all right so if you guys remember in one of my previous videos I was wanting to take the if you see it probably not huh there you see it better I see a little shiny line that's the secondary bevel on this side you see it's right there okay it's really wide on that side that is why on the other side now I'm wanting to take this off because I love to strut my knives I just take care of my knife sharpen them by stropping and doing it this way it just drops that secondary bevel and not my knife as a whole so that is my the main video for today just before I want to try and explain to you as simply as I can especially those that are beginning in this and want to understand how you know why we sharpen knives in the sense we sharpen with the stone and then at least drop them why we do that now I have no expert okay that I'm just gonna tell you what I think I know and I know there's a lot of knife makers watching me right now so if I'm doing anything wrong and I mean saying anything wrong and you just correct me so just kind of lift this up a little bit okay

so the cutting edge here we'll pretend is my fingers right there okay this cutting edge microscopically the edge is this so when it's not sharp anymore the middle taut and tends to separate and it's going to be round okay so that's why it's not sharp and it's not cutting so let's say you sharpen on a whatever stone

and you bring it sharp the first thing is going to do is going to sharpen these points okay they won't be around anymore they'll be nice and pointing but if you leave it that way and you use it because they're still separated microscopically of course it will not keep an edge long so you sharpen it you bring the points that way and then when you strop it or you use a very very fine finer stone it will tend to want to blend together or melt together right on what the right term is but they'll become one and that's why your cutting edge last a lot longer that's why you know you should do it that way so small explanation hoping that makes people understand a little bit better why we do what we do with a cutting edge okay so I use my normal water stone today I only have one combo a thousand and six thousand thousand six thousand under now to do this I mean if you have if you have the knowledge and you can use you know smaller grit stones I'll go a lot faster but that's all I have to work with so that's what I'm gonna use and you know I've done it before with this with my Gunny hunter with the 3d steel whoops a little bit dirty but anyway if you can see it you know what there's no more there's no more secondary bevel and when it's done this way all I need to do this struck my knives and it becomes razor sharp so the first thing I'm gonna do and by the way I am NOT claiming to be a virtual vise okay

not even close but I've learned quite a few things

about him not about him but from him when it comes to sharpening with water stones and especially these types of blades he's a big bark River fan it's his fault then I got this or anyway not completely all his fault but you got he makes great videos I'm sharpening this for sure he knows his stuff okay so the first thing I want to do is I want to you know I like to polish you know about I don't know maybe quarter to half an inch up I just finally looks I like it that way

so before I do sharpen anything I'm just gonna leave it a little bit flat and do the top part first this is just a little polishing

and then we'll get into the sharpening this I don't want to go too high it doesn't really matter actually some people don't like it you know I it doesn't my knives don't have to be perfect trust me as long as I can as long as I can strop it easily and I can see a nice shiny bottom even though it's not equal I don't care could polish the whole thing but I don't want to go up too much okay so I got the height that I want you know just a little bit of the polishing probably won't see them the camera anyway it's about oh it's hard to see about this I try and go a little bit mmm anyway it's time to sharpen it's time to work on the a secondary bevel now this 3v obviously you know it's logical it's super steel and it's harder it's a little harder to sharpen than your old one or you know probably your 82 but it's not that big of a deal I think it's worth it when you think about a retention of the edge how long it lasts a lot longer and it's stronger and I do believe concerning corrosion it's much better

so let me work on that for a little while so it's time to do that 6000 be back

we're getting there almost all God still needed a little bit on the edge here maybe at the tip this side is pretty nice too I know it doesn't look still some here okay let's check this out man well folks to the eyes it seems pretty much all gone or there's no microscope my tab and get it right the right light but anyway to the eyes it's all God it's always there's just a little bit left here on the on the right at the tip here but it's very difficult to get that know if you'll be able to see that see that tip there's a little bit left there okay so now we are going to do these six thousand

I've been using water stones for five years now let me tell you that I would not come back what I had before find that water stones first of all you're working with water which is a lot cleaner easier to clean and it's I find that water stones also will take just the right amount of steel to get to your cutting edge that you want you know it won't take too much off it slowly takes what you need to be taking off and gives a very smooth finish so I think we're done even with the 6000 now what I'm going to do is in the description of this video put the link to the blog I have concerning all this and where you can purchase it if this interests you so so far this is where we're at

right so now we need to do to finish it up drop it okay so what do me what I'm using for the strop now you can use any straw that you have at home I have I had quite a few but under virtual vise recommendation this is from the LT trading I just love it I just love it I love the length of it I love the how thick the leather it's not too thick it's just pretty much perfect for what my needs and for the compound obviously it's bark river compound I've got the black on one side and the white on the other one now the black I think is not mistaken about 3000 grit so there's no use me using that because my water stone was six thousand but the white is I think around twelve thousand so I will use the white finish polishing and finishing the cutting edge they're like I like okay dropping you just take your time go it about the same angle as when you're sharpening

just a little proof that it has taken maybe not perfectly the micro bevel I don't know I can't see without a micro scope but it's taking the strop a lot better okay that should be okay know if you'll be able to see this but anyway I'll give it a try yeah take a look up the shiny parts I mean the cutting edge took the strop nice it's nice and shiny well it's like that pretty much all the way the blade oh yeah check all the length of the blade see if it's okay I guess this is good enough

hmm okay was me I thought it was a little necklace yeah this is gonna cut perfect done a good job it took about oh I'd say roughly an hour and a half maybe of work and that's gonna be easy to maintain just push dropping sorry I don't have the right camera angle it doesn't seem to capture the light much but you see what I meant by the it's all shiny okay so this is the work on the blade
