to sand what you want to do is try and really finish it as much as you can with your knife you know it's nice and smooth so you don't have to sand for 20 days but for now this is gonna be the rough spoon all right

all right now let's talk some more starting from the beginning find yourself a piece nice dry piece and what you can do what most people you can make it longer your piece so when you do carve your bowl in you have a PA put a place to grab you know so you can carve if you make it too close and you have no place to grab if you want to do it that way that's fine I don't do it that way I used to but I just find it I just rather do it this way without having a longer piece if you want to start with you can draw with a pencil or a pen whatever the shape of what the spoon you want you know and try and carve around it the bowl now a lot of people try and make the bowl deep but actually it doesn't have to be deep just take a look at your normal spoon at home it's not really deep I used to make mine too deep and as one of my friends said you can hardly put the spoon in your mouth this one is not so deep right it's about three sixteenths maybe in the deepest part it's not really deep it's good enough you don't want to make it too narrow or too wide you know has to go in your mouth and comfortably and you won the end here the edge to be thin not too thick but anyway that's all gonna come when yet it's different tasting so first thing I look for is I'm gonna make the bowl on this side and ya make the bowl on this side so what I do you can use a little hatchet and take chunks off right size of the handle or you can use a knife now this is tough wood so just slowly take some off this is a lot tougher than the birch we tell you that but it's gonna be worth it though the end product is going to be worth it I like to use the mark 1 for this because it doesn't because of the flat grind it doesn't tend to want to go in too much and then all of a sudden poke I have a big piece off so that's what I like about it something else as you saw I like to keep them fairly short it's about 6 inches long not more than that hey you know you don't need I like a short because it's easier to pack you don't need unless you're making a mixing spoon but a kneading spoon you don't need to do that it's just starting to shape up for the handle so let me continue with this and when I'm up to the bold part here I'll turn that back on stay tuned the first thing you want to do Wow first thing on it is I don't want to tell you what to do I'm telling you what I do is to make it a street as you can or whatever shape you wanted it to be you know roughly because this thing was twisting like this and it was twisting like this so I have to try and bring it a little bit straight there's still some missing here a little bit but they'll be fine

and it's not so bad that way either now my rough part is pretty much done I don't want to go any deeper than that I want to start working on the bowl yeah as you see it's going to be a little bit longer I always leave a little bit longer so I have place to work if ever I make some mistakes okay

now for the spoon the spoon for the bowl I always start at the back going up the shape I want and when you use a spoon knife you do not want to try and take too much off at a time just a little bit of time what I do is I shape my you know my circumference of what I want and then I start digging digging digging and digging until I'm happy with it that's the little bit of the time and I would suggest also if you're starting not to start with a very hard would start with something softer you know it'll be easier for you and it also teaches a little bit easier how to use your knife or spoon knife another knives too so I slowly go around where I want my bowl to be when you carve one thing I learned if you want to have fun doing it are you talking back at me gosh sometimes I swear it froze fuck at us so a secret of carving well see your carving what I think is patience take your time if you don't take your time you're gonna if you take too much wood you can't have any just take your time if you get tired of it put it aside and get back at it another day so let me just carve out the bowl and I'll see you next time like in an hour or so I know pretty much the shape of my bowl so I'm just slowly going round it bring it down evenly no guys when you have the right tools it's a lot more fun and all those guys out there to make try and make a spoon with just a knife and burn the bowl I've been there done that and well I don't have to I won't do it again now if you don't have a choice and you're stuck out there go ahead but I do have a choice and I'm sure you do too got the right tools it'll be a lot more fun for you all right that's pretty much the shape anyway I'm gonna want it all I need to do now is to remember a little bit at a time goes a long way

nice even strokes okay I'll give you a rough Oh so this is pretty much the shape I'm going to want my bowl right I can take care of the outside with my other night that's not a problem well this warning is you know a little bit of an oval type of shape and I still need to dig a little bit more once that's done I'm gonna start carving here right the size a little bit and I'll show you how to take this off well what I do you know I'm talking as if I know what I'm doing but anyway what I like to do you know I don't like to take a saw and start taking the big biggest piece off I'm afraid for this you know make crack so I just take my time and also I would suggest some people will carve with Greenwood

you know there's a little debate I rather a carve a Greenwood and dry wood well I rather carve with dry wood because with Greenwood you start carving it's all nice and when it once it's done it dries up hit me crack this way I know if it's gonna crack or not this can't get any drier than it is and I know there's no cracks anywhere so I know I'm not carving for nothing so let me continue this I'll talk to you guys later

all right the roof part of the ball is pretty much done and you know we can even make some frost rain some people say your hardwood can't do it but you can take a little bit off and your knife is sharp enough okay so with the outside outside I'll be I'll be fixing that later on so this is the ball there's a few mistakes here there's one here and this is not round enough but I can take care of that later so now I want to take this part off I'm going to hold this knife here that's like the Jets lever grip and all I do is go around it just make sure you know where you're going I slowly go around it like that following the edge that's taking a little bit off at the time making sure oh this is gonna be a nice grain of wood I know if you can see this but probably not anyway this is actually a gift for my wife Josie don't tell her of course they always get the best wood the best school so slowly but surely just get around it not too much at a time again remember patients and their investments here

and you just go slowly around like this right up to the other side right when I met this point I won't use the chest over like this good the other way right that was no danger my even though a blade is towards me I still turned my seat so I can go this way like that this way I can see better what I'm taking off now I remember a spoon there's always there's two circles or two round parts there's like this and there's like this so that's why way you saw my piece at the beginning a round piece split well that helps me because it guides me of course there's still a lot to take off and to round off but it still gives you a kind of a guide anyway there's still the top to do a little bit alright this is rough but starting to turn into shape a little bit so keep on yeah

so let me just finish this and and I'm done

this part here I'm going to start working on my handle part I need to bring I want to keep this part here flat what I want to take off is on both sides and a little bit under over here I need to dig in a little bit more so that's what I'm going to be working on how don't worry using the knife this way is perfectly fine even though it doesn't look like it is fine someday I'm gonna make a video about knife safety and the reality of it showing people who are just starting and those who are using the knife but don't come out and really say what's happening I remember who was it I think it was dusty musta made a video on using a certain technique for carving and when you look at it it looks dangerous you know pulling the knife towards you and I'm sure if he wouldn't have explained it well as he did he would have had a whole bunch of comments telling him it was dangerous how he used his knife but how he used it was perfectly used someday I'm gonna do with that I guess all right so now I'm trying to get the shape like this as well and I'm taking a little bit off at a time everywhere

try and make it as round as I can hey now don't look at this here it's like this now I'm gonna take a whole bunch off still this has to be thinned out up to here just leave a little belly dig in here and then start working on my handle and then do the finishing touches before sanding so keep you guys posted all right I think it's I'm done for today anyway

because it's freezing now I got a mess to pick up down here it's why it's nice to do this in the bush oh just you tired all right so that's where I'm at now I've still got a lot of work on the handle it's easiest part what I work my bowl a little bit more i digged it a little bit more from the inside and you see there's a knot here I tried to stay inside the knot so would cause many problems I still need to do a little bit exterior but I still need to take some off in the back here you know take some off going like this a little bit and from the bowl on the outside bowl so next time I come out keep on working on this film it this one here is ready to be sanded and anyway once everything is done you'll see at the end the finishing product that's pretty amazing when you think about it from where it starts you know around there you go it starts from this piece of maple and this piece can turn like that now split a lot of work but again take your time and you know what if you can afford 20 bucks a little bit of time patience just jump in the water and try it and people think that yes of course it helps a spoon knife you know what to make the spoon but if you've never used one you gotta learn how to use one you won't get good at it the first time so I thought when I started using a spoon not at all it's gonna be easy it doesn't quite work that way once you do you won't regret it see in the next video bye well I decided to start sanding this obviously as you can very well see I am not equipped and doing everything in the house but this is what I've sanded so far now there's some mistakes I'll show you a little bit later there but still need to send a little bit more down here see here it's not quite and I still need the sender s to this handle now what I use a sandpaper especially for hard wood I'll use three types of grits that's what I use is a tea I'll do all the rough with the a tea then I'll jump to 180 and 220 220 I'll bring it I know there's not much difference between 180 and 220 but there's enough difference that it shows because you want this to be really smooth you know this is going in your mouth so so that's where it is so far

all right this is the finished product all the sanding is done no I'll need to do is personalize it a bit and oil it what I use is just your typical mineral oil you have no problems with that anything becoming rancid or stuff you could use up linseed oil but I have a hard time finding the pure linseed oil most linseed oil check on your bottles make sure they have most of them have now what do you call that anyway some thinners and stuff and poisonous poison thinner I guess is it work so this is it all nice and soft yeah so now time to finish it up completely and I'll be working on the other one don't go away personalizing it now by looking at it I know my wife Josie and she's gonna say I want this one because it looks more feminine before the other one is done but the other one may be a little bit bigger when I'm finished but anyway it's nothing much it's just I just added a little you know some I burnt in some some branches there just to personalize it make it unique make it hers her own nothing fancy I have no talent and drawing or anything I don't even know if this looks like branches but anyway so that's what it looks like the next thing that I do don't move I'm gonna lower you a little bit okay go back to the garbage sorry it's not okay the next thing I'm going to do is this is what I use as oil its mineral oil you can get this at the pharmacy it's good for it selects what set laxative sorry and topical skill amoliant skin amoliant getting tired ah so this is what I use you'll won't have any problems with this now the first time you do coat your your wooden stuff it's best to put you know a few thin coats at a time maybe three and after that you just put you know one coat every time you wash your spoons now when you do wash any spoons anything made out of wood it's best to just wash it even if it's cups wash it just with hot water because you never know whose soap and the soap goes into your spoon you won't like it anymore so what I do is I just just pour a little bit in my hand all I'm gonna do this

make sure it goes in nice they should I like the spoon you don't want too much oil you know we're flowing if you see there's too much excess take it off you want this to dry out put a few more and you'll be fine so what I'm gonna do I'm not going to show the process of the other of my other spoon you guys know what I was doing and you know you get the point I'm pretty sure but I'll still show you the the finished product when I'm done so don't go away I'll be with you in a couple of days thanks for watching this is my trip around parts bye alright so I made my little design nothing much just a little little tiny arrow remember guys I can't draw so don't laugh too much at me or I'll have to spoon you you just do that any kind of little design and what I use is your old el cheapo burner here that we've had for so many years and you take your time and I have to draw it first because my hand is really not steady enough for this kind of stuff so let's start burning now I'm not gonna stop the video so if you find this too long you can fast forward it was things yeah give it time to burn you have to move at the same time but slowly making sure see a little mistake it is done okay now I understand that mmm where it's burnt when you oil up the oil won't go into where it's burnt but it's not a big thing for me it's not like these things will be soaked in water and if you do designs you know make sure you don't do any designs where the bowl is you know the higher inside because it won't be comfortable for your mouth when you do eat whoa we keep on here use a pencil because I don't always follow the line exactly after that I can just erase it sometimes it's a little tricky working on round surfaces like this okay she's not perfect but no this is the trickiest part does its round both ways

here is the highest price stay

another little mistake I'm stop shrieking you

yeah

all right really not perfect but that's what it's going to be okay good enough now if you see that you've put some you know you can resend this if you want but I don't find that I need to so this is the little arrow and this little design here and screw it up a little bit over here but anyway get the point now next step like the other one oil three coats my first coat you see the nice grain and this one know if you can see it well grain want to focus you you see

well this is a test anyway I think I've I think I'm gonna play with this top here I do something because it really doesn't look that great but anyway you guys get the point two spoons now you might be saying and looking at these and saying well I can't do this well think again because you are wrong if I can do this anybody good I'm telling you right away you know just make the first step and get into it then you're gonna enjoy it and you're gonna make mistakes like this here is a big mistake for me but I'm gonna do something here to change that so hope you guys appreciated this little spoon carving video hope it wasn't too long and I hope some of you guys try it you won't regret it thanks for watching this is my foolish rap parts bye
