okay so kinda windy sorry but it's a fair date today but still a lot of snow so we're gonna check out the campsite see how much shoveling I need to do to make myself happy [Music]

hi catch my breath so I decided to take the way of the field just because well the wind packs it takes out a lot of oxygen air bubbles in the snow so it's much easier to walk when I get into here see that's not the foot of the tree I'd say there's at least a foot there and there's like two more feet here so I will be thinking as I go hot Suns coming out okay see if you things like that you have to get rid of watch the branch so it doesn't come back in your face thank you now I know that my shovel looks like it's a mess in the back and it is but it's secure all right okay so according to my tripod at least three feet here close yeah there's nothing over the fire that can follow me and talk about clumps of snow

[Applause]

okay so first thing I need to dig [Applause]

well as I'm shoveling [Music]

we got to be kind of crazy you come out in the woods and shovel as if there's not enough shoveling in normal life whoo so I think it's pretty safe now for me to take my snow shoes off be a little bit more easier for me [Applause]

[Music]

okay I don't want that too often okay I see you

I think I'm at my fire pit but I got at least another foot here so that would make three feet to dig so and there's some beautiful ice because the warm temperatures we had in there February will make it work yeah all right should say I knew there would be a lot of ice and they're not gonna take time to break it all so I'm gonna need a hot fire that's why I want to get this out of the way cuz I don't want to catch on fire but if it does I don't care that thing is stuck like a foot deep in ice there and I can't of course I could cut it up but we'll see if it catches on fire who cares got plenty of poles here to make another 100 all the way down but make myself [Music]

now while I'm doing this I'm not sure if you can see anyway if you're planning on using snow as a barrier for wind for an overnight I catch my breath here I strongly suggest that you put some vows all over the top a good foot of it at the top and do three feet wide and maybe put a couple of poles on top because if you leave it this way and you're sleeping here let's say and a beautiful wind comes you're gonna wake up with six inches eight inches of snow on you by putting up the balls about a foot high three feet wide and some poles on it to keep the boughs down you should be okay so so I had a couple of poles here

over there deep in the snow hopefully I'll be able to get some of them out what's one short [Applause]

yes

so I think for now these will do you know the thing about snow when it's higher well I can actually grab some kindling and tinder we're in summer I'm too short now I can grab it easily so that's pretty cool and it's not [Music]

okay show those nuts on this thing yeah you know what this will do as good as a job even though it's not separated for me anyway trying to find some less naughty ones a long one hardwood yay

okay it's enough some more okay so I need a break as I said this may be a long video so time for an apple and a little chat here I just want to take I want to take a couple minutes to talk about heat reflectors now I'm not going to use any scientific terms just because I'm not smart enough but I'll try and be as plain as I can so you can understand the two true natural reflectors found in the wilderness is snow and water now I've got a nice heat reflector right here but sadly snow melts so in about an hour it won't reflect anything I'll be too far now Wood does not reflect heat did I say that out loud don't say those kinds of things well it doesn't now there's nothing wrong with building a heat reflector out of wood what people call I called more of a fence because that what that's what it looks to me a fence let me explain a few things now one thing that it could be useful for is what we call the chimney effect if you're blessed enough and have no win at all at night and you know you're about three feet three feet from your fire from the fence what it does is that when there's no wind it creates between the fire and your fence dead air space so logically it's like little vacuum the smoke will want to go right in that dead air space just like when you're making you found a nice Boulder a nice big rock and you put your your shelter in the back your lean-to and you build your fire against that Boulder well the smoke will naturally want to fall the boulder out okay now that could happen but to reflect heat it's not going to do that okay let's get rid of the fence completely let's just talk about the fire what does fire do well it heats you up right the top of the fire the heat will go in there so far I hope everyone agrees now the heat from the side where you get warmed up does not come horizontally like a perfect box to heat you up okay now I know this factors depends on the size of your fire and winds and all that but let's say naturally what it would do the heat is gonna come at an angle like this and warn you up at an angle going up because heat goes up and usually we're about three feet from the main fire so comes just about here and warms you up and if it's hot enough where there's coals it'll warm your feet and your legs but it's still going up so now imagine the fire that's at six feet from you okay so imagine the fire and the fence there's three feet between the two of them the heat goes against the fence now it's not going to reflect back heat goes up so the first thing it's going to want to do is go up in the air if there's enough heat maybe it's gonna accumulate and it's gonna push towards you but again you're six feet away as soon as it gets into the fire it's gonna go up so there's actually no secondary heat if I can say it that way coming towards you okay your main heat is the one in front of you now when we talk about that Boulder of that rock okay we know that it absorbs heat that radiates heat I mean but again it's the same problem you are about six feet away or so five or six feet away and even though it radiates heat the same problem occurs heat goes up if you want a rock to work for you you take some big rubs and you put in the fire and then when they're hot enough you bring it close to you so you can get heated up now the one thing that wood will do is capture heat when it's airtight just think of a log cabin I know if you ever went into a log cabin and the dead of winter now it doesn't have to be a log cabin it could be a wood cabin what happens when you get in it's cold right I mean it's as cold as outside all the furniture everything's cold so it takes a while to heat the place up before you're comfortable now when you light up the stove where is the heat gonna go it's gonna go up now when it hits the ceiling still wood is it going to bounce back towards you no it's not it's gonna go up it's gonna stay up there until there's no more place to go and then slowly it's gonna come down more heat you bring up the more it's going to accumulate and finally it's going to capture the heat and make you warm so if you want to do it right or have better results

never mind concentrating on offense make yourself instead a nice lead to made out of wood airtight maybe you know two little walls so when you make your fire that real heat that's coming towards you you know if you've got a big enough fire we'll go into your shelter at the top it'll do the same thing as the log cabin it's gonna stay at the top and it's gonna turn around and when you have a lot of it

well don't worry you're nice not poking me when you have a lot of it well a lot of heat you're warm in front and warm in the back as long as your fire you know is going

[Applause]

now this

Jim the effect that I spoke to you about is the same one of the same reasons why we're around a campfire and it's funny that the smoke always seems to come towards us not all the time but a lot of times right well if there's no wind your body will create that fence between you and the fire and the smoke you'll want to automatically come towards you now a second reason obviously is wind if the wind is in front of you and blows towards you obviously I'll get the smoke but if the wind is behind your back it's going to do the same effect what we call the Eddy effect the winds gonna come and twirl around and bring the fireless and the smoke towards you so to me it's all logic I don't know if you understood that maybe at me some of you mad there's nothing wrong with making it I mean it looks cool and it's extra firewood if you run out I mean it'll stay drier that way so nothing bad with that but that's the truth of the matter that's my story and I'm sticking to it and now I'm having an apple yeah

yeah

[Music]

I'm a bit lazy to prep it should work anyway we'll hope [Applause]

okay well that feels good now again as I've mentioned the million times keep your other pieces close by this helps to get any moisture out out of the wood so when it's time to put the bigger pieces you'll have a better chance but we'll be good okay can you tell me what's wrong with this now this is the coffee I drink Nescafe three in one don't need to show it you guys know what it is so check this out now this has coffee cream and sugar right

the world and I'm drinking that hmm I think I'm gonna change my habits what about you that's kind of strange for me right now but hey you got to be some kind of chemical in there so we've winter winter is back or was back we had like I don't know two three storms in a row at least and got pretty cold a couple days ago at least two-three days it got into Oh minus 20 Celsius so I said okay this snow was melting pretty well but now it's uh it's back so it's gonna take I say

at least the second week of May before any of this snow is generally gone they'll be patches here and there but up here in the mountains anyway down in the city maybe not but next week they're finally announcing some above zero and we are the end of March in the last week anyway I think we're the 22nd today or 23rd so I'm not too sure when this video is gonna be posted anyway yeah winter is back but now it's gonna go finally hallelujah I'm just making myself a little stirring stick I don't drink that's poisonous coffee [Music]

do you guys have any ideas what that is not to me I go with logic and it doesn't seem too natural so who knows you know if you're you're blessed and you have a place where you can have some kind of a campsite well they can bring you a lot of campsite comforts I can say it that way I mean it all you need is a maintance

a little bit of wood that's half prepped so you can find it in the snow any tools you build tripod folks for your pots whatever don't throw those away what do you want to come out here in the winter it took me about about an hour let's say there's a little bit of work to it but I'm very comfortable got a place to sit they got a warrant warm fire that's not sinking I got plenty of wood to last for the time I'm here for an hour of work and that fire would have had nothing well would have been a different story so if you do have a campsite and you build tools and stuff don't throw them away

let's put them aside cuz you'll need them again

gonna be a long stirring stick just getting the there okay that water is boiling so time to drink some chemicals you ready

now this one is what is it Oh French vanilla maybe it's not as poisonous

can I hold this no I can it's nice and creamy see looks good hopefully I'll survive to be able to upload this video this chemically based coffee tastes very good well the birds are seeing a nice song okay video will probably be long enough so

I don't know when I'm gonna be able to come back out hopefully it'll melt pretty quick I got a few things I have to I got at least three videos that I'd like to do but this snow has to go down now I understand that some of you can come out here as often because you're sick or or maybe too much work or whatever the reason

those of you who can and don't come back or don't come out don't get me wrong I really really appreciate you watching my videos but the real world is not in your computer it's out here so every chance you can go out

[Music]

so I'm gonna close that camera because that takes a lot of my time and the rest of the time I'm going to spend it alone here with my lord save so thanks for watching this micro bushcraft barton's enjoy the wilderness [Music]
