PLEASE READ WARNING: Rags soaked with linseed oil stored in a pile are considered a fire hazard because they provide a large surface area for oxidation of the oil, and the oil oxidises quickly. The oxidation of linseed oil is an exothermic reaction, which accelerates as the temperature of the rags increases. When heat accumulation exceeds the rate of heat dissipation into the environment, the temperature increases and may eventually become hot enough to make the rags spontaneously combust. WIKIPEDIA!

all right so I guess this is another one of those cabin fever days hopefully it'll be the last one and well I was thinking the other day of trying to find another way of protecting my axis here and I'll explain why in a minute instead of you know this this is where I used to put okay it's your typical lanyard and the problem with this if you don't wrap it lower it'll tend to you know go down on you like that so it's starting to where it was tight at the beginning it was fine but now so anyway I decided that I want to change this and something we all know about a product that's used a lot in our bushcraft type community and as I want to try it I've done already my grass roots and Brooks and I'll show you I mean the small forest axe this is a small hatchet

I don't know how come my small forest axe already so I said well why not share this with you guys maybe some of you will do the same you see the reason why just in case you're new to access why I like to put something here up mule this distance is to protect this part here this down

protect this part here from getting damaged not on all the terms and you know the parts of the X so just pointing this out to you it will help see the problem with this is especially when you're limbing a tree you start to cut off your branches and sometimes there's a lot of branches and as you cut one branch okay there at times they'll be other branches that you didn't see that are just about here as you cut the branches will come and hit on this part here and can you know damage it now because of course the grain is going this way on handle it'll split and want to you know come off like this shit this way so that's there stop that from doing it the branches hit here and don't damage the so I'll show you a little idea ahead and first I need to know the handle here's going to be in the way okay give this okay take this guy off first force this is very reusable now the wood has been you know washed the dirt off and everything it's been cleaned up but before I show you I want to take care a little bit of the handle so we all know that the best way is your linseed oil oil I mean I'm just just put a little bit linseed oil well I'd like to just put thin coats so dries nice doesn't stay all sticky something around here before any make a mistake and it'll take care of the wood first protect the water from going in let me take this off now you got to remember this is sharp so if you're playing with this be careful Wow

she was needing something she's the way you do know is that that you're would need some of drinks fast so I'm gonna need a little bit more here a lot on top here very important to get the top all right especially that the greens going like this the water will tend to go in easier all around your piece and you know you can even put some on your middle no problem I've already conditioned them in a little bit but why not brings the dark side of it in a good sense okay makes it look no bad right okay so one a little bit more here just on the end you want to get some quite a bit there too be careful him to cut yourself as you play with your ax actually I could have put the sheet back over he all right I'll be good so just to give you a little idea that's what you should do first because you're going to be putting something here after okay so put the sheet back on I'm going to wait for this to dry and what I'm done we'll be right back and I'll show you what you can do all right so she is nice and dry ready to put what you guessed it inner tube so now I've done my small four stacks and it just fit perfect this little handle is a little bit smaller so we'll see how it fits now I like to have at least somewhere around here you know about that length so I'm just gonna measure quick here so about there scissors that sounds just about right put this back here now it's always a little tough to put on it first because the handle is a little bit bigger then I mean the the butt here is always wider much wider so it'll be seeing me struggle here a little bit then of course it's not only does it protect it no--but but we all know what rubber can be great for getting fire starting fires started I mean during wet times so of course you gotta be a little patient here

pull on one side of the time this pull on the other side then once you got a grip I'm gonna pull it in come on yeah oh yes it fits perfectly on this one too cool I was worried about the that would be loose just taking this off being careful

little bit more almost there a little bit more too much okay what an awesome fit and even fits on the small hatchet so that's what should look like folks nicely protected and you know what on your longer axis you could even put another piece down here this could be a little bit slippery this I mean we know we know how I never to works it doesn't move so I might just do that with my small forest axe so now what I do after of course you don't need to do that but sometimes I'm a little bit proud you can use you can use anything you know just soap could probably work or any type of oil base product I just got this metal polish type deal and I just want to condition the rubber well condition I wanna there you go take all the white stuff so we can see all the nice black come out now I don't have the sheet on because it's in the way of the top here so again always keep in mind you got a sharp blade there my hair makes it look nice and awesome if you can see that nice and clean and will protect it it's not bulky and I'm not gonna have to be afraid you know but coming down so I think that's just an awesome idea

not that I'm awesome I'm far from being awesome just happy that this is this suits me real fine for axe protection the handles anyway and it's still even though it's a smaller handle it still you know fits nice and tight around so that you're sure no moisture can you know get in between the rubber and the wood let me show you the small forest axe and done yesterday you see because it's a longer handle here I could put a piece here that would just stop my hand completely from even moving here of course I don't want to do the whole handle I want to have to look with the wood

sound nice it fits of course you don't have the right size but you know not only does it protect it but even it has a nice cool to it cool look I mean I don't think I'm in the right light but anyway that's what it is now I made a little blog about this so if you want to have a little bit more information that's totally up to you you know about the size of the inner tube and all that stuff I'll just post a link under this this video all right so thank you for your patience you've been very patient with me this is maybe a long video for just this kind of thing and well hopefully this cabin fever is over all right you guys take care this is Mike from lush red bars bye you
